This programme will be offered to students who have achieved very high GCSE grades (majority As and A*s). They will be competing for places to study at one of the top universities around the country; including Oxbridge (Oxford and Cambridge) and Russell Group Universities for courses such as Medicine, Dentistry and Law. For such courses and universities, students will be required to show that they can be stretched and challenged and achieve outside of their academic field. They will need to demonstrate some of the much sought after skills such as in-depth research ability, independent and creative thinking and presentation and interview skills.

We offer the Extended Project Qualification (equivalent to an A Level qualification) in which students choose an area that they would like to research. They work alongside a supervisor to develop a plan for their research, write up their project and then present their findings to an audience. Increasingly students are being expected to have this qualification alongside their A levels for the top universities. This qualification shows students are passionate about their subject or an area assimilated to their subject, and can work independently.

EXTENDED PROJECT

Students wishing to apply for Medicine are given the opportunity to complete work experience at a hospital in the summer term of Year 12, and participate in medical workshops with working health professionals and successful medical students from the school.

BRILLIANT CLUB

The Brilliant Club is an award winning charity that exists to widen access to highly-selective universities for pupils from under-represented groups.

In The Scholars Programme, PhD tutors deliver programmes of university-style tutorials to small groups of pupils in Year 12 to develop the knowledge, skills and ambition that help those pupils to secure places at highly-selective universities.

Students submit an assignment that will be graded by a participating university. Being part of this scheme will be highly regarded when applying for university.

For those considering applying to Oxbridge, we offer a comprehensive package to support students. Students are encouraged to attend Oxbridge taster days and apply for residential courses. We also liaise with Oxbridge representatives regarding interviews and personal statement writing. Students applying for Russell Group universities and courses may need to take exams such as BMAT or STEP and students will be advised of these details.

At FHS Sixth Form we offer our students a variety of opportunities to enhance their life experiences, build self confidence and learn respect. By encouraging students to participate we aim to support their applications for the world of work or higher education. Through enrichment, it is evident that FHS students grow into well rounded, open minded individuals who are recognised on a local, regional and national scale.

Student voiceWe have a number of projects on offer for students in the sixth form. Students can be elected as a form rep, and subsequently sit on the school council. We also have a sixth form committee led by the Head Boy and Head Girl. Students may also sign up to be prefects, taking responsibility on lunch duties and events across the school. Opportunities for students to be leaders for the Jack Petchey Award are on offer as well as various charity projects.

Those students who have gained A*s & As in the main at GCSE, may have the opportunity to study 4 A Level subjects.

Course criteria and progressionA Levels

These are academic qualifications which require the ability to do extended reading and writing.

To study A Levels you will need five GCSEs at grade C or above (including English Language and Maths at grade 4) and at least a grade B/6 in the subjects you wish to take for A Level. In addition students must have a minimum GCSE APS of 4.5. To study Maths and Sciences you will need an APS of 5.

Most students will study three subjects. Students who have outstanding GCSEs (A*-A) will be guided to study four.

The sixth form team will guide you on to the correct courses based on how well you have done at GCSE.

AS/A Levels provide a route to university.

WHAT ARE A LEVELS? A LEVEL CRITERIA

In subjects not taken at GCSE an associated GCSE will be taken into account. For example: B in History, Geography or English Language/Literature for A Level Government & Politics.

BTEC grades would only be accepted as one grade within the 5 A*-C grades and for Sciences a B must be obtained in both in the Core & Additional Science or Triple Science subject.

In Maths and Science subjects, grade B/6 applicants must be endorsed by the Head of Department on completion of an entrance exam at the very beginning of term to determine their suitability for the course. Students will be re-coursed where they do not meet the minimum expectation on these exams. Student will be expected to undertake preparatory work over the summer.

All students will be entered for AS exams in Year 12. Students must pass all three exams in order to progress to Year 13. If students do not pass three AS exams they will be re-coursed back to Year 12.

BTECs are vocational qualifications that provide a more practical, real-world approach to learning and skill development alongside a key theoretical background.

BTECs continue to be developed and updated for industry requirements and in response to the needs of learners. This ensures that learners gain maximum benefit from their work whilst qualifying. This could be in readiness for the workplace or continued study at the next level, whether in an academic environment or a more specialist vocational area.

BTEC qualifications that we offer are Extended Certificate (equivalent to one A Level) and Diploma (equivalent to two A Levels). They offer natural progression along a vocational path to university or the world of work.

Level 3 National Diploma & National Extended Certificate In order to access BTEC level 3 courses students will need to attain a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade A*-D (High grade 3s in English Language and Maths). This can include BTEC courses previously followed. Please check individual subjects for entrance criteria. Options at this level will be to retake GCSE English and/or Maths if they have a grade 3.

All courses require students to pass 40% external examination/assessment units. Students will sit examinations in Year 12. Students that fail these exams may not be able to progress to Year 13.

BTEC Level 2 In order to access BTEC level 2 courses, students will need 4 GCSE or equivalent passes, A*-E (grade 2 or above including English Language and Maths.)

Work Experience All students undertaking BTEC courses will be required to complete work experience. Work experience is a compulsory part of BTEC courses.

The school will look at all students on an individual basis and whether they are suitable for the courses chosen. External students will be requested to show their birth certificate, current passport, proof of address and all relevant qualifications.

It will be up to the discretion of the Sixth Form Team as to which courses students are able to follow. Grade B students will be re-coursed if they do not meet the minimum requirements of the entrance tests for Maths and the Sciences.

A Level In order to continue into Year 13 students will need to have attained a minimum of 3 Es at AS Level. In circumstances where students have not achieved 3 Es, they will be required to attend an interview with the Director of Sixth Form to look at options and be re-coursed.

BTEC Level 3 Courses In order to continue into Year 13 students will need to be working towards their minimum target grades at BTEC level 3 in all of their subjects. This includes passing any external assessments or exams.

CONTENT OF COURSE: Students will follow a programme that will allow for personal, creative responses to a variety of observationally based projects. Students will experience a broad range of materials and techniques used by artists. A specialist art vocabulary will be developed along with knowledge and understanding of the place of Art and Design in history and contemporary society. Visits will be made to museums and current exhibitions.

PROGRESSION ROUTES: The Arts is the 3rd Largest industry in the UK and A level Art and Design will give you the opportunity to advance into a Creative based career.

A Level Art can lead to a degree in your chosen specialism at university, a BTEC Higher National Diploma, a BTEC Foundation Diploma in Art or an Art Foundation course. Art can lead to the following careers: graphic design, textile design, illustration, web design, set dressing, interior design, jewellery design, sculpture or ceramics.

CONTENT OF COURSE: Paper 1: (Inorganic Chemistry and some Physical Chemistry) 35% Inorganic chemistry, relevant practical skills and relevant physical chemistry equilibria, acids and bases and redox. Paper 2: (Organic Chemistry and some Physical Chemistry) 35% Organic chemistry, relevant practical skills, and relevant physical chemistry Paper 3: (Practical skills, data handling and synopsis) 30%

The course covers the three key branches of chemistry: organic, inorganic and physical; and also allows pupils to develop analytical skills in a series of core and advanced practicals.

PROGRESSION ROUTES: There are a huge range of degree courses available to study either Chemistry itself or combined with other subjects such as: Medicinal Chemistry, Forensic Science and Toxicology, Pharmacology, certain courses require a GCE in Chemistry. These include courses such as Chemical Engineering, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Biological Sciences, Environmental Science, Pharmacy and Dentistry.

PROGRESSION ROUTES: A Level Drama and Theatre Studies provides a solid route for studying Theatre Studies or Drama at university. Students looking to embark on a career where public speaking is involved, e.g. Law, would also benefit from performance experience.

Described as the ‘must-have’ A-Level by The Guardian in 2015, Geography is not just the study of the world, but also how the world works and how we are placed within it. Students studying Geography typically hold a keen interest in current affairs and will enjoy the field visits to study the world around us.

PROGRESSION ROUTES: Geography A Level provides an excellent foundation for further study at university, either through a Geography degree or as a supporting subject for other degrees. Qualifications in Geography are highly sought after in a wide range of occupations, including journalism, law, and business. It is the skills learnt studying Geography that make geographers eminently employable in the wider world. FHS Geography A-Level students have gone on to study subjects such as Economics, Business and Geography at University.

CONTENT OF COURSE: English literature covers poetry, prose and Drama based on selected texts chosen from set-text lists. Students will study a variety of literary texts, ranging from science fiction and political drama to exploring modern and pre-20th century poetry. The coursework unit in the second year of study will involve more critical writing, applying theory to texts of their own choice.

The course is assessed through a combination of exam and coursework:

CONTENT OF COURSE: A level students will study four units, which will include several countries history, covering a 200 year period.

A Level subject content: Nationalism, dictatorship and democracy in the Twentieth century Europe:

• Germany and West Germany 1918 - 89 • The rise and fall of fascism in Italy 1911 - 46 • Rebellion and Disorder under the Tudors 1485 - 1603 • The Causes of the Russian Revolution, 1917.

PROGRESSION ROUTES: A good grade at A Level History is recognised by all universities as a facilitating subject for entry into a wide range of undergraduate disciplines and courses. Studying A Level History also provides graduates the opportunity to enter into a wider range of occupations, including law, journalism, education, estate agent, a financial analyst and business consultant.

CONTENT OF COURSE: Recording: 20% Develop skills using production tools and techniques to capture, edit, process and mix an audio recording Technology Based Composition: 20% Creating, editing, manipulating and structuring sounds to produce a technology-based Composition. You will become comfortable working and recording in the studio and producing your own music, using professional software. Level 3 Diploma/Extended Certificate in Travel & Tourism Studying a BTEC Level 3 course in Travel and Tourism will allow students to cover a variety of core and specialist subjects that will prepare them for further study or a career in the industry. Units include The World of Travel and Tourism, Global Destinations, Managing the Customer Experience and Visitor Attractions. Students will gain transferable skills and knowledge such as employability skills and communication as well as an understanding of the business environment. How to applySTAGE 4 For internal students, you will need to complete an options survey, organised by the sixth form team. All Year 11 students will need to apply by returning a reply slip from a letter sent in January 2017.

For external students, you will receive a letter inviting you for an interview so that you can discuss the most appropriate pathway for you. STAGE 5 For external students bring your progress profile with you to your interview. After the interview you will be notified by letter as to whether you have a conditional offer.
