THE ANNALS OF JAZZ WITH RICHARD HADLOCKSundayS at 7 pm

The sound of surprise describes both jazz itself and the enduring premise of "The Annals of Jazz." Since 1959, host Richard Hadlock has been improvising on historical themes and bringing forth worthy performers—from Armstrong to Zorn. Each Sunday, we may find Annals in Europe, Asia, Latin America or Back of Town anywhere.

Frankie Manning became fascinated with dance as a child while attending Harlem rent parties with his mother. This early fascination led him to The Savoy Ballroom as a teenager, and on to become what some say ‘the greatest lindy hopper of them all.’ Vernel Bageris joins The Jim Cullum Jazz Band to explore the legacy of Frankie Manning ‘Ambassador of Lindy Hop.’

The Jim Cullum Jazz Band and their guests perform love songs from the pantheon of early 20th century black songwriters, including Eubie Blake, Waller & Razaf, Duke Ellington, Don Redman and Benny Carter.

2/1 Sketches of Gil Evans. Wynton Marsalis, Host.

2/8 Soul Jazz Summit

2/15 Kurt Elling and Richard Galliano

2/22 Duke Ellington’s Degas Suite Wynton Marsalis, Host.

The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra honors the godfather of “cool”—the incomparable arranger and composer Gil Evans (pictured.) His large ensemble work—especially with Miles Davis –opened ears to a softer way of big band arranging. This concert features some of his collaborations with Davis and Evans’ own compositions.

Vocalist Kurt Elling (pictured) and French accordionist Richard Galliano transport us from the Allen Room to the cafes of Paris and the beaches of Buenos Aires. Don’t miss this heartfelt collaboration exploring the art of the ballad.

Carmen McRae was an outstanding song stylist whose great strength was in her phrasing and interpretation of lyrics. She was also an excellent pianist, whose personal approach and musicianship developed during her occasional performances at Minton's Playhouse during the early years of bebop.

To mark the anniversary of his birth (Dec. 12), we'll focus on the life and legacy of Francis Albert Sinatra (1915 - 1988) -- one of the great vocalists of the American century. The program will trace his roots in Hoboken, NJ and his early discovery by bandleader Harry James, to his breakthrough appeal to the "bobby soxers" as the vocalist with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra in the 1940, to his second "golden era" with Capitol Records in the 1950s, where his recordings with Nelson Riddle and Billy May have achieved legendary status.

2/16 Latin Romance with guest host Murray Horwitz

2/23 Shirley Horn

Chris (pictured, left) on bass and Dan (pictured, right) on drums carry forward their father Dave's joyful, swinging odd meters, and the brothers add some funk. With Mike DeMicco on guitar and Chuck Lamb on piano.

Pianist/composer/arranger Billy Childs (pictured) carves out new spaces on the jazz landscape and blends elements of classical music with jazz to create what he calls "chamber jazz." His 2005 album Lyric won two Grammy Awards. On this session from 2006, Childs performs his composition Into The Light and his Grammy-nominated arrangement of Scarborough Fair.

Pianist and singer Shirley Horn (pictured) was known for her masterful ability to accompany her vocals. Her first interest was classical music, but fortunately for the jazz world, Miles Davis gave her some rare high praise in 1960, and the rest is history. On this session from 1990, Horn plays and sings But Beautiful and For All We Know and joins host McPartland for a piano duet on Isn't It Romantic?

We're picking and choosing groups from more than two years of live WBGO/NPR webcasts from the best-known jazz club on Earth. Artists TBA.
