NBA players Ben Gordon Serge Ibaka Fitness Magazine -‐-‐ What the players like to eat before games? For the reason that what you eat can impact how you perform, what the players eat right before a game can be crucial. Serge Ibaka and Ben Gordon make sure to eat easily digestible meals no later than three hours before any game. They also make sure to avoid foods that contain substantial amounts of fats or oils. Serge Ibaka’s favorite dish happens to be pasta. Fortunately for Ibaka meals high in starches are better because they are digested more rapidly than fats or oils. Seeing as Ibaka is from The Congo, he has a developed a very diverse taste in food and an appreciation for spices and herbs. After living in Spain and visiting quite often, Serge grew to love authentic Spanish food. He makes sure he visits his favorite restaurant whenever he returns there. He appreciates the Spanish culture and their food because he likens them to himself – straightforward and exotic. Before games, Ibaka values eating food rich in its spices because of the way his mother prepared his meals throughout his life. He enjoys spices and herbs his mother would use like paprika because of its strong flavor and beautiful deep red color. Another spice he enjoys on his food is saffron. Its sweet aroma and beautiful yellow color can enhance any dish. Ben Gordon is adamant about consuming food that isn’t high in sugar because sweets can cause rapid fluctuations in blood-‐sugar levels and result in low blood sugar and less energy. Gordon makes sure his energy level is always at its highest point for maximum performance on the court. He also steers clear of foods that produce gas such as fruits, raw vegetables, or beans. If Gordon has a sufficient amount of hours before a game he loves to eat well-‐seasoned chicken. He doesn’t have a preference on what part of the chicken has to be prepared for him as it is prepared with a side of mashed potatoes. Staying true to his British background, he enjoys eating creamy mashed potatoes and it’s a plus because it benefits his carbohydrate digestion before games. Protein foods are also a red flag for Gordon. He only consumes moderate amounts of protein on game days. High-‐protein meals can lead to dehydration, which can counteract his consumption of liquids. Gordon knows he should ingest a lot of carbohydrates at least 1-‐3 hours before any game. He benefits from snacks like popcorn and pretzels that are high in carbohydrates and have some added salt, which stimulates thirst-‐enhancing intake of the most vital nutrient-‐water. Serge Ibaka and Ben Gordon always remember to drink plenty of fluids with their pre-‐game meals. They maneuver away from food and drink choices that may drain and waste energy that would otherwise be used during the game.
