February 2015
Lent is that 40 day period that begins on Ash Wednesday, February 18, and ends on Holy Saturday, April 4 (not counAng Sundays). It is a season set aside for re-‐orienAng and re-‐focusing our lives on following Jesus, on doing what Jesus did.
This year our Lenten worship, study, service, and giving will focus on hunger, feeding the hungry, and caring for the poor. Here is a quick overview of how you can make solidarity with the poor and hungry part of your own personal Lenten journey this season.
✤ Women: AOend our “Mardi Bras” event on Tuesday, February 17. This event liPs up the unique challenges faced by homeless women in taking care of their hygiene needs.
✤ Everyone: Join us for our Lenten Suppers featuring simple ordinary meals similar to those eaten by our sisters and brothers in PalesAne, Tanzania, Colombia, and HaiA.
✤ Families: Pick up a “Living Simply with God Hunger Calendar” and a “Feed the World” coin box. The calendar has an easy acAvity for each day of Lent with suggesAons how to fill up the coin box. When it’s full, bring it to church and we’ll send your coins to ELCA World Hunger.
✤ Youth/Families/Anyone: Organize a team to parAcipate in the Kids Against Hunger event at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, North Liberty, on Saturday, March 28, from 8:00am to 4:00pm.
✤ Anyone: If you are looking to go deeper in your Lenten spiritual discipline and seriously stretch yourself, take up Chris Seay’s challenge in A Place at the Table: 40 Days of Solidarity with the Poor. He invites us to “eat like the poor for 40 days and donate the money you save on groceries to a charity or project that serves the poor in concrete ways.” There are many different ways to do this. You could choose the diet of a child you sponsor somewhere in the world or of a place where friends serve as missionaries. You could try to live on what a person gets from food stamps. You could decide to eat simply, “fasAng” from processed foods, or restaurant meals, or whatever will work with your health and lifestyle needs. The whole point is to “make your fast count for the less fortunate” by giving what you save during your fast to the poor.
This is not a go-‐it-‐alone spiritual discipline. A Place at the Table includes a six video sessions shot in lo-‐caAons like the Holy Land, Ecuador, and HaiA which we will feature during the Adult Learning Hour on Sunday mornings, and a companion book of 40 short chapters with Scripture, reflecAons, prayers, and encouragement. Vicar Aleese and I will co-‐lead a small group on Wednesday evenings aPer worship to provide support for this journey.
Join us for a Lenten journey marked by personal acAon in solidarity with the poor and hungry.
BlessingsPastor Ritva

Thank you to the 65 persons who gathered on Sunday, January 25, at 9:15am. We completed all necessary elecIons (see results below). While the ballots were being counted, we viewed a slide presentaAon of 2014 — the year in review. Jonathan Chambers, ExecuAve Direc-‐tor of Family Promise, officially thanked us for being part of the Family Promise network of congregaAons that provides shelter and food for homeless families. Gail Husmann shared the success of our first Stephen Ministry training class: four Stephen Ministers who are acAvely engaged in walking alongside persons in the congregaAon who are experiencing some diffi-‐cult Ames. We received the financial, audit, and endowment reports. We approved a 2015 min-‐istry plan and budget totaling $251,666. The funds are to be allocated as follows:
Knowing Christ – Worship $114,269 (45.4%)(everything associated with worship and music)
Knowing Christ – Learning $ 28,421 (11.3%)(includes a part-‐Ame Youth Director
to begin in September)Living Christ Ministries $ 53,201 (21.1%)(includes Stephen Ministry, hospitality, stewardship, etc.)Sharing Christ Ministries $ 55,775 (22.2%)
(includes internship costs, ELCA mission support, Family Promise, etc.)
Vice President Tim Sagers updated us on the state of our building and property. The exterior of the building needs significant repairs ($6,500), and the bathroom in “Red House” has to be re-‐done completely ($4,000), for a total cost of $10,500. At the Ame of his presentaAon he had received pledges totaling $2,000 toward these repairs. By the end of Sunday the total pledged for these projects had climbed to $5,500!

I have always looked forward to the season of Lent. It seems counterintuiAve; in the season in which we remember the journey of Christ to the cross, it wouldn’t seem to be a season to look for-‐ward to. Yet, in the midst of this,
I find myself remembering anew how God is at work in the world and in my life. Engaging in the journey of Lent, I am renewed and transformed as I parAcipate in the age-‐old spiritual pracAces of the church: fasAng, prayer, and giving.
This Lenten season we are being invited to partici-‐pate together in experiencing hunger. In inten-‐Aonal learning, giving, prayer, and yes – perhaps even fasAng, we are invited to experience hun-‐ger with our whole bodies. As I conAnue to work at St. Luke’s, I am conAnually reminded of how the physical health of an individual also affects his/her emoAonal, spiritual, and social well-‐being. In assessing and evaluaAng the paAents and families that I work with, it is impossible to focus on one single aspect of a person’s life. Our bodies are not individual parts but are created as
a whole system. We are not a collecAon of things put together but are wired to experience God and others with our whole bodies. Paul writes in Romans 12:1: “I appeal to you therefore, broth-‐ers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and accept-‐able to God, which is your spiritual worship.” What we do with our lives and our bodies is our act of spiritual worship to God. Contrary to a compartmentalized understanding of our lives, we are invited to reintegrate our lives together, living fully as people of God and experiencing anew what God can do with our whole lives.
As we look toward Lent, I encourage you to con-‐sider your openness to experiencing God anew through your whole body. What experiences is the Spirit leading you to? Where could the Spirit be leading us as a congregaAon? Wherever we are led, I pray that the Spirit conAnues to trans-‐form our lives as we consider ourselves as whole beings in the kingdom of God.
Peace,Vicar Aleese Baldwin
Lay Internship Committee Wants Your FeedbackOur Lay Internship CommiOee – Derek Buckaloo, Dan Husmann, Leslie Hyland, Makenzie Kuhn, Kevin Ostmo, Mary Tank, and Carole Butz (Chair) – meets each month to support Vicar Aleese through her Internship year at St. Stephen's. Body Talk
Our 12 confirmaAon students have been learning about the Faiths of Our Neighbors. We began our study of what “religion” means, lead-‐ing us into a study of the Abrahamic TradiAons. We are now in the midst of studying Judaism, ChrisAanity, and Islam, and will also be learning about Buddhism and other ChrisAan denomina-‐
Aons. This past January we were able to visit Temple Judah, and in February we will be visiAng the Mother Mosque and the Buddhist Zen Cen-‐ter. Parents are always welcome to join us on our trips! Ask our confirmands what they are learning about as a part of their faith journey!

Youth Gathering Update: On the Road to DetroitAs I write this article, I am preparing for a gather-‐ing of youth leaders in Detroit. I am excited to gather with other leaders as we think about our preparation for the Gathering and how to make the most of our trip! I also hope to get a first-‐hand view of the city and the different sites we will be at in July. Stay tuned for an update when I return!
In January, we began selling Hy-‐Vee coupon books. As of late January, we have 47 coupon books remaining. If you are interested in a cou-‐pon book, please see one of the youth. Books are $10 each. Eight dollars are returned directly to the youth, and you have the opportunity to get your $10 back when you spend $100 at Hy-‐Vee. We have also accrued more stock in our company. Assuming that all 200 of our Hy-‐Vee coupon books will be sold, we will have raised $9,713.86 to date. Only $2,286.14 lec!
As we bridge into February, we are offering two fundraisers. Please see the announcement below regarding an opportunity for ValenIne’s Day childcare. Also, keep your eyes (and noses!) peeled for a bake sale in early March. Both large desserts and individual-‐sized porAons will be aucAoned via a silent aucAon.
On Sunday, February 1, two of our youth will present informaAon with DeeAnn Hebrink about the Gathering during the Adult EducaIon Hour. Come join us as we learn more about what the Gathering is all about and why our kids are so excited to go!
The youth and adult leaders have also begun their monthly preparatory meeAngs. In January we were able to get to know each other beOer and began looking at the lens in which we see Jesus and the lens in which we see ourselves as disciples of Christ. We encourage the congrega-‐Aon to ask the youth about what they took away from the study and how this is influencing how they prepare for Detroit. We will meet again on Sunday, February 8, at 11:45am to conAnue our conversaAon. Parents are encouraged to aOend for the first 15 minutes for announcements and fundraiser details.
Last month we noted that we are coordinaAng with other churches to travel to the gathering. Because one congregaAon was not able to send as many youth as originally planned, we have added three more congregaIons to the bus: Wayne-‐Zion (MonAcello) St. Paul’s (Anamosa) and St. MaOhew’s (MonAcello). These churches were already teamed up but now have joined us in a bigger team! Our bus is now completely full!
Our youth and leaders are very busy! If you have any quesAons about upcoming fundraisers or the preparaAon of our youth, please contact Vicar Aleese (email: [email protected]; cell: 319-‐427-‐0600) or DeeAnn Hebrink (email: [email protected]; cell: 319-‐361-‐9776). Let’s get ready to RISE UP as a church together!
National Youth Gathering FundraisersOur high school youth are selling $10 Hy-‐Vee coupon books for the NaAonal Youth Gathering. At this Ame, we have 47 books remaining. Talk to a youth if you’d like a book! Youth receive $8 for each book sold. The youth will offer childcare to parents of young children over ValenIne's Day weekend – Friday evening, Saturday lunchAme, and Saturday evening. Childcare will be provided in the family’s home! If you are interested, please contact DeeAnn as soon as possible at [email protected] or 364-‐3093.There will be a bake sale in early March. Both large desserts and individual-‐sized portions will be auctioned via a silent auction.

National Parent Leadership MonthFebruary is NaAonal Parent Leadership Month. Through your support, LSI is able to partner with thousands of parents each year who want to be parent leaders and make posiAve changes in their families. Some parents come to us through our early childhood services and want a liOle extra support in raising an infant or toddler. Other parents turn to our therapy services, be-‐havioral health intervenAon services, or our many community programs for help. Others be-‐come part of our programs through involvement with the Department of Human Services. Your support of LSI as your social ministry helps pre-‐vent child abuse and neglect and helps strengthen families all across the state. LSI is proud to be an affiliated social ministry or-‐ganiza>on of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Learn more at www.LSIowa.org and www.facebook.com/LSI.iowa.
“I want to give my daughter the opportuniXes I never had.”Emma is only two years old, but she already knows something as important as the ABCs: learning can be fun!Amanda and Mike, Emma’s parents, are giving their liOle girl the tools for lifelong success, and they’re partnering with LSI to do it. The Water-‐loo couple found out about LSI while Amanda was pregnant.
“It was my first child, and I was nervous,” said Amanda. The family joined LSI’s HOPES (Healthy Opportu-‐niAes for Parents to Experience Success), a vol-‐untary program for parents of young children. Andrea, an LSI family support worker, visits the family at home, bringing along a wealth of in-‐formaAon, Aps, and resources for Emma’s healthy growth and development.“Andrea brought me a lot of informa>on on what to expect and what I could prepare for before Emma was born,” Amanda said. “Emma loves Andrea.”Amanda’s parents are great at finding learning opportuniAes for Emma in everyday life, from counAng stairs to idenAfying colors. “Amanda and Mike are so goal-‐oriented,” said Andrea. “Every goal they have made they have achieved. It’s become second nature to them to make every opportunity a learning opportunity. They are very suppor>ve of each other and really want the best for their child.”Amanda recommends LSI to other parents who want their children to get a great start in life, too. “It’s a great program if you are a first-‐>me parent,” she said. “It’s very informa>ve.”
Let’s start a St. Stephen’s quilIng group in part-‐nership with Lutheran Services in Iowa (LSI).
Don’t sew? No problem! We have opportuniAes for people to iron/mark fabric, cut squares, etc.IniAal items needed for start up:
• All sorts of fabric (baby quilts should be made with new fabric).
• Thread, scissors, thread rippers, quilAng needles, yarn to Ae, and small waste baskets to keep the work area clean.
Right now I have enough material to get started. We can use my house for marking and cuyng; eventually we’ll move operaAons to the church. Please contact me for the more detailed plan for this new social ministry. Let’s get started!
