On behalf of the board and the Dance Base staff, I am very proud to welcomeyou to the 2018 programme of dance and physical theatre at Dance Base, curated by Artistic Director, Morag Deyes MBE, assisted by Festival ProducerHelen McIntosh.
This year’s programme is bold and varied. 11 countries are represented, across24 shows, including work from Belgium, South Africa, Australia, Switzerland,Finland, Hong Kong, Ireland and Taiwan. 2018’s programme also sees a hugepresence of outstanding Scottish work, including five shows from the Madein Scotland showcase (p7, p11, p17, p19 & p34), and a double bill of blacklycomic work from two of Scotland’s most exciting young dance artists (p15).
We have a few returning heroes this year – Njobo Productions (fka After Freedom) had one of the huge hits of the Fringe in 2016 and they’re back thisyear with a spectacular representation of life in Soweto (p13), and Old KentRoad made a huge impression at Dance Base in 2017, so we’re delighted towelcome them back with OSCiLLATE (p39). Andy Howitt of HowittMoves isback in Scotland after a slightly longer absence, but his piece about LGBT iconLeigh Bowery (p43) is going to make for a triumphant return. We also enter the fifth year of our partnership with Taiwan Season and we’re delighted towelcome two outstanding Taiwanese shows (p21 & p25).
And far from relying on the familiar, Morag has programmed some of the most breathtaking, cutting-edge contemporary dance and physical theatre tobe seen anywhere – cover star Ima Iduozee (p27), Hong Kong’s Joseph LeeWai-Nang (p37), Belgium’s Leslie Mannès (p41) and Switzerland’s Pink MamaTheatre (p29) are all taking movement to bold new places and redefining ourrelationship with performance.
It’s a programme that demands to be seen and we think it further cements our status as the Home of Dance on the Fringe. Come and see us in Augustand make yourself at home.
Ed Crozier, Chair of the Dance Base Board
Welcome from the Chairof the Dance Base

Our 2018 programme is dedicated to Anna Krzystek, an artistof great originality and a person greatly missed by many. Anna appeared at Dance Base in our very early days, before we arrived here at our venue in the Grassmarket, when we took on the monster that is the Fringe. We were so proud to show her astonishing work and will never forget howshe and her artistry changed the landscape of dance in Scotland forever.
Years later, here we are in our own space and with a programme that's more varied than possibly any we have offered you over the years. We have the firstfull-length, full-scale ballet ever presented at Dance Base, the beautiful Gothic romantic tale of Giselle (p31); we have truly fabulous tap from returning favouritesOld Kent Road (p39); we have traditional and modern South African dance directfrom Soweto (p13); we have flamenco music and dance with the amazing El Petetestriding boldly to our stage in Flamenco: Up Close (p47); and Indian classicaldance experiences a game changer when it's mashed up Cockney style (p45).
On top of all that, we have vast flavours of contemporary dance from Scotlandand across the globe... and because 2018 is The Year of Young People, we’ll havelots of youthful energy in the house as we invite some of Scotland’s most talentedyoung dancers to perform in our youth dance showcase (p23). And we’re alsocatering to the really little ones, with two Made in Scotland-supported familyshows (p7 & p11). You don't need to be accompanied by a child of course, just be up for enjoying the pleasure of seeing the world through a child's eyes again.
And none of this hand-picked programming and planning makes any sense without YOU!
I look forward to welcoming you to our international dance party.
Morag Deyes MBE, Artistic Director

Liz Roche’s WRoNGHEADED merges film, voice and movement to confront therealities of women's rights and freedomof choice in Ireland.
The fierce spoken words of Galway poetElaine Feeney drive the piece, with electrifying performances by SarahCerneaux and Justine Cooper interwovenwith the exquisite work of film makerMary Wycherley, composer Ray Harmanand lighting designer Stephen Dodd.
All elements are gathered together to create an intense forum for emotionand physicality but ultimately, WRoNGHEADED is a refuge from the debate and an expression of hope asIreland enters brave new territory afterits historic landslide vote to change itsconstitution and allow women the possibility of choice.
First performed at Dublin Fringe Festival.

The internationally-renowned visualtheatre artist returns with a dark, comedic, highly physical production, incorporating illusions and masterful,non-verbal storytelling.
Joe Kilter has his own daily ritual –some even call it obsessive. But then a sudden change in his routine turnshis world askew: Joe Kilter goes Off-Kilter. Feeling increasinglyisolated, his life feels impossible, until he is forced to exist in darkness.
Off-Kilter explores mental wellbeing, identity, feeling a little bit different from everyone else, and not quite being yourself.

Three of Australia’s finest dancers – Lina Limosani, Tara Jade Samaya andKialea-Nadine Williams – come togetheras the Three Fates of Greek Mythology inThe Spinners, a compelling and dynamicnew work of dance theatre.
Directed by acclaimed Scottish physicaltheatre artist Al Seed and devised withAustralian choreographer Lina Limosani, this international collaboration is an exhilarating journey into myth andimagination.
As the Fates spin, measure and cut thethread of life, this emotionally charged and visually stunning dance theatre performance questions life, death, and our perceptions of choice.
Through stunning imagery this workis a fiercely dynamic piece, delivered withrelentless intensity and athleticism.

Tjimur, Taiwan’s premier indigenous dance-theatre company, returns to DanceBase with an open-hearted, full-bodied performance in which private feelings arealways on the verge of being made public. Both physically and emotionally charged,Tjimur’s dynamic work promises a bountyof intoxicating, artfully expressed sensations.
Working closely with the company’s founding artistic director Ljuzem Madiljin, choreographer (and sibling) Baru Madiljinand three fiercely dedicated dancers offerrare insights into ancient Paiwan culturaltraditions but brought bang up to date.
They know that every human heart holds profound secrets which can be acknowledged without having to be directlyshared. Varhung embraces and shapesunique personal and tribal impulses in waysthat have distinctly universal appeal.

A deconstruction of the conventions ofbreakdance and contemporary movement, as a tender, beautiful contemplation of theartist’s own history with his body.
On a blindingly white dance floor, This is the Title unfolds with fluid elegance. The peformer emerges in a space that radiatesvery delicately around him, reviving our thirstfor light, calm, and freedom. Alluring lightingand sound design complete the minimalistworld, where the power and grace of theperformer captivates our senses and ourimagination.
At the very beginning of his choreographiccareer, Ima Iduozee dedicated most of histime to movement research. This hands-onpractice unfolded as his debut work This isthe Title premiered in 2012, and it went on to garner acclaim from both critics and audiences. The work has toured in 14 countries across Europe, North America andAsia and this is its debut on the EdinburghFestival Fringe.

Who controls the world today; the colonialist or the colonised?
In this fierce, topical production, PinkMama Theatre question what colonialismmeans today and to what extent it continues to shape our post-colonialworld and its inhabitants.
Our four heroes are Vicky (a British feminist), Carmen (a Venezuelan transgender woman), Theresa (a lostmissionary), and Billy (a young, traumatised American soldier).
All four of them meet in an unknownlocation. Human kind has vanishedfrom the surface of the Earth. As theleader of a young utopian nation appears, the four characters areinvited to join her, under one rule: “Either dance, or die."

The first full-scale, full-length balletever performed at Dance Base, presented by the National Ballet of Ireland.
Giselle is a haunting story of love andbetrayal. Ballet Ireland’s modernre-telling of this romantic classic is atimeless tale about the redemptivepower of love. Betrayed by Albrecht,Giselle dies of a broken heart but herspirit returns to forgive her now repenting lover and protect him fromdeath at the hands of the vengeful Wilis.
Choreographed by Ludovic Ondiviela, former Royal Ballet dancer and choreographer, Ballet Ireland's Giselleis a story of love transcending deaththat will capture the hearts and mindsof audiences today.

Presented in the Made in ScotlandShowcase at Edinburgh City Chambers, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and performed by anexceptional ensemble of femaledancers and musicians, includingStephanie McMann, Laura Dannequin, Helka Kaski, Kirsty Arnoldand Angharad Davies.
Brocade is a poetic response to historical and contemporary notionsof craft and physical work. Movement and sound are propelledalong a catwalk and sonic texturesresonate with the presence ofwomen forging alliances. Somewherebetween a procession and a concert, this meditative performance has the precision, strength and delicacy of an intricate piece of lace.

Do you understand contemporarydance? Does it matter if you don’t?
Folding Echoes is a solo dance piece, originating from audiences’ urge to understand a contemporary dance performance across cultures. This workcreates a unique theatre experience to reconstruct audiences' perception of the theatrical space as well as contemporary dance. It explores theline between performing and beingbut most importantly it opens up thespace for the audience to explore theirconnection to themselves by creatinganother layer of awareness and understanding in their viewing experience.
It’s dancing. It’s a solo. But it’s muchmore than that.

Old Kent Road return to Dance Base, following the huge success of their 2017Fringe hit Fall Out. This groundbreakingnew tap show is heavily influenced byoriginal electronic dance music and itscoordination between light and sound.OSCiLLATE reveals an eclectic group ofindividuals who display a range of humaninteractions and relationships throughmovement and sound.
The concept of the show centres on the struggle to communicate and theways we can be misunderstood by eachother and by those around us. Breakingoff into group pieces, the dancers articulate the transitions between lack of communication, confusion, and misunderstanding, and move toward understanding, compassion and equality.

A monochrome red figure in the centreof the space. Projectors are directed towards this figure. The light revealsher, draws her, burns her. The soundfills her body and the space. It sets herin motion, repetitively and martially. This sound implacably brings her to exhaustion, trance and incandescence.
ATOMIC 3001 is a futuristic ritual inwhich she is subjected to a perpetual, unyielding pulse – held in place, heldin physical alienation. In this infernaldance machine, there is a communionbut also an unbridled rhythm to follow.
Starting from tribal dancing and its contemporary analogue, techno,ATOMIC 3001 is a quest toward ourprimitive drive for survival.
Can she hope for liberation?
