The Secretary’s Tale of the Poland Spring Carvers meeting of 21 June 2014

the Carvers came to meet. Some came to carve, some to talk, but we all came to eat.

We did a little business, too, not much, but then we hardly everWork too hard at being serious; we only work at being clever.

Our chisels and knives were sharp; our wit was, too.We harassed and teased each other as we all so often do.

Most of it is meant in fun, though sometimes it’s a little hard to tell. But we are always ready with serious ad-vice on how to make our carvings better.

The business portion of our gathering was called to order at 1:20pm by President Robert Grimm. The Secretary’s tale of the April meeting was read and accepted. The Treasurer’s Report was accepted.

OLD BIZ: The Club’s presence was requested at the Poland Spring Heritage Days at the

Poland Spring Inn on 28 June. We will be there. The Shaker Village will hold an Open Farm day on 27 July 12noon-4:00pm. The Belfast Carving Show will be held 12-13 July. The Top of Maine show will be held 25,26,27 July, in Presque Isle. The new critique form for the MWCA show was passed around. A reminder that there is a 15 July cut-off date to enroll in the seminars.

New Biz: It was moved that we contribute $100.00 from the Coffee Fund to the Poland Community Church Food Pantry. The mo-tion carried. Flyers for the MWCA show are avail-able from Bob Grimm. Bob Grimm also gave a report on the recent seminar by Gene Barr on painting a

We continue to meet weekly and have 7 or 8 who attend regularly and several others who ‘show up’ periodically. We gained a couple ‘new’ members after the last UMA Senior Col-lege class ended this Spring. Most are doing their own projects, which vary from Christ-mas ornaments to a sleeping wolf, to relief carvings. It’s fun to watch their progress as

projects. Some are really progressing fast as

Ray Kincher, our new guest, carving a weed base for a heron, Rob carving a block. Thon was carving fetish, Angel working on Christmas Gifts. And I’m working on my Eagle Cane Head. Roy brought in a dolphin he carved and an eagle cane head, very nice work. Justina didn’t make the meeting but sent in a Strawber-ry Pie. Thanks. We also decided what to do for our show booth for this year and for 2015

A couple are going to start the ‘gnome front door’ project, after I showed them ones I had done. It’s a fun project, somewhat along the lines of the bark ‘gnome homes’, but just ‘one sided’. An addition to my seminar at the show...it will include 2 blanks [one pine & one basswood] plus 2 magnets to mount on the back to make it a refrigerator magnet. The

It’s a shame the committee choose to make money on this seminar, instead of funding part of it with the semi-nar funds raised for this purpose...which is why the cost is so high.

  • Hello All - I was invited to Scarborough PD to give a presenta-tion to a group they host each month that is known as Triad. It was a fun time with much interest in the cane project and possibly some new carvers.

Seminar and the eagle cane pattern. No one has re-quested a cane since that presentation but I expect there to be follow up. The police department would like to promote and host an event presenting canes to Scarborough’s WWII veterans. They are putting together something for the paper and will keep me posted. I’ll let you know where that is next month. We’ve had a bit of a surge with cane requests over the past few weeks. WCSH News did a 207 feature on the Cane Project of George Gunning out of Chi-

I’ve been very up front with everyone who has contacted me since that news show and have referred a few requests back to George. He and I have been in contact and we would like to have the 2 programs work together and complement each other. If anyone needs a

What’s HappeningAfter years of doing great work on The Maine Woodcarver, Barbara McCutch-eon and Norma Wing have decided that they are ready to move on. I’m hon-ored that they have asked me to edit this

newsletter. My name is Dick Shryock and I have been doing woodworking for about 15 years.

workbenches and a nightstand. About 6 years ago I became interested woodturning, bought a lathe and a bunch of tools and began turning. I joined the Southern Maine Woodturners and serve now as its web master and president. I’ve turned a lot of bowls and other wooden things and last winter sold some at the Falmouth Winter Farmers Mar-ket – and even played Santa for their Christmas market!

Last fall I had run into Norm Devonshire and Chuck Perry when they were doing carving demonstra-tions at the Cumberland Fair. I had just retired af-ter working at Maine Medical Center for 30 years. Suddenly I had a bunch of free time, thought what Norm and Chuck were doing was interesting so I joined the Poland Carvers chapter of the Maine Wood Carvers Association and started carving. I’ve since tried carving several types of wood but right now I enjoy working with cottonwood bark for most of my carving.

In a much earlier life my wife Sandy and I pub-lished a bi-weekly local newspaper in Gorham, and while at Maine Medical I was responsible for the Emergency Department’s webpage. So I come to you with varied experience and hope to be able to continue producing The Maine Carver to the standards that have been set by my predecessors.

Flowers of the Forest:Barbara M. Tomlinson

1951-2014Barbara Tomlinson was our speaker at the MWCA annual meeting. She had an outstand-ing collection of pelts, snakeskins, bones actual skulls and models, plus a large pho-to collage to enhance her presentations.

Barbara was a licensed falconer and reha-bilitator. She brought her barn owl, barred owl, buzzard and hawk to our Augusta show. She roamed the show and went outside with the bird on her arm answering questions and imparting information about the bird.

My last encounter with the Tomlinson’s oc-curred at the Maine State Wildlife Park in Gray. She and her husband were doing a presentation. At that time Barbara’ said that their main focus was on education and preservation of wildlife. They had an African Raven who spoke and ini-tiate conversation. She never lost her dedica-tion to birds even after losing sight in one eye

Those in the mid-coast area will miss Barbara and it was a privilege to count her as a friend.
