Dear Members,Thanksgiving is right around the corner; a reminder to be appreciative for all we have, including our FSCC family. Over the past three months, I have had the opportunity to listen to your feedback, engage our new members, and create forums that allow

idea sharing toward improvement. At this time of being thankful, I want to share my gratitude for your support of the Club and our eorts toward becoming one of the premier clubs in Tampa Bay.

The Rush event was a resounding success. Lew Smither III and the Member Committee assembled the tournament elegantly, in a manner betting the late John Rush. Thank you to the committee and teams for participating in one of our most honored celebrations. Thank you to Mr. Markel for hostingthe closing festivities on the Landing, with abeautiful sunset as our backdrop.

In golf news, Feather Sound Country Club will host the U.S. Open qualier on May 12, 2016! Mike Strube and his team have worked tirelessly over the past two years to create exceptional course conditions, allowing us host this prestigious event. Also featured this month, Lew and Mike will host a LIVE Turf Talk. They will answer your questions about coursemaintenance both in and out of season -don’t miss this night of education and fun!

In tennis, we completed the much-anticipated court relining ahead of schedule! Along with new nets, our revitalized court surface will have all players bringing their A-game. To add some pep to your tennis step, Mitchell has created a Thanksgiving camp forchildren, juniors and adults taking place over the local school holiday break. Details are includedin this issue.

In social news, wine glass painting was a huge hit!To keep the creativity owing, we are bringing back our art instructors for canvas painting this month. Arthur Murray Dance Centers will be on site this month to bring you both Ballroom and Salsa dance

As the cooler weather approaches, long drives and faster greens will become the norm. The growth rate and wear tolerance of the Bermuda grass in the fairways and on the greens is slowing down. With cooler temperatures, cart trac will be a concern; the turf’s wear tolerance decreases drastically as nighttime temperatures dip into the 60s and daytime temperatures stay in the 80s. Rounds of golf tend to increase this time of year, as Florida’s weather conditions become more play-er-friendly. Routing the golf cart trac will be necessary to minimize wear and tear on slow-growing turf in high trac areas throughout the course. We encourage golfers to utilize nearby cart paths and avoid driving close to the greens and tee complexes. We don’t like having stakes or signs out on the course, but at this time of year, we must pro-tect the turf in the high trac areas by any means necessary.

Golfers give a variety of answers to this question. I hear theseresponses most frequently:

• Golf is the game of a lifetime. So if you started playing as a youngster, a teenager, or started later in life, you can continue to learn and enjoy the game – no matter how long you’ve played!

• Golfers play in some of the most beautiful surroundings nature has to oer. Take this year’s President’s Cup location, held in stunning Korea. Then there are Links courses locat-ed by the seashore; there are courses located in the rolling mountains that are challenging to play and beautiful to look at. Not only is the golng amazing, but you’ll enjoy all Mother Nature has to oer.

• Golf is a sport you can play either competitively or as a social activity. Whether you would like to go out by yourself to work on your game, engage in a game with others, or putt on the green to relax and unwind after a day of work, golf allows all of these opportunities.

• Golf is a wonderful group activity, especially because you can play with golfers in various learning stages. It is not necessary that you be equally experienced. The USGA handicap system puts all players on an equal level and as a result, you can enjoy playing golf with individuals of all skill levels.

For those that are actively seeking to improve their game,Feather Sound Country Club is in the process of establishing a clinic program. Our members will discuss specic topics in a roundtable format, with hands on experience! All participants will enjoy the learning opportunity and benet from peer discussions. These clinics will be limited to the rst eight people who sign up in the golf shop. The golf team is also in the planning stages of a program called, “Golf Talk Live with Lew”. This will be a unique forum talking about current aairs and topics in golf. Further information will be supplied for these two events in the coming weeks, so keep an eye out for your Tuesday email digest!

There has been a lot of new equipment design in irons and metal woods. I encourage you to come to the pro shop and select the proper tools with guidance. Please don’t go out and buy the “latest, greatest, most expensive product” you heard about through adver-tising. Let us use our expertise to help you make the proper club selection and tting. The right tools will benet you in your ball striking and, to be frank, just because a product is new and costly doesn’t ensure you’ll have good results with it. We are committed to provide you “The Best Golf Experience” here at Feather Sound Country Club, and we hope you’ll allow us to personally show you how we’re becoming one of the top Clubs in the Tampa Bay area.

Here’s to Good Golf,

Lew Smither IIIDirector of Golf

This year’s major cultural practices are nished! We will still continue our solid tine aerication during the fall and winter months, which will have minimal disruption to the course’s playing surface. Practices such as solid tine aerication of the greens, light and frequent grooming, and topdressing with sand to aid in smoothing imperfections on the putting surface will also continue to benet both the course and our golfers!

As always, we encourage our golfers and their guests to please ll their divots and repair their ball marks. Plus one or two…

Thanks!

Mike StrubeGolf Course Superintendent

1. A great two-handed backhand starts with the perfect set-up. First, the grip: The most commonly used grips are the Conti-nental for your dominant hand and an Eastern forehand grip for your non-dominant hand. As the ball arrives, split-step and then execute your unit turn. Your shoulders and your racquet will turn together. The leg closest to the incoming ball should step out a little as you turn, so you don’t close yourself o to the ball. You’ll need space to step into the shot.

2. How much shoulder turn is ideal? Enough so that you have to look over your dominant shoulder at the incoming ball. As you prepare to hit this shot, all of your weight should be on your back foot, ready to transfer to your front foot. Take your racquet back above the level of the ball (10 o’clock or 2 o’clock, whichever is easier for you to visualize, is an ideal height). Your shoulders should be level and your knees slightly bent.

3. Relax your hand and let your racquet head drop below the height of the ball just before transferring weight to your front foot, and step into the shot. Don’t strangle your racquet han-dle. This looping motion needs to be uid in order to generate racquet-head speed so that you can create both power and spin by brushing up the back of the ball. The butt cap of your racquet should be aimed at the ball. Your forward swing will begin as you transfer your weight.

Five Steps to the Perfect Two-Handed Backhand4. Uncoil your shoulders and make contact out in front. You’ll

notice that professional players have dierent arm positions at contact; the most eective for a club player is to have both elbows slightly bent. At contact, all of your energy from your legs, shoulder and arms should be driving forward and through the ball, toward your target.

5. On the follow-through, your elbows should nish high. Your non-dominant hand pulls your rear hip through the nish and you’ll face the net. Notice that at the start of this shot, you were looking over your dominant shoulder at the ball. Now you’re looking over your non-dominant shoulder—that’s how much shoulder turn is required. When you plant your outside foot, you’ll push o of it and recover with a shue or a crossover step, depending where you are on court and the trajectory of your opponent’s next shot.

I hope this tip has been able to help your backhand develop and raise it to the next level. If you have any questions or you would like to talk “tennis shop”, please come on down to the tennis hut. I look forward to hearing from all of you.

Best of luck in your tennis games!

Mitchell S. David, USPTA/USPTRDirector of Tennis

Hello Members! Feather Sound Country Club has seen many changes over the years. While we may fondly reminisce about past events, tournaments, matches, and social gatherings, we also look forward to making new memories for our membership. November and December will bring Thanksgiving dinners, holiday gatherings, and themed parties that we want you to nd enjoyable.

As a new addition to the Feather Sound family, I am trying to decide what holiday events our members would be most interested in attending this year. While our recent events were fresh and fun, I did not get the opportunity to meet many of you. Therefore, I would like to take the opportunity to reach out to you individually for feedback as to what types of events you’d like to see or be interested in attend-ing. If you have a suggestion or idea for an event that you feel everyone would enjoy, stop in my oce and share it with me. I can be reached at (727) 498-0005, or [email protected].

I know we will have the ballrooms, restaurants, and deck spaces lled with excite-ment again. We are working hard to make Feather Sound a place where there is always something to do and something to look forward to. I hope you will join me in making the holiday season merry and festive. I look forward to meeting all of our members in the next few months.

Best regards,

Anita Fabrizio

Chillounge has teamed up with the Circus Arts Conservatory and Nock Productions to create something completely dierent. Dubbed “Cirque du Chill,” this year’s event will feature an all-new circus theme, loaded with performances by world-class circus performers in addition to the food, drink and party atmosphere the party is already known for.

The evening will be full of surprises as guests engage in breath-taking enter-tainment that only the circus arts can provide. Expect the unexpected as ac-robats perform extraordinary feats of balance and agility, aerialists soar and impress with their beauty and grace, a contortionist dramatically bends and exes her body in mind boggling po-sitions, a juggler impresses with their amazing dexterity, a high-ying dare-devil dees death and a team of hand balancers dazzle and inspire with their incredible strength.

FEATHER SOUND COUNTRY CLUBCOOKBOOK PROJECT

e holiday season is right around the corner! is year, we will launch the rst annual FSCC festive cookbook containing our members’ family favorite recipes, and we need your help.

We’re looking for entries for the following categories:Appetizers - Side Dishes - Main Courses - Desserts - Cocktails

ese recipes will be published in professionally printed books, available for sale startingDecember 18. We look forward to featuring your family favorites!

Beginning ursday, November 12, Chef Je will feature two dishes per week during Prime Rib Buets through the end of the year! If you’d like to participate, we ask that you submit your favorite recipes to Meghan Forehand at [email protected] by November 10th.

Chef Je’s Cooking Tip For The Holiday Season:

ORGANIZEYOURSELF!Write a prep list and break that list down into smaller ‘to do’ items, like “grate cheese” and “grind pepper” and “pull out plates”. You will see that what you consider a simple meal may actually have more than forty steps! If ten of those steps require ten minutes each, and another ten of those steps take ve minutes each, you’regoing to need two and a half hours of prep time. And thatdoesn’t include phone calls, bathroom breaks, or changingthe radio station! Write down the steps and then cross them o. Not only doyou ensure your entertaining will be less stressful and morefun, but it’s extremely satisfying to cross items o of the list! Good luck!Chef Je
