IMCC Newsletter 23 Friday, 9 th August 2019 Feast of Saint Mary MacKillop 8 th August Yesterday, 8 th August, was the Feast Day of Australia’s first Saint, Mary MacKillop. Her life was an inspiration to many people, including Sr Irene McCormack. This Sunday, 11 th August, students and staff will attend the 9.00am Mass at St Andrew’s Parish Church to celebrate this special occasion. Our students will be actively involved in the Mass and provide a sausage sizzle for parishoners after Mass. All members of our College community are invited. Mary MacKillop’s parents migrated from Scotland and Mary was born in Victoria in 1842. She was the eldest of eight children. Mary started work at the age of 14 to support her family. At the age of 18 Mary moved to Penola in South Australia and commenced educating local children. Mary MacKillop, together with Rev Julian Tenison Woods, founded the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart, affectionately known as the ‘Josephites’ or ‘Brown Joey’s’. She was a teacher, and attracted many teachers to the order. In 1867 Mary became the first ordained Sister of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Sr Mary, with the help of many others, established schools in most Australian states, including St Joseph’s in Trayning where Sr Irene spent her childhood. Mary MacKillop’s life story and legacy is a model of faith, commitment, dedication, perseverance and longevity to live out her dreams and aspirations. School Climate Survey This term, the College will undertake a School Climate Survey. Staff, students and parents will be invited to answer an online survey aimed at gathering data regarding the College climate. This refers to the quality and character of school life, including the values and expectations that a school accepts and promotes, and therefore the environment that dictates whether the staff, students and parents feel safe, welcome and respected. In Week 5 (beginning Monday, 19 th August), parents will be sent a link via email which will invite you to participate in this survey which will remain open until Friday, 13 th September. It is hoped that all parents will value the opportunity to provide feedback to the College via this online web-based survey, which will cover a wide range of topics. The College can provide after-school computer and internet access for parents who wish to complete the survey, but do not have the necessary computer and internet access at home. Please contact Mr Matthew Byrne, Assistant Deputy Principal Year 9 at the College, to make suitable arrangements if you need assistance in that regard. All students will also complete the student version of the survey whilst at school. Parish Weekend Mass Times Clarkson Parish St Andrew’s Catholic Church Parish Priest. Fr. Feast of the Assumption - Thursday 15th August This coming Thursday, at 11.00am in the Paul Rafter Centre, our College community will gather to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption. All parents are welcome to join us. The Feast of the Assumption celebrates our Christian belief that God assumed Mary, the Mother of Jesus into heaven, body and soul. This means she is fully with her son in heaven. This belief has been celebrated by the Church since the 4th Century, however in 1950 Pope Pius XII ruled that this widely held and celebrated belief was to become official doctrine of the Church. This belief places Mary with God, in heaven, but also affirms her place as our Mother, with us spiritually and able to intercede on our behalf to her Son, Jesus Christ. Hence when we pray to Mary, we honour her response to God and her special place in the Church.

Fair Game Australia

Fair Game Australia is a not-for-profit organisation that utilises recycled equipment and educates on the safe and effective use of these items, while inspiring participants to be active through different forms of activity.

Through the provision of recycled sporting equipment, fitness and education, Fair Game aim to reduce the risk of lifestyle-related disease, build social cohesion and improve mental well-being.

This program recycles sports equipment and clothing from individuals, schools and organisations and donates them to under-serviced communities, including remote Indigenous Communities such as Billiluna and Jigalong, as well as delivers a range of he alth education sessions.

Over the last semester, Year 7 Dunlea students helped facilitate the donations of sporting equipment from staff and students at the College. The Year 7 students were asked to speak to their Care Groups to encourage donations, display posters, keep a log of all donations and encourage students to write special messages on the equipment they donated.

Staff and students at the College donated 184 items which is an amazing achievement. Fair Game was extremely grateful and touched by all the special messages on the equipment donated. A big thank you to all who donated and the Year 7 Dunlea students who facilitated the donations.

Mr Jeremy Carbone Religious Education Teacher

Year 10 Commerce and Law: Just Start IT Gala Final On Monday evening, 5th August, two amazing teams pitched their concepts at the Just Start IT Gala Final held at Penrhos College. Consignment Collective: Samuel Archibald, Dylan Clements and Jayden Hill. Swift: Ben Baxter, Harrison Hewling, Lado Laki Wani, Ben Uncanin and Dan Wessling.

Consignment Collective pitched their amazing idea of a consignment store which authenticates genuine goods. Swift pitched their fabulous concept of an Uber for hair and makeup. Numerous attendees complimented their brilliant performance to a panel of judges and roomful of guests. Although they were not the overall JSI Final winners, these students were unbelievably good and in my biased opinion, were the best. Mrs Mery Jones History and Social Sciences Teacher

Japanese Exchange Students

A group of 17 Japanese high school exchange students from Fukuoka City in Southern Japan, visited Perth from 24th July-1st August, many of whom stayed with our students and their families. While visiting the College for three days, the Japanese students attended several classes, as well as visiting Yanchep National Park with our Year 9 Japanese course students. My Homestay Experience (by Merryn Temple, Year 9) Having a Japanese student stay with me for a week was a wonderful experience. My students’ name was Momoka, and she is from Fukuoka, Japan. Together we experienced and learned about each other’s cultures, and practised speaking both languages. We took her to a few popular places in Perth, like the Aquarium, Fremantle Markets and Hillary’s Boat Harbour. We also did a few favourite things of mine, going to the beach with friends (Lexie and her student, Sakino), taking my dogs to the park, and ice-cream at Baskin Robbins.

Momoka and I quickly became good friends, and got along well with each other’s friends. She came to a few of my classes and was exposed to some new experiences, like playing musical instruments. We spent most nights watching movies in English (some she had seen before, some she hadn’t), playing board games, doing jigsaw puzzles and planning for us to see Tokyo together. It really was a brilliant learning experience for my whole family and I would definitely do it again. Excursion to Yanchep National Park (by Lisa Carosin, Year 9) On Tuesday, 30th July, our Year 9 Japanese class students spent the day with the Japanese students visiting Australia. The excursion took place at Yanchep National Park. Students were able to explore the preserved limestone caves 11 metres underground. The Japanese students also got to see the native animals such as koalas and kangaroos, and discover Aboriginal culture. All the students, especially the Japanese students, were amazed to see the animals in their natural environment and learn about the history, tools and dreamtime stories of the Noongar people of Western Australia. It was a valuable opportunity for our students to interact with the Japanese students, and put into practice the Japanese language we have learnt. Excursion to Yanchep National Park (by Shori Nagayoshi, Japanese Exchange Student) I went to Yanchep Park with the Australian students. I was able to see various animals and learn about the indigenous people in a fun way. It was very fun to interact with Australian students. Mr Maurice Bonarrigo Japanese Teacher

Catholic Performing Arts Festival Week 2 of the Festival saw our vocal students perform solo pieces at Zenith Music, Claremont, on Tuesday, 6th August. Students from Years 7-10 performed a variety of styles throughout the day to an enthusiastic audience. It can be extremely difficult to perform a solo piece, so we applaud all students who had the courage to perform and to do it well. The Years 8, 10 and 12 Rock Bands performed on Tuesday evening at Prendiville Catholic College. The three bands showed a great amount of energy and talent. The audience was very well entertained. This week we received notification that our Guitar Ensemble, who made their debut at the Festival last week, received a Certificate of Merit for their performance. Congratulations and well done to all ensemble members.

Year 11 & 12 Food Safari On Wednesday, 7th August, the Year 11 Hospitality Class and the Year 12 Food Science class went on a “Food Safari” throughout the Perth CBD. Students were sent to nine various ‘on-trend’ cafés around the city to try a menu item. At each location, students were asked to complete a task and take a photo of their food or drink which captured the uniqueness of the café. The purpose of the excursion was for our students to gain real-life experience as a customer in various hospitality settings.
