We have held our elections, thank you Faith for putting alltogether.Members have recently collected for the Heart Foundationand donated to the Flight Life Trust and New Zealand SuicidePrevention Trust.

Should We Worry.

With our Government making noises about the possibility ofmajor mining projects for precious metal in certain parts ofthis country. Should we be worried about them despoilingparts of our beautiful area.

Back in the 1920’s on a property owned by the Davidsonfamily in the Rimutaka’s, very close to Featherston, gold wasfound. The news spread quickly and prospecting took place, naturally the family had first claim and decided to call in therock expert Trembar Cooksley.

To the families dismay he soon discovered it was fools gold.So the family up stakes and took off overseas we are notsure whether it was to Australia or Nelson, whichever theyleft but the diggings are still there, if you know where to look.We will not be telling the Government.

There is also an old gold mine shaft down the Western LakeRoad, again no great quantities of gold were found.

So even if the Government do find out it looks as though ourlittle piece of paradise will be safe for many more years tocome.

Local Talent RecognizedThe Featherston hockey fraternity can be very proud of theachievements of one of its youngsters. Benedict vanWoerkom, a Year 13 student at Wairarapa College, has earnedselection in the 16 man Capital U21 team to contest theNational NZ U21 Tournament in Palmerston North in May.

Benedict began his hockey as a four year old, playing in a StTeresa’s School team the year before he started school. Sincethen he has represented the Wairarapa Association in everyage-group team, the highlight of which is undoubtedly coming2nd at National U15 Tournament in 2006. He has all theattributes of a striker – superb fitness, a natural ability to reada game and has incredible close dribbling skills.

He quickly established himself in thepowerful Wairarapa College 1st XIwhich has won the WellingtonSecondary Schools Premier 1 Gradecompetition three of the last fouryears. For the last two seasons he hasbeen a hard working member of theDalefield Senior Men’s team whichcompetes in the Wellington Premier 1Men’s Grade.

As a senior member of the eliteHockey Wairarapa AcademyBenedict’s dedication is an exampleto the other members. He enjoysgiving his time to help coach youngerplayers and pass on his knowledgeand experience.

Last year he gained a place in the Wellington Senior Men’steam who won their National Tournament, playing againstcurrent and former Blacksticks and scoring four goals in theprocess.

Recently his trial for the Capital U21 team pitted him againstplayers from Nelson, Wellington and the Wairarapa regions, all of whom were much older than him and he was successfulin gaining a place in this team. He will now take the field witha current NZ Blackstick, several junior Blacksticks and NZU18 Tiger Turf players who are all part of the Capital team, hoping to defend the title they won last year. Not too bad so far for a small town country boy!All those hours of training with family and friends at theFeatherston Turf have paid off. He would like to thank allthose who have helped him along the way as he strives tofulfill his aspirations of becoming a Blackstick one day!

on almost all types of material

With her baby due in just over a month, 17-year-old JaynieAbbis from the South Wairarapa thought she’d left it too lateto get along to any kind of birth education classes. Then hermidwife told her about the small group sessions run especiallyfor young mums by antenatal educator Michelle Thomas. Nowshe’s happy about the information and support she’s got fromthe sessions and feels much better prepared for what’s ahead.

Michelle organised a shorter series of sessions for Jaynie andclassmate Joanna Wong Pown, another young mum whosebaby is due at about the same time. “The classes with Michelleare good because you get to talk about things one-on-oneand it’s really relaxed’” says Joanna. “Also, these classes fitin really well for me because they’re during the day and thatmakes getting transport a lot easier.”

Michelle’s classes are designed especially for young mums, usually one-hour daytime sessions over a six week period. There’s no boring lectures, no big fuss – just great support, clear information and lots of laughs. “It’s an environment thatyoung mums feel really safe in,” Michelle says. “Many of thepregnancies are unplanned and often these young womenaren’t supported by their partners. They bring along their mumor a good friend to the classes and those people will be theirsupport person. Their lives are often very complex and weare very open to what’s going on for them. We don’t makeany judgements here, we just focus on making sure they getall the information they need and find out about how they canget help and support after the baby arrives.”

Both Jaynie and Joanna think that the free classes are a reallygood option for young pregnant women in the Wairarapa.“It’s good to learn about this, especially if it’s your first, justso you know,” says Jaynie. “If you learn about things now, soit’s not all so new once you’ve had the baby. I didn’t realisehow much there was to talk through. Some people mightthink ‘I don’t need to know all that stuff,’ but it would bepretty scary going in to labour and not knowing what’shappening or how to handle it.”

As well as covering what to expect in labour, Michelle talksabout ways of coping with a newborn and what things mightbe like in those early weeks of parenting. She gives tips onsleeping and breastfeeding and gives her young mumsinformation about how and where they can get help if theyneed it once the baby has arrived.

For more information about antenatal information for youngWairarapa mothers, please contact Michelle Thomas on0800 946 9800 extension 4200

Bell Street….A Tribute to Featherston.

Former Featherston musician Bernard Carey has written amusical tribute to the street he used to call home-Bell Street.

His hometown buddy Carl Evenson, now of Lower Hutttogether with two other friends, Wellington musician StellaClyde and Aucklander Regan Bell have joined him to formthe Bell Street Band.

Bernard and Carl were well known in Featherston asmembers of the “Kal-Q-Lated” band. Carl later moved toUpper Hutt and became lead singer for the chart bustingband “The Fourmyula” which won the New ZealanderEntertainers of the Year award in 1970, and their tune“Nature” was voted New Zealand’s greatest pop song in2001.

Bernard and Carl travel led overseas with their respectivebands and then returned to New Zealand where they keptpursuing their careers as musicians. However they have neverforgotten their musical or family roots which are inFeatherston.Bernard said Bell Street is symbolic because it is where helived also where he went to school, went to church, used topractice music in his new tin shed, play gigs at the ANZACHall, spend hours at the swimming baths which were acrossthe bottom of Bell Street in Hickson Street and visit the railwaycrossing with it’s view of the nearby Railway Station.

The railway played a big part in his very early life, as hisfather, Norman Carey, was an engine driver at Cross Creekspending his days driving Fell Engines up and down thefamous Rimutaka Incline.

Bernard says the CD “Bell Street” could be classified as“Contemporary Rock”. It is on sale at the Fell Museum for$10.

Cross Creek Blues ClubOur club night on 7th April was another great success with afull house of Blues Rock and Jazz enthusiasts.Club membersgave a good account of themselves with Gerrard Hayes, his8 year old daughter Meagan (great drumming) and TonyPenman starting the evening off.Guest Artist Shayn Hurricane Wills was all we expected himto be with his expert guitar and harmonica playing that keptthe crowd toe tapping through to the end of his last tune. The guest artist for the 5th of May session will be our oldfavourite from Paekakariki “Al Witham” Al has been describedas a brilliant guitarist with a voice lying somewhere betweenJohnny Cash, Tom Waites, and a bag of gravelly cement. Hislatest CD “Faultlines” crafted in November last year with thehelp of some of Wellingtons top musicians including “WayneMason” is selling well. Our June2nd session will have a full programme of membersonly giving the entertainment .The last time we did this provedto be a real winner as the local talent is quite outstanding. Both these sessions will start at 7-30pm at our club venue“The Tin Hut” Tauherinikau $2 members $5 Non members. If you want two great nights out in May and June, be there.

Attention All Featherston DogOwners

Have you seen the new Dog Park? It is located next to thetransfer station on Johnson Street. This is the perfect placeto take your dog and let them have a good old run aroundand not worry about them taking off down the street. Thearea is completely fenced and there is a water trough locatedalong the fence line next to the green waste area. As fundingbecomes available the intention is to add some seating areasand shade.

Also, I hope you have seen the new signage at the SportsFields (Card Reserve). Over the years there have been anumber of complaints regarding dogs on the sports fields, ranging from doggie do’s to intimidating behaviour.

The Sports fields are now off limits for dogs, the fine is$750.00. All dogs must be leashed when taken out walking, please remember to have a plastic bag on you for the timesyour dog can not hold on!

History books can be fusty or fun and there is nodoubt that Mike Beckett’s look at life in Featherstonover the years is the latter. The book bounces throughMike’s life, growing up in a small town where you kneweverybody and everybody knew you.

Those of a similar age as Mike will smile as they tripdown memory lane. Others will gain a humorous insight tolife as it was then, not just before IPods and cell phones butwhen not all houses even had electricity, most people went tochurch and women weren’t allowed in public bars.

The tale is simple but covers lives that survived thehardships of war to see New Zealand prosper. It’s an easyread and a entertaining way to spend an evening or two.Adrienne Staples Mayor South Wairarapa

In this lively book Mike Beckett gently takes us in handand leads us through the enchantments of Featherston’spast. We see more than fifty years of the town’s characters, both minor and major, and we are given insight into the delightsof growing up as a shopkeeper’s son. We share the travailsof youthful exuberance and the more sobering experiences ofbecoming a shopkeeper. We experience the complications ofbeing a provincial newspaper proprietor - and join Mike as heassumed the high office of South Wairarapa District Councillor.Through the journey, Mike allows us an affectionate look atthe workings of the small-town that guards the gateway to theWairarapa.Gareth Winter Archivist Wairarapa Archive
