Faith over Fear: Choosing Unity over Extremism – An Interfaith Service and Dinner of Dialogue

Religious leaders and scholars Bruce Feiler, Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde, Imam Johari Abdul-Malik, and Imam Mohamed Magid will join us at Temple on Friday, May 20 to share their thoughts on “Faith over Fear: Choosing Unity over Extremism,” and the value of taking part in interfaith dialogue in our present day. Starting with an interfaith service at 6:00 pm and con-tinuing in a Dinner of Dialogue, our panel of interfaith scholars will look at recent world events and how they can inform what we do as a community to confront religious extremism and build greater understanding and harmony.

During the Dinner of Dialogue, we will have the opportunity to engage

in table talk about current events with members of the National Cathedral and several local mosques. It is a critical time for everyone in our Congregation to engage in this interfaith conversa-tion. This program was borne as a con-clusion to our Congregational Conver-sation, but our discussion and dialogue are open to all who are concerned with the ongoing bigotry and xenophobia in our world, and, especially, with the political discourse of our day.

The interfaith service is free and open to the public, but reservations are required for the Dinner of Dialogue. Tickets are $18. Please register online: whctemple.org/ CongregationalConversations.

About Our Panel:Imam Abdul-Malik is the Outreach

Coordinator at the Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center and former Muslim Chaplain at Howard University. He serves as the Chair of Government Relations for the Muslim Alliance in North America and is President of the Muslim Society of Washington.

Bishop Budde is the ninth Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington and the first woman elected to serve in this role. She is also the Interim Dean of Washington National Cathedral.

Camp Moss Hollow – A Life Changing ExperienceOver the past 14 years, WHC congregants have made it possible for more than 500 kids from Abram Simon Elementary School go to Camp Moss Hollow in the summer. A small group of Temple volunteers recruits the campers, gathers their paperwork, buys supplies, arranges physicals, and coordinates transportation. We even follow-up after camp to see how the kids are doing.

This is more than just some time away. Many of these children have never left the District and most have never been away from home. Camp is such a compelling experi-ence that many kids return year after year until they age out — and then they come back as camp staff or counselors. The cost to send a child to Moss Hollow is $400, and our goal is to raise $20,000 to enable 50 kids to go to camp this summer.

You can help! We invite you to make a secure online do-nation on our website, whctemple.org/Donate. Please select “Abram Simon Elementary School Camp Fund” from the drop-down menu of funds. For more information about the Congregation’s involvement with the Simon School and the Camp Moss Hollow project, please contact Elissa Oshinsky, 301-229-3479 or [email protected].
