A Text Reflection

THANK YOU!!! We want to thank our parishioner at Sacred Heart who gave a gift in memory of her parents, Irene and Fred Daborowski. We used her donation to purchase new ciboria and lids for Sacred Heart. Ciboria are the bowls used to hold the consecrated hosts for Mass when giving out communion. Thank you so much for your generous gift to the parish.

4th Sunday in Ordinary Time

"The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes." Jesus was doing something different. His teaching was new, fresh, surprising. The Jewish people were used to the teaching style of their scribes, the scholars who interpreted the Scriptures and taught the corresponding laws. The scribes were legalists by trade, who focused on what was required of the Jews based on the holy writings. For them, the law was dominant. But when Jesus showed up in the synagogue and began to teach, he was dominant. As the incarnate Son of God, he spoke with an authority

that was greater even than the religious laws.

And just in case those who heard him doubted his legitimacy, Jesus proved his authority by more than words; he cast out evil spirits. When the people witnessed Jesus commanding "even the unclean spirits" and saw that these spirits obeyed him, they were

"amazed" at this "new teaching with authority."

What our Jewish ancestors experienced is recorded for us to bolster our own faith. Although we were not there to see these events unfold, if we meditate on the reality of today's Gospel story we will also be astonished and amazed. Jesus is more than a teacher. He is more than a kind man with an attractive philosophy. Jesus has power over the spiritual world! His authority over us is real. And he exercises this authentic authority for our own good. He has the power to do away with evil and to set us free, both through his teachings--passed on to us in the Bible and in the Church--and through his action in our lives. We

only need to follow his lead.

The Bible Made Me Do It

Tim Staples was raised Baptist and served as an Assembly of God Youth Minister. He used his extensive biblical knowledge to at-tack the Catholic Church but when he was chal-lenged on his beliefs, a two-year search for truth led him right to Catholicism. Now he uses that same incredible gift to defend the Faith and help others to embrace the beauty and

richness of Catholicism.

The next YOUTH gathering will be February 8th from 6:30 – 7:45pm,. There will not be a gathering on February 1st.

Weekly Update by Tim Winkeler: 32 men attended That Man Is You! on January 24th. We reviewed a summary of last season’s lessons about leadership and discussed how we have put them into action in our own lives. Even if you’ve never attended, join us Saturday, January 31st at 6:45AM at Sacred Heart in Yarmouth for our next session, entitled THE BATTLE OVER FATHERHOOD.

MAKING MUSIC/PRAYING TWICE: Making Music Praying Twice provides that path by bringing children (Ages birth to 5) and parents together on the wings of music. Our program of music and movement designed to foster the Catholic faith and to enrich education and family

life, pursues a profound goal:

In a secular world often devoid of faith and of family togetherness, Making Music Praying Twice provides a genuine faith-based experience that is rare, enriching,

educational, transcendental and beautiful.

We meet Wednesdays in the green room at Holy Martyrs Church in Falmouth from 10:15am-11:15am. Look on our website (www.pothe.org) or contact Jennifer Runge at: [email protected] for

more information.

If you are thinking of becoming Catholic or of completing your Catholic

initiation??

Please contact Georgette Dionne at 553-9076 or at [email protected]

RCIA (Rite of Christian initiation for Adults) is the

process which facilitates learning, questioning, discerning, and freely choosing to become Catholic. For Candidates (those who have been baptized in another Christian Church) or catechumens (those who have not

been baptized and who are completely new to the Catholic faith), RCIA is an enriching journey alongside supportive sponsors and guides, with no pressures of

time limits or deadlines. Each individual is free to grow into a fully initiated member of our faith, at her/his own

pace. Respect is given to varying circumstances, motivations, and intentions.

2 Sacrament of Confirmation Guidelines:

1. Could I be a Confirmation Sponsor?

Important requirements for being a Confirmation sponsor:

I am least 16 years of age.

I am a fully initiated Catholic and have received the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist.

I participate in the Mass on Sundays and am in good standing with my Church.

I actively strive to live out my commitment to Christ and to the community life of the Church. I will support this candidate with my prayers, love, and by the Christian example of my daily life.

If married, I have been validly married according to the laws of the Catholic Church.

I am neither the father nor mother of the candidate

I can be the godfather or godmother of this candidate

2.Choosing a Confirmation Name

There are two main practices:

A candidate may use her/his baptismal name (John, Elizabeth, etc.). In this way the close connection between Baptism and Confirmation is highlighted.

A candidate may select a new name. A good approach is to choose the name of a saint or holy person whose life inspires you to live faithfully.

Your choice!!

Deepening our Faith

History of St. Jude

Church in Freeport

History records show that the first Mass was said in Freeport in 1916; however, it wasn’t until 1928 that land was purchased by Sacred Heart’s pastor, Father Joseph Quinn, for a mission church in this community. In 1933 a small metal building located in what is now the church parking lot on

School Street, was dedicated as St. Joseph’s Church.

Part Two: The Road towards becoming a Parish: Fund raising began during the 1940’s for a more permanent structure to be built on the land temporarily leased to a gas station. In the 1950’s the gas station exploded. The church took back its lease and continued fund raising while still using the metal building as a church. In the 1960’s a heating stove in the metal building malfunctioned, leaving the interior covered with soot.

The building, now unfit for use, was sold and moved.

Part Three: Renovations: Owning land but no building, the community continued to worship in the nearby Nordica Movie Theater, where smells of popcorn lingered from the night before and the ticket booth

doubled as the confessional.

Slow moving fund raising efforts were given a boost with a significant donation given anonymously on the condition that the church would be renamed for St. Jude. Construction began in 1964 and the completed church was dedicated on Easter Sunday of 1966. Over the next 30 years the parish hall was finished and the

main church renovated.

In 2011, St. Jude Church joined Parish of the Holy Eucharist. Today St. Jude is an active church with active and committed parishioners in the midst of Freeport’s thriving shopping district, working in partnership with Sacred Heart, Holy Martyrs, and St. Gregory as the Parish of the Holy Eucharist to proclaim and celebrate

our faith.

History of St. Gregory

Church in Gray

In 1926, Fr. James E. Carey of Sacred Heart Parish in Portland founded Catholic children’s camps throughout the area including St.

Gregory’s for boys on Crystal Lake in Gray. Under the direction of the chaplain at St. Gregory’s, Mass was celebrated in the recreation hall for the campers and local people who wished to attend during the summer

months.

Part Two: The Road Towards becoming a Parish: As summer visitors increased, there was a drive in 1958 to build a chapel on the grounds. Father Knox was the campground chaplain at the time. The Catholic Holy Name Society of Portland and many other interested groups and individuals helped to make the drive a success. The chapel was built and named in honor of St. Gregory the Great. It was formally dedicated and blessed on August 2, 1959, and then became a Mission of

Sacred Heart of Yarmouth.

Part Three: Renovations: With the increased number of families in the area, the people desired a church that would be open all year. With the encouragement of the Most Reverent Daniel J. Feeney, the summer chapel was winterized in the fall of 1964.

On April 15, 1967, St. Gregory’s was established as a parish with its own resident Pastor. Rev. James Knox who served the families of Gray, New Gloucester and West Cumberland. There were 200 registered Catholic families at that time. They had no rectory then and Father Knox lived in a campground cabin for part of the winter with no plumbing and only a fireplace for heat. The campground had, at one time, 448 campers (boys) and 39 staff members. The rectory was built in 1968 by a Lewiston contractor but mostly by parishioners. The

parish hall was completed in 1970.

In 2011, St. Gregory Church joined the Parish of the Holy Eucharist. In 2014, new pews were installed with the help of so many parishioners! Today St. Gregory is an active church with dedicated parishioners who are working in partnership with Holy Martyrs, St. Jude and Sacred Heart as the Parish of the Holy Eucharist to

proclaim and celebrate our faith.

A Request from the Good Cause Thrift Shop: The Good Cause Thrift Shop's inventory of towels, sheets, blankets and other linens is currently very low. If you have any of these items you are not using and/or can spare, it would be greatly appreciated.

Please feel free to drop off any items directly at the Shop, located at 16 Forest Avenue in Portland.

The mission of the Good Cause Thrift Shop is to provide quality items at affordable prices to those we serve. All proceeds benefit the tuition assistance program at Catherine McAuley High School.

Donation of Winter Clothing - We thank the

parishioners and visitors who have been donating winter clothing at our churches. The contributions have been very useful to the organizations which distribute jackets, sweaters, boots and other items to the homeless and needy in our towns as well as in Portland. We ask you to be aware of a few helpful things.

Please place your donations in plastic bags or large paper shopping bags. It is difficult to make several transfers of donated clothing if they are not bundled and packaged.

Also, please keep in mind that many volunteers handling these bags of donations are older people and very heavy bags are difficult for them to handle. A 30-gallon plastic bag filled with boots and clothing weighs a lot.

Bear in mind that the clothes should be in good condition -- “lightly worn.” Our Parish volunteers will separate donations for different programs:

St. Vincent de Paul soup kitchen at the Cathedral where heavy work clothes for young men are especially useful and the Preble Street Teen Center which assists a younger group;

Catholic Charities (immigrant/refugee office) which provides cold weather clothing to new arrivals, the Good Cause and Threads of Hope stores which will get clothing with resale potential; our local food pantries which alert us to special needs.

We need to focus on clothing at this time and recommend that you give your kitchen and household items to other programs.

The Parish has recently learned about

an individual undergoing

chemotherapy and receiving

treatment once a week. This case

would involve a drive from New

Gloucester to Scarborough and return. Treatment will

continue for six months. The Commission of Social

Justice and Peace is also aware that other individuals in

our different towns may have a similar need. These are

cases in which finances are limited and/or family

members are not available to help. The question to

explore -- would there be people in our Parish who could

offer help? Would you have time to transport someone

to receive treatment? Please contact the Parish office

and someone from the Commission will follow up and

provide additional details for your consideration.: 847-
