His work is concerned with the broadest and deepest sense of the concept of landscape; as a space which stretches endlessly before us, pre-senting the possibility to accept it either as an ex-panse of raw uninterrupted reality, or to idealize, embellish, and edit it as we see fit. Shane grew up in the desert Southwest, ringed by a horizon interrupted occasionally by sand-stone outcroppings. As a child he was visually taken by this sculpted topography, amazed when his father told him that the layered strata of rock had been fashioned by years of water and wind. His first creative interventions into this environ-ment were crude: “I pulverized sandstone blocks with a hammer, dug into cliff faces to excavate minerals, and dredged sand with magnets for iron dust that I cured into patties of iron oxide inside my father’s tobacco tins.” The physical sense of land and material has continued to guide his work, both as a symbol of process and as a source of content. He remain in-terested in how the incremental effects of time can create something more structured and unique than he might ever make with my own hands. Shane’s work merges this accidental language withwith a the more traditional language of painting and by contrast questions what looks like nature, what symbolize nature, and what is nature. The form in his work is often analogous to the methods of its creation. Their structures emerge from the physical properties inherent within specif-ic, mundane materials such as Elmer’s glue, cor-rection fluid, ballpoint pen ink and plastic resin, whose limits are stretched by subjecting them to non-traditional applications. These applications generate complexity that belies the simplicity of their creation, and in the process unearth funda-mental questions about what is natural and what is artificial.

.

Shane McAdams splits his time between studios in Cedarburg, Wisconsin and Brooklyn, New York. He is currently a contributor to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and a curato-rial advisor at the Thelma Sadoff Center for the Arts in Wisconsin. His paintings have been exhib-ited at Allegra LaViola Gallery, Marlborough, Chelsea, Elizabeth Leach Gallery, Storefront, Bush-wick, Scream London, among others, and has been reviewed in the Vogue Magazine, The New York Times, The New York Observer and The Village Voice. He has taught at the Rhode Island School of Design and Marian University. His recent work has been featured in the exhibitions Super Natural at the Kohler Art Center, in Sheboygan, WI, Beat a Path, at the James Watrous Gallery in Madison, WI, and in Fault Lines at GP Presents in New York City.

II am interested in making forms that stem from one simple object. The object is often times derived from household items which I break down and repurpose to my liking. Decomposing these objects alter the memory of any event that included them while still maintaining their one essence. This simple ‘essence’ is repeated to give way to new forms and different memories.

Ferguson, Jen Suite 4-F-1jenferguson.com

JenJen Ferguson is an oil painter whose primary subject is our collective relationship with place. Her work both celebrates and deconstructs man-made architecture and the natural world, mixing their familiar visual aspects with an emotionally interpretive and charged affect. Her paintings typically feature familiar architectural landmarks and culturally known places transformed into ephemeral visions. Her approach draws on traditional painting techniques, heavily painted layers, dripping effects and luminous surfaces. The result of her technique is an unpredictable hybrid that results from the mixture of conscious intent, sub-consciousness, and imagination. Ms. Ferguson is a Brooklyn based artist originally from upstate New York. She received degrees from Bard College and Pratt Institute; she also studied at the New York Academy of Art and Art Students League. She has shown both locally and nationally and her architectural paintings have been included in “Art of the Brooklyn Bridge: A Visual History” (Routledge,) NY Living Magazine, and Brooklyn City Hall. Her work is in the collection of New York University, The Thompson LES Hotel and Blue Ribbon Restau-rants in NYC.

Fletcher, Matthew Suite 1-Q fletcher.nyc

I am an artist living and working in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.II don't make paintings of plaid, or of stripes, or of spots; I paint plaid, stripes and spots. That distinction may seem inconsequential or silly, but for me, a painting should be essentially an object in and of itself, and not a representation of another thing. A painting is not a photograph or a story, but a physical thing to be approached and engaged on its own real qualities: color, line, shape, texture.II paint patterns as I find they simplify this refinement of a work to its tangible, physical qualities. No part of the work is inherently more important than any other. Even the sides of the paintings are given the same treatment as the forward-facing surface. But I mostly find the patterns fun to look at.

Gurrola, Elias Suite 4-E-3 eliasgurrola.nyc

MenswearMenswear designer Elias Gurrola was born and raised in Miami, Florida, where he gained an early inter-est in the arts. Being the son of a farmer, Elias spent much of his time in open agricultural fields where he was often influenced by nature. Studies at Central St. Martins in London and Parsons the New School for Design in New York exposed him to many opportunities and amazing experiences. In Spring 2013, he created a line of custom garments for Henri Bendel’s national campaign featuring that season’s accesso-ry collection. That summer, he was flown out to Beijing to compete in Izzue X Tsinghua’s First Annual Fashion Design Award. Then in Fall 2013, he won the “Technology Award” from Louis Vuitton for his team's dance costumes in a performance during New York Fashion Week. After graduating from Parsons in 2014, Elias was asked to show his thesis collection at Pacific Fashion Week in Vladivostok, Russia, where he was also interviewed and featured in Russian publications. He has since been working on his menswear line that he launched in New York for Fashion Week F/W 2015.

Heck, Ed Suite 3-Nedheck.com

The World Of Ed Heck. Fresh. Bold. Engaging. These words often come to mind upon viewing the work of Ed HECK. One is immediately disarmed by the naïve charm of these brightly colored works on canvas. While Ed HECK’s hand is painting a singular world; wild with the most vibrant and individual style; his eye is carefully ob-serving the people and the world around him. A native New Yorker, HECK’s career is as paradoxical as the uni-verse hepaints. A graduate of the School of Visual Arts, he went on to work at the American Museum of Natural Histo-ry.His detailed drawings can be found throughout the museum’s fossil halls. Although these carefully consid-ered renderings might at first seem at odds with the unique universe of his imagination, they in act represent two sides of the same coin. While Ed HECK’s works on paper and canvas have lost all the excess baggage of detail, they are distilled into an essence that can only be the result of the most focused of study. His enigmatic canvases were first exhibited in New York City in 1999 and were an instant hit. Interest and demand continue to grow and HECK’s work can now be found in galleries around the world. Unique style and mass appeal have forged his reputation as one of the leading pop artists of our time. The lively scribbles of Ed HECK’s artwork can barely stay still on the canvas; in fact they haven’t. Ed has written and illustrated numerous children’s books in-cluding Monkey Lost, Big Fish, Little Fish and his own line of board books from Penguin Publishing titled: ED HECK Just Board. His images have been licensed on apparel, home furnishings, dog toys, and a line of Ed HECK luggage and travel accessories. Welcome to THE WORLD OF ED HECK! Bold Lines. Vibrant Colors. Powerful Shapes. The results are umistakably HECK, and they add up to much more than the sum of their parts. Rarely has an artist said so much with such an economy of brush strokes.

Maria, Alessandra Suite B-5-B alessandramaria.com

“Though she graduated from Pratt Institute only in 2012, rising artist Alessandra Maria is alreadymaking waves with her delicate, mixed-media artworks.” - Hi Fructose Magazine“Alessandra's beautifully eerie illustrations appear to be illuminated by the night sky.Her subject's glowing eyes make us wonder who exactly they are.” -Juxtapoz MagazineIconography can tell a story. Believing it’s subtle power shapes us, Alessandra Maria's work is an attempt to create a modern feminist idol, to redefine feminine divinity and to combat objectification and dehuman-ization. Her work reimagines traditional depictions of female divinity. Throughout history, and particularly within the Abrahamic religions, feminine power has been embodied in three forms with few exceptions: the virgin, the whore, and the mother. Put another way, women's highest expression of virtue was defined in-sofar as their being a vessel for someone else child. The echoes of these restrictive archetypes inspire her to create icons whose power transcends that of a woman's physical vessel, who’s sexuality evokes strength, stalwartness, and edge regardless of sexuali-ty. Alessandra Maria works and resides in Brooklyn, New York.

Martin, Jean-Marie Suite 3-Ejeanmariemartin.com

II used to make very intricate and precise paintings, using neon with repeated words such as Nothing, Nothing, Nothing; Etc., Etc., Etc.; and Blah, Blah, Blah. I have for the last few years been making paint-ings that appear to be empty, with no color and seemingly no meaning to them. The fact that the work has become bare does not in any way mean that the paintings are easier to understand - au contraire mes amis (es) viewers. My recent work has in fact become harder for the viewer and asks more of him or her...not to brush by too quickly or think it is derivative. It is individual, intricate, idiosyncratic, subtle, personalpersonal and singular once you have entered, analyzed and taken it in. Not only to be seen in print, but more meaningful to see them in person, as you can at our Open Studio on October 1st. I will be there, only because I made them - I do not own their meaning, or the pleasure you may derive from experienc-ing them, or the interpretation of them. It is for you to discover. Come and have a fun day with my paint-ings and creations….

Nelson, Keith Suite 4-A-1keithcnelson.com

I am producing three-dimensional collages that are rigorously considered aesthetic expressions that expand the language and boundaries of painting. In a subtle critique of consumption and commoditiza-tion, the material for the work is reclaimed waste acquired in my daily routine of preparatory work and studio practice. Materials are used literally, some exactly as found, some manipulated and refined as pure surface. Many individual objects are collected and produced before being methodically paired off or combined into larger groups. These groups are not permanent arrangements; objects are intended toto be used in any number of configurations. The use of common and familiar material allows the work to transcend its formal underpinning.

Walsh, Shane Suite 4-A-1shanewalshpaintings.com

Shane Walsh’s paintings are the result of his research and involvement with collage, both in a literal sense and as a form of thinking.HeHe begins by making small-scale collages constructed from photocopied images of shapes and marks made in response to the history of abstract painting, some are expressive, others graphic or digital. Using the collage as a source he then translates these into large-scale paintings. This approach allows him to treat the history of abstraction as a storehouse of moments to copy, paste, and sample from. This cutting, copying and pasting owes as much to punk and hip-hop show posters from his youth as it does to mod-ernist collage traditions. The photocopy also serves as an important metaphor in his work. As images are reproduced over and over they become altered and their visual qualities degraded. The photocopying process echoes how he thinks about abstraction in the way that our understanding of abstract painting becomes altered as it gets transmitted and reproduced through time and culture. Akin to the children’s game “telephone”, where the original message often emerges drastically altered and distorted by the time it arrives at the last partici-pant. Walsh sees these distortions as something to celebrate and these paintings are his opportunity to re-construct an image of abstraction that feels appropriate to his time and place.re-construct an image of abstraction that feels appropriate to his time and place.
