Mrs. Matras Jobs 

Mrs. Matras is the Orchestra teacher here at Orchard Middle School. She decided she wanted to be a music teacher when she was in 7th grade.  Her orchestra teacher really inspired her to be a music teacher because her teacher did so much to change her life, so she decided to do the same for other children. She wanted to start doing orchestra when she saw a concert in 4th grade. Mrs. Matras loves her job because she can have a full orchestra, and works with children.   

          Family Mrs. Matras has many different pets. She has 2 cats that are named Little Bit and James Bond. Mrs. Matras also has a dog named Otis, and 15 chickens. All her children are grown up, so her favorite part of the week is when she eats dinner with her family on Sunday.         Hobbies 

       Mrs. Matras has many different hobbies. Since Mrs. Matras lives on a farm, playing with her chickens helps her pass the time. She also loves gardening different assortments of fruits and vegetables. Mrs. Matras plays the viola which is one of her favorite things to do.

Mrs. Benedict Mrs. Benedict is a 5th grade science teacher here at Orchard Middle School. She is also a Science Olympiad coach.  

 Growing up 

      Mrs. Benedict grew up in a community where there were no houses behind hers so she would often go barefooted through the woods and jump over logs. She was always the tall child, so she used to play basketball, softball, and soccer. When she got to middle school, she stopped. She did swimming and kayaking for exercise. Also, Mrs. Benedict liked to play in the creek that was in her backyard. 

                                Jobs 

Mrs. Benedict first decided to become a teacher when she was a junior in college. She decided that teaching was the job she was going to commit herself to when she got a non-teaching job offer. She loves her job because she can be with kids and see their growth all day. She realized that she really wanted to coach Science Olympiad after it happened. Mrs. Benedict realized it was such a good opportunity to be part of. She really wanted to teach science because she was passionate about it. 

   Other 

Mrs. Benedict is married and has grown-up children who like to travel with her and also many grandchildren. She has a little golden retriever puppy who is always joyful. Mrs. Benedict loves to go hiking, especially in the Cuyahoga Valley. She also likes traveling, kayaking, scrapbooking, eating ice cream, and taking photographs.

YAY OR NAY? Anna Emch 

SHOULD SCHOOL BUSES HAVE SEATBELTS? 

Almost everymonth on the news there is               a fatal bus crash where the bus is in a ditch, a                       pond, or has its nose in a tree. Kids are getting                     injured, sometimes killed in these crashes!           Even though we have been using them for so                 long, busses may not be as safe as we thought.                   Should the buses have seatbelts to keep             students safe? Is it a yay, or a nay?  Yay 

Police officers give car drivers tickets every                 single day because they don’t have their             seatbelts on. They say it protects us from               gettingmajor injures or getting killed when in a                 car crash. Buses can be more dangerous than               cars, so why don't they have seatbelts?             Seatbelts will help secure students when riding             the bus, and they will feel safe when heading                 home. Seat belts will prevent injures of             students who have to ride the bus. About 134                 kids or bus drivers die every single year               because of the bus crashes. Let’s hope to lower                 the death count to 0 with seatbelts.  

 

Nay We all know the buses seats can get a 

little cramped at some point. Since so many kids have to ride the bus, sometimes bus drivers have to have 3 kids sit in the same seat! Seatbelts would just make everything more uncomfortable for students. Smaller kids would slip right through the large seatbelts, and get hurt while doing so. For some kids, seat belts may be too tight, so they will have to unbuckle and then not be able to wear the seatbelt. When a bus driver needs to stop quickly, with seatbelts, the children's neck could be broken. Their body is held back, but not head. The head would be lurched forward, and then quickly snap back, which could kill, or severely injure the child. Buses may be dangerous, but not that dangerous. In the meantime...   

Buses are dangerous. Almost everyone knows that. Unless they make the buses safer, we’re stuck with them. In the meantime, STAY SAFE!

He’s At It Again! By Hunter Ledford 

Once again my lazy and strange cat Mr. Stinky is at his strange ways again. The day was the 23rd of April and it was so warm that my family and I were all outside doing landscaping. My mom gave me a couple flower pots and some baskets to spray with paint, then started mowing the grass. 

The next day, I spent most of the day at my friends house. When we got back to our house, my mom asked me if I wanted a medium sized brown basket. Because I love art, I took it. That night I used some of my spray paint to make it a light purple. Then, I spray painted it more. I used some felt to make one side of it a cover. Also, I took a old blanket to have a soft seat. I gave it to Mr. Stinky. Once again he was so adorable.   HOW TO MAKE A SMALL PET BASKET CARRIER: 

1. Find a medium sized basket bigger than your pet and deep enough to put in a folded up blanket. 

2. Use paint to color the basket. If you can, you should use spray paint. 3. If you don't have a big enough piece of cloth, sew together 2 pieces 

of colorful cloth. Then find a way to attach it to the basket.  4. Fold up blanket to put inside. 5. Place your pet into the finished basket. It might take your pet a 

couple of minutes to get used to. It's best for lazy pets like Mr. Stinky.  Stinky is always cute, weird and strange all the time, so there is 

always something to write about!

A: “ My Countdown story was based on my life growing up.”   Q: How long on average does it take you to write a book? A: “It takes about 1 to 15 years to write a book.”   Q: What is your favorite childhood book? A: “‘Mr. Dog’ by Margaret Wise Brown.” 

Q: If you didn’t write, what would you do for work? A: “Teach. I would like to teach other kids to read and write books.”  Q: How do you select the names of your characters? A: “I  based the character names on the character's traits. For example : Ruby because she has red hair.”  Q: How many hours a day do you write? A: “I write each day for 3 hours. Or more than 3 hours when I’m on deadline time.”  Q: Does writing energize or exhaust you? A: “Exhaust in the middle of writing and when finishing, it’s energizing.”  Q: Do you get writer’s block, and if so, what do you do to stop it? A: “When I get stuck, sometimes I either garden or take a long walk.”  Q: What inspires you most for your writing? A: “My life and my relatives.”

Wearable Technology By Melinda Goolamier 

 GOOGLE GLASS  What is it? The google Glass is just like smart glasses. It has many abilities just like  a normal smart phone. The google glass is something that you attach to the side of your glasses.  How Does It Work ? A touchpad is located on the side of Google Glass, allowing users to control the device by swiping through a timeline-like interface displayed on the screen. Sliding backward shows current events, such as weather, and sliding forward shows past events, such as phone calls, photos, circle updates, etc.  How Is It Usefull? Once Glass is activated, wearers can say an action, such as "Take a picture", "Record a video", "Hangout with Riley", "Google ,what year was Wikipedia founded?'", "Give me directions to the Eiffel Tower", and "Send a message to Ricky". The google glass can help you with your everyday life and errands.  

Cicret Bracelet  What is it? With the Cicret Bracelet, you can make your skin your new touchscreen. Read your mails, play your favorite games, answer your calls, check the weather, find your way when you are driving. Do whatever you want on your arm.  How Does It Work? Low energy Bluetooth will communicate with your mobile device. A Wi-Fi component will connect you to the network. It will have a vibrate function and a micro USB charging port.  How Is it Usefull? Flicking your wrist will initiate the display on your arm. The Cicret bracelet will be water resistant and durable. Flick, swipe, pinch and zoom functionality will be supported along with tap to text. You will even be able to answer the phone with a flick of your wrist. 

 

Virtual Reality Headset  What Is It? The Virtual Reality Headset is a headset that is 3d. When you put the headset on you feel like you're in another word but you are really not   How Does It Work?  Virtual reality is a computer generated 3D graphics that simulates a particular real life situation that a person can interact with. A hypothetical three-dimensional visual world created by a computer user wears special goggles and fiber optic gloves etc and can enter and move about in this world and interact with objects as if inside it.  How Is It Usefull? The Virtual Reality Headset is a fun way to sit back and relax in your dream world or either fight ninjas or zombies in the medieval times.

In the book Red Queen you meet a commoner girl named Mare Barrow, and in her world, people are separated by blood. Red or silver blood. Red blood is normal blood, and most people have it. But Silver Blood gives people magic! Mare, by circumstance, ends up working in the palace, and finds out she has a secret weapon of her own that could ruin 

the balance of power. The silvers hide her away, but they are the only ones that know she isn’t a long-lost silver princess, and then they engage her to a silver blooded prince and try to change her into what she isn’t. Mare enters the race of danger, trying to help the Red Guard with death right around the corner. But can she do this all alone?

The Leprechaun: How the Tradition got Started                                   By Brianna Gordon 

Happy St. Patrick's Day! Lots of green, Irish dancing, four-leaf-clovers, and leprechauns! Leprechauns are a very eminent symbol of not only St. Patrick’s Day, but of Irish traditions. We all know them as funny little people wearing green with beards and place pots of gold at the end of the rainbow. And if we catch one, they will give us three wishes if we set them free. But how much of this is what the Irish first thought? 

First of all, the origin of this beloved character is not well known. Most can be traced back to 8th century water spirits called “luchorpans” who merged with fairies and created the first leprechauns, but with a nasty habit: They were very fond of heavy drinking, and often raided cellars in order to get to the drink! Other research suggests that their name comes from the Irish term, “leath brogan” which actually means shoemaker! 

As often as it seems that leprechauns are associated with wealth and gold (with the rainbow thing),  the original folktales explain that they are not hoarders, but shoemakers! But people still want that gold, and the myth persists. In fact, that is an extremely popular one, even though science proves that rainbows aren’t arches, but circles. Leprechauns don’t really even spend their gold, they use them to trick humans into letting them go. 

 The leprechaun is not what was expected of them. Instead of fun-loving men who grow four-leaf-clovers, smoke pipes, and wear green, they are mischievous little tricksters who also happen to be shoemakers. But people still love them and still set leprechaun traps and still believe in them to this day.

Video Games… To Play Or Not?  By Grace Chen, Sophia Chen and Taryn Halley 

Guess what percentage of American kids play video games?  

More than 90%!  Researchers took 5,000 males, females, and children ages 13-18 and found

that kids who played violent video games were more rebellious and eager to take risks. Many say that videogames are mind deteriorating and can make you unhealthy and violent. But others say that videogames have unknown greatnesses.

A lot of people, especially parents, hate video games. But they have many reasons to hate them. First, too much exposure to video games can affect your sleep cycle. Not only do video games keep many people up late at night, they also ruin the quality of your sleep. Because video games are projected on screens, they are very bright and trick your mind to think it is day, making it harder to sleep. Also, they can make you stressed when you try beating a hard level. It may be harder for you to concentrate and can give you a greater risk of obesity.

But on the other hand, video games give you better motor skills, hand eye coordination and can enhance your creativity. Also people with dyslexia usually read better after playing video games because it is easier for them to move their eyes around the screen. This in turn makes it easier for them to read. So you tell us. Should video games be played or not?

GHOST STORY By Phoebe Shi and Cindy Yu  

  

          In an old abandoned cabin deep in the woods lived an old woman of which no one knew her name. No one really paid attention to her, unless to curse her or yell at her or call her a witch. When she passed by the small village beneath her cabin, children would chant: 

  

“BURN THE WITCH! BURN THE WITCH!” and the parents would pull their children away from her whilst whispering that they should stay away. 

One day while in town, she was run over by a wayward carriage. No one made any attempt to help her. It was like nothing was there. They wouldn’t even bury her for fear that she was cursed, so they dumped her in the river.  

One night, a fellow villager saw something peculiar in the woods by the old cabin. A shadowy mist looked out in the beyond. It bore a creepy smile and large red eyes. Suspicious, he continued deeper into the woods.  

As he approached, closer and closer he felt uneasy as the smile widened. Suddenly, the figure lashed out and the man ran, sprinting back to the town.  

As he approached the town, the figure appeared in front of him and the mist surrounded him. He couldn’t find any way out and he saw the large eerie grin looking straight at him. He tried to escape, but it seemed that no matter how fast he ran the figure was always around him. He tried to scream, but no sound escaped.  

The rest of the villagers didn’t see the mist, instead they saw the man running around screaming like he was going crazy.  

During the following week, the rest of the village saw the man as crazy, and they shunned him. The poor villager eventually died, and he was thrown in the river as well, as the village thought that he too was cursed.  

The next night, ...you determine the rest of the story!

GMOs: The Hidden Story By Manikantha Puram 

 Many companies have advertised that their product was “non-GMO”, but is that really 

better than GMOs? First of all, GMO stands for genetically modified organism, so a fruit genetically modified is just a GM fruit. If a food is being modified, why would anyone make it a negative modification? The truth is, they’re not. 

This century might be the revolution for gene editing, thanks to a new tool called CRISPR cas9 (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats are segments of prokaryotic DNA containing short, repetitive base sequences). It allows us to accurately remove and add bits of data whenever we need to. This may allow us to create medicines for malaria, cancer, and AIDS. Really just about anything. This sounds great, and it is, but requires gene editing. Why should gene editing in medicine be celebrated, and gene editing in food be frowned upon? 

People can modify food to give more crop, give more seeds, taste better, or even be more healthy, but would anyone make food be harmful? Some plants are edited to make a poison, but to only affect pests. This may sound bad, but it’s just like how humans love chocolate, and dogs can’t eat it without something awful happening. Humans will just be able to pee it out, but it will kill bugs, acting as a natural pesticide. 

What else can GM foods do? Americans have a reputation for over-indulging, and eating more potato chips than anything healthy. While potato chips are amazing, we need to do something about this. Maybe it is just how healthy food tastes. With gene editing, we can make broccoli taste like chocolate, or carrots taste like cheese.  

GM plants are also a solution to global warming. Humans release thousands of tons of carbon dioxide into the air, and we can’t slow it down. Since we just don’t want to stop, we can engineer plants to take in huge amounts of carbon dioxide, and with forests, we can reverse the damage we have done. 

As anyone can see, there is nothing wrong with GMOs, and really, there’s a win-win situation that we think is bad. We can become healthier, just by modifying what we eat.

The color of the sky is a gloomy blue, But the sun makes the day stay true.  The snow is like a blizzard falling asleep, Or taking a nice little walk across the street.  But at one point the wind took the sleeping snow from it’s dreams, To join its friends, as they take a walk by the streams.   Some of the snow is sleeping on the branches of a small, bare tree, Not even wanting to be set f r e e.  The slush on the ground is holding people’s shoe prints, As the snow in the air blows into the people’s faces, like cold white mints.  The snow is here to stay for a  w   h   i   l   e,
