The government in its recentbudget announced several de-velopment plans for the IndianRailways, including setting upof large solar power capacityand introduction of high-speedtrains. The company sees an op-portunity here. “We have alrea-dy been engaged with the IndianRailways and we will continue tolook for any opportunity in that.For the upcoming FY 2021, we arefocusing on meeting the demandsfor the infrastructure and const-ruction segments. We are also lo-oking to improve our penetrationin solar,” Acharya said.

Mumbai: JSW Steel is closelywatching all the upcomingiron ore mine auctions, as thecompany is in the final stagesto acquire land in Odisha for aproposed greenfield project, atop executive said.

“We remain interested in theupcoming iron ore mining auc-tions because we would like tohave a backward linkage,” di-rector (commercial, marketing& corporate strategy) JayantAcharya told ET. The companyhas acquired part of the landidentified in Odisha and is inthe process of closing the rema-ining deals, he said. “At an app-ropriate time, we will take it(the project) forward.”

In January, a news agency re-port had said the Utkal SteelProject at Jagatsinghpur inParadeep would cost `̀53,700crore. Reports earlier had saidJSW had not yet received the2,980 acres it was seeking forthe integrated steel plant.

Mumbai: The Department of Telecom-munications (DoT) has approved themerger of Tata Teleservices’ consumermobility business with Bharti Airtel, pa-ving the way for the closure of the sec-tor’s last major M&A deal more than twoyears after it was announced.

The DoT “has conveyed approval of thecompetent authority in DoT for taking onrecord demerger of consumer mobile bu-siness undertaking of the company intoBharti Airtel in terms of the compositescheme of arrangement between thecompany and Bharti Airtel which wasapproved by the respective shareholdersand creditors and by ...National Compa-ny Law Tribunal benches at Delhi andMumbai vide their orders dated January30, 2019 and December 4, 2018, respective-ly,” said Tata Teleservices in a regulatoryfiling on Thursday.

The DoT’s nod came in after the Supre-me Court (SC) refused to grant stay to aninterim order of Telecom Disputes Sett-lement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT),which had directed the government toclear the deal.

The DoT had moved the Supreme Co-urt against the TDSAT, which stayedthe government’s demand for about`̀8,000 crore in bank guarantees for one-time spectrum charges (OTSC), and as-ked the government to take the mergeron record. After the TDSAT order, Air-tel and the Tatas had gone ahead andmerged the operations, and filed in theRegistrar of Companies, which took thedeal on record.

The DoT then moved the SC, challeng-ing the appellate’s order. The apex court,however, refused to put a hold on the mer-ger and directed the government to giveits nod to the alliance.

New Delhi: The Depart-ment of Pharmaceuticals(DoP) has asked industrylobbies and associations tomake sure that pharma com-panies adhere to marketingnorms during their confe-rences, a directive that co-mes amid a clear failure onthe part of the companies toregulate themselves.

In a letter dated February 4,the DoP said it had receivedcomplaints that pharmacompanies “arrange hotels,accommodations, localsightseeing” in conferencesconducted by doctors.

Asking the lobbies to ensurethat no unethical promotionof pharma products is doneduring conferences, it saidcompanies must adhere tothe Universal Code of Phar-maceutical Marketing Prac-tices (UCPMP) during the up-coming annual conferencesof Indian Psychiatric Society,which are to be held in Kolka-ta and Visakhapatnam.

The UCPMP is being volun-tarily adopted by pharmace-utical companies since 2015.However, concerns overpharmaceutical companiesoffering gifts to influencemedical professionals haveerupted from time to time.

Bengaluru: In a move thatcould revive participation inwind bidding in a big way, theministry of new and rene-wable energy (MNRE) plansto stop imposing ceiling ta-riffs on wind tenders, indust-ry insiders told ET.

Recent wind and solar auc-tions conducted by the SolarEnergy Corporation of India(SECI), an arm of MNRE, ha-ve all set ‘ceiling tariffs’ abovewhich bids are not accepted.

Removal of the ceiling tariffhas been a long standing de-mand of the industry. Develo-pers maintain that tariffs aretoo low and it restricts themfrom participating as well asstymies the progress of rene-wable energy.

"This will definitely encou-rage participation. The cei-ling tariffs in tenders have be-en unviable so far, they will atleast become viable," a lea-ding developer said, reques-ting anonymity.

Wind tenders issued by cen-tral agencies have been metwith lukewarm participationover the past year. Only aro-und 1.8GW was added betwe-en April and December lastyear, according to data collec-ted by the Indian Wind Turbi-ne Manufacturers Associa-tion (IWTMA). In 2018, 2.3GWwas added.

"There is a plan to stop set-ting ceiling tariffs startingfrom SECI's 10th tranche ofwind auctions," said a sourceclose to the development.

MNRE secretary AnandKumar could not be reachedfor a comment. It is notknown whether ceiling ta-riffs will be removed for so-lar tenders as well althoughsources say it is likely.

SECI's most recent windtender (tranche 9) has beenpostponed five times becau-se of tepid participation.The ceiling tariff for it was`̀2.93 per unit.

Accor-ding to data from the WorldHealth Organisation (WHO),there were a total of 813 deathsfrom 8,437 cases. However, thiswas over a 7-month periodfrom November 2002 to July2003. coronavirus deaths havetouched nearly 500 in less thanthe month-and-a-half sincethe virus was first reported.

This year, interest hasfurther reduced by 20-30%, alt-hough it is still early to say de-cisively as students fill theirapplications in April.

"With the current outbreak,there will certainly be somehesitation in applying to Chi-nese universities," said Sume-et Jain, co-founder, Yocket.

New Delhi: The spread of thecoronavirus infection will im-pact Indian students in China,as well as Indians opting to goto the country, according toeducation consultants.

Experts estimate that thereare around 20,000-25,000 Indi-an students in China, with 80-90% of them studying medici-ne. China is a popular studydestination for medical stu-dents due to lower fees and bet-ter infrastructure comparedto private medical colleges inIndia. Some Indian studentshad returned to India duringthe winter break. A few morereturned after the outbreak ofthe virus, and they are not su-re of when they can go back.

While students are still opti-mistic that things will be res-tored to normalcy soon, ex-perts are not so sure. “We can-not predict when the viruswill be brought under cont-rol. There are no signs thatwe are going to get rid of thisquickly,” said Rajiv Singh,co-founder, CollegeDekho.

For instance, one circular is-sued by the international stu-dents’ office of Tongji Universi-ty, which was shared with ETby a student, says that ‘none ofthe students are allowed to re-turn to campus earlier than theyet-to-be-announced beginningdate of the spring semester’.

Kolkata: International pri-ces of iron ore and base metalshave tumbled due to the novelcoronavirus outbreak in Chi-na, a major consumer andsupplier of base metals and alarge importer of iron ore, glo-bal ratings agency Moody’s In-vestor Service has said.

China’s weightage in the ba-se metals and iron ore indust-ry has led to market senti-ments turning negative in theaftermath of the virus outbre-

ak, Moody’s notedin its latest sectorcomment on me-tals and mining.

“Prices have re-sponded more quickly and mea-ningfully to the downside com-pared with the SARS outbreakin 2002/2003,” it said. “Chinesesupply-demand factors and ex-pectations regarding economicgrowth in that county are nowmuch stronger influences onthe metals sector today.”

All 645 Evacuees FromWuhan Test Negative

New Delhi: All 645 peopleevacuated from China's Wu-han city, who were lodged atthe quarantine facilities setup by the Army and Indo Ti-betan Border Police (ITBP)in and around Delhi, havetested negative for coronavi-rus, the union health mini-stry said on Thursday.

It said that as on February61,38,750 passengers from1,265 flights had been screenedfor the nCoV illness but nonew case has been detected.

India has so far reportedthree confirmed cases ofnCoV from Kerala. Threemedical students studying atthe Wuhan University, all na-tives of Kerala, who retur-ned to India on their own re-

cently and self-reported at ahospital in the state, have tes-ted positive for the respirato-ry virus.

“All 645 evacuees from Wu-han, China have tested nega-tive for novel coronavirus,”the ministry said. A total of1,202 samples have been tes-ted as of Thursday which in-cludes the samples of 645 pe-ople lodged at the quarantinecentres set up by the Army inHaryana's Manesar and theITBP in Chawla camp.

“All the 645 people have tes-ted negative. Samples of allthese individuals will be re-tested on day 14 of the quaran-tine period,” it said.

Community surveillanceand contact tracing is beingcarried out by IDSP for 6,558persons across 32 states/UTs.
