Swimming pool water can be a breeding ground for many microorganisms. When microorganisms such as bacteria, fungus and algae thrive, pool water will begin to appear uninviting. More importantly, users of the water may become ill. We control and eliminate the growth of these types of microorganisms by adding a disinfectant to the pool water. Disinfectants in the Caribbean Blue line that accomplish this are referred to as Sanitizers.

All of the Caribbean Blue Sanitizing products, with the exception of Brominating Tabs, are forms of Stabilized Chlorine. Stabilized Chlorine is a type of chlorine that has been “pre-bonded” with a stabilizer (cyanuric

acid) to prevent the chlorine from depleting rapidly in the presence of ultra-violet (UV) light. Stabilized Chlorine is ideal for residential pools because it is convenient to use and long lasting. Although these types of chlorines are stabilized, in order to prevent any unnecessary chlorine loss it is recommended to increase cyanuric acid levels for freshly filled pools or pools with low cyanuric acid levels using Caribbean Blue Sunblock. Levels of stabilizer in residential chlorine pools, using Sunblock, should be maintained between 30-100 ppm. In certain states or counties, levels at commercial properties may need to be maintained at more precise levels.

1" brominating tablets for continued sanitizer introduction to water. Contains BCDMH.

When a chlorine sanitizer enters the water it forms hypochlorous acid (HOCl), typically referred to as free available chlorine (FAC). This particular acid will kill or inactivate microorganisms in water. It is important to note that pH determines how active HOCl is in the pool water. The higher the pH the less active HOCl is. Conversely, the lower the pH the more active HOCl will be (see chart).

It would seem logical to keep pH low to keep HOCl active in the water. However, a consistently low pH will be harmful to the pool and the equipment! Additionally, low pH makes for uncomfortable swimming or bathing conditions. The ideal pH range in pools and spas is 7.2-7.6. Within this range HOCl peaks while maintaining a desirable pH.

Caribbean Blue Forever Clear Tabs are partially blended with a unique formula which allows chlorine to more efficiently kill and inactivate microorganisms in pool water.

When bromine is used as a sanitizer, it too forms an acid when it enters the water. This particular acid is called hypobromous acid (HOBr). Compared to HOCl, active HOBr is not as greatly impacted when pH levels are elevated. For this reason, bromine is a better sanitizer when pH in water rises constantly. Rising pH occurs often in hot tubs and pools with unique water features.

Use daily to maintain and as needed to increase sanitizer levels.

BROMINE AND STABILIZERCaribbean Blue Bromine Tabs CANNOT be stabilized from the affects of UV rays. Both unstablized chlorine and bromine will evacuate pool water at an equally rapid rate.

Prevent is compatible with all sanitizing and maintenance systems. Effective for preventing and eliminating algae

Algae in swimming pool water is a concern for anyone who takes care of a pool. Millions of algae spores are carried by the wind daily and in addition, some source water may already have algae present in it. Fortunately, algae in pool water is typically not harmful to pool users. However, water with algae is not very inviting.

Algae types are categorized by color

• GREEN: This algae is the most common algae seen in pool water and typically the easiest to control and eliminate.

• YELLOW/BROWN: This algae, has a wispy appearance and is often referred to as Mustard algae. Chlorine alone typically does not rid a pool of yellow algae. Instead, a specialty algaecide must be used for successful removal.

• BLACK: Typically appearing as spots, black algae is one of the more difficult algae to remove. A coating forms over the algae to protect it from treatment products. Vigorous brushing of the trouble area must occur to help remove black algae.

It is easier and far less expensive to prevent algae than to treat the pool once algae is visible. Sanitizing, shocking pool water, and regular use of algaecides will prevent algae growth. To further combat algae, pool surfaces should be brushed weekly. Brushing prevents algae from settling and thriving on surfaces. Additionally, brushing will break up dead pockets of stagnant water in pools where algae thrives.

SUNBLOCK SIZES | 4 LB. | 10 LB

FEATURES & BENEFITS

Contains: Cyanuric acid

Slow dissolving granular product

Reduces chlorine loss due to UV rays

For most pools a once a year water treatment

APPLICATION

Apply only as needed with the pump running.

Table shown indicates application rates

If pool is equipped with plastic piping UV Shield may be added to the skimmer VERY SLOWLY.

UV Shield can be broadcasted across the surface of the pool. Though safe for all surfaces, un-dissolved material should be brushed or SLOWLY vacuumed.

Continuously run pump for 24-48 hours. Avoid backwashing filters during this time.

OVERSTABILIZATION

In residential swimming pools, the ideal range of UV Shield is 30-70 ppm. When these levels exceed 100 ppm, the rate at which sanitizers and oxidizers perform their job in the water decreases rapidly. Water above 100 ppm can remain crystal clear; however those pools could be one pool party away or one bad storm away from a potential water issue that may not be able to be solved unless UV Shield levels are reduced. The only way to safely remove UV Shield from water is to partially drain water from the pool and replace with fresh new water.

Prevents loss of chlorine to the ultraviolet rays of the sun. Reduces pool operating costs.

4-STEP APPLICATION

Not sure if the stain on the pool surface is metallic or organic? Concerns about a long lasting stain or a stain the does not budge with other pool products? These steps were developed to answer these questions and provide a step-by-step solution for removal.

STEP 1 – PREPARE:Take a plastic bottle and fill it with sand or anything that is not buoyant. Replace the cap and attach a sponge with rubber bands to the bottle. The bottle must become submersible.

STEP 2 – TESTING:

With rubber gloves on to protect your hands, saturate the sponge with Caribbean Blue Scale & Metal Solution. Place the bottle with attached sponge and place it directly on the stain under the water. Keep the sponge on the stain for five minutes.

STEP 3 – RESULTS:

After five minutes, if the area near the sponge turns yellow, the stain is likely an organic stain. Organic stains typically can be removed with algae treatment products.

After five minutes, if the area near the sponge returns to the original color, the stain is likely a metallic stain. Proceed to Step 4.

After five minutes, if there is no change in the appearance of the stain where the saturated sponge was placed, the stain may be metallic with multiple layers. Retry Step 2, but instead of five minutes, proceed to let the saturated sponge sit on the stain for fifteen minutes. If there is no success Retry Step 2 for thirty minutes. If the pool or spa finish returns to the original color, refer to Step 4.

STEP 4 – TREATMENT:Raise the pool or spa water above the normal operational level of the pool.

Adjust pH of the pool water to 7.5 or higher. The pH of the pool, after the product application, will decrease slightly. Avoid adjusting pH for 24 hours.

Proceed to add the appropriate amount of Caribbean Blue Scale & Metal Solution based on the results of the test results from Step 3:

• Five Minutes: Add 1 Quart 10,000 gallons of water.

• Fifteen Minutes: Add 1 Quart per 5,000 gallons of water.

• Thirty Minutes: Add 1 Quart per 2,500 gallons of water.

Continue running the pump and filter for three days after applications. Frequently monitor the filter pressure and backwash or clean the filter media as necessary. The water may turn milky indicating the product is working, albeit faster than the filter. Continue filtering until the water clears, Caribbean Blue Sand Assist may help speed up the process.

Caribbean Blue Scale & Metal Solution is not affected by cyanuric acid levels. Scale & Metal Solution is safe to use on all pool or spa surfaces.

When excessive metals are present or Calcium Hardness is elevated, filters should be cleaned with Caribbean Blue Filter Magic.

METALS IN POOLS Metals can be a big headache for anyone operating a swimming pool or spa. The presence of metal in water can lead to water discoloration and staining of surfaces. Unfortunately, the addition of metals to pool water is often unavoidable. Some of the common culprits of metal introduction into pool water are:

• Source water. Especially those using a well water source.

• Water treatment products. Typically specialty algaecides.

• Accidental additions of chemicals used on lawns and landscaping

• Corroding equipment located in or attached to the pool or spa

The ideal color for pool water can be best described as whitish-blue. However, water can change quickly at anytime to red, blue, purple, black, brown or a combination of these colors due to metals in the water. Typically, when the pool water color changes, the clarity of the water does not. Do not let algae, out of balance water, or staining from leaves and other debris let you believe that someone may have a metal issue.

When metals are present in the water, the metal partials are usually completely soluble so most never see the metal present in the water. If metals become visible in the pool as a surface stain or from the water changing color, a variety of changes may have occurred:

• Rapid increase in pH or alkalinity

• Elevated total dissolved solids (TDS)

• Significant amount of cyanuric acid present

• Heavy use of oxidizers (shocks) and chlorine generators

Saves metal problems other products cannot touch.

FEATURES

Crystallizes metals in water allowing filter to remove them from pool water

Removes stains from all pool surfaces

Removes scale

Compatible with all filtration types

May help to decrease elevated levels of calcium hardness

Prevents staining and scaling

Protects plumbing and equipment

Can be used to solve existing water issues or prevent bad water from causing issues

APPLICATION

Clean filter and adjust pH to 7.5 or higher

Best results will occur when water temperature is above 60º and when sanitizer levels are 1ppm or less.

Apply with pump running. Avoid swimming for 8 hours.

TREATMENT:

Temporarily remove metal delivery systems (Nature 2™, Frog) and shut down salt generators. Add 1 quart per 10,000 gallons of water. Run pump continuously for 48 hours.

MAINTENANCE:

Add 3-6 ounces per 10,000 gallons weekly

BROMINE TABLET: A halogen sanitizer (similar to chlorine) sold in a tablet form. It consists mostly of bromine, but does contain a small amount of chlorine. When applied to the water it slowly dissolves and forms hypobromous acid.

HYPOBROMOUS ACID: The chemical that bromine produces that sanitizes and oxidizes water. In other words, hypobromous acid eliminates assorted microorganisms and other organic and inorganic material from the water.

BROMIDE: The used or spent version of hypobromous acid. Loosely, bromide can sometimes be referred to as combined bromine. Bromides have sanitizing potential, more so than chloramines. The concentration of bromide is sometimes referred to as a bromide bank.

BROMINE TERMINOLOGY

BATHERS: Considering how close in proximity everyone is in a spa, it would be wise to make sure that your sanitizer is always disinfecting the water. Brominating Tabs can continuously sanitize water more effectively compared to chlorine.

TEMPERATURE: The warmer the water, the larger the amount of materials such as skin, cosmetics, and body oils that detach from the body. Additionally, bacteria and other microorganisms grow, multiply, and thrive at increased rates the warmer the water gets. In water, bromine does not dissipate as quickly as chlorine.

BALANCE: Spas and hot tubs have aerators and jet pumps. These devises introduce air into the water. The introduction of air will cause the pH in the water to increase. Even though bromine may eventually contribute to pH issues, its sanitizing and oxidizing potential are not significantly inhibited by the pH of water.

Bromine is the ideal sanitizer for most spas for three reasons: bathers, temperature, and balance.
