YOUR ANNUAL WORLD DENTAL CONGRESS NEWSPAPER Thursday & Friday, 24–25 September
FDI Worldental Daily
Yesterday, the FDI World Dental Federation has released thesecond edition of its Oral
Health Atlas at the Annual WorldDental Congress (AWDC) in Bangkokin Thailand. The launch event for thebook took place on Wednesday at the Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Centre and was attendedby FDI members and officials, as wellas the media. The new edition of theatlas, titled The Challenge of Oral
Disease—A Call for Global Action, aims to serve as an advocacy re-source for all oral health care profes-sionals and recommends strategiesto address the global challenge oforal disease.
At the launch event, Dr Habib Benzian and Prof. David Williams, thepublication’s editors-in-chief, present -ed the new edition of the atlas and spoke with DTI editor-in-chief DanielZimmermann about the contents ofthe book and the global challenge of preventing oral disease and imple-menting adequate oral health careworldwide.
The first edition of the Oral HealthAtlas, titled Mapping a NeglectedGlobal Health Issue, was released atthe FDI 2009 AWDC in Singapore andhighlighted the extent of the problemof oral disease worldwide. The sec-ond edition of the atlas provides anupdate of the global health challengeand reflects on policies and strategiesthat address the burden of oral dis-ease, such as tooth decay, periodon-tal disease and oral cancer, Benzianpointed out.
The book summarises the key oralhealth issues based on the latestavailable information from various international sources, Benzian andWilliams explained, including the im-pact of oral disease, major risk factorsand inequalities in oral health, as wellas oral disease prevention and man-agement. Moreover, it aims to ensurethat oral health is granted higher
priority on the global health and development agendas. Written for national dental associations, healthorganisations, industry professionalsand the general public, the atlas pro-vides them with the means to addresspolicymakers, governments and localauthorities based on sound facts sothat they can better advocate forchange in oral health-related policies,Williams said.
According to the atlas, only abouttwo-thirds of the world’s population
have access to adequate oral healthcare, even though oral disease, particularly tooth decay, is among the most common human diseases. “Untreated tooth decay is the mostcommon health condition of childrenacross all countries, recently con-firmed by the Global Burden of Disease Study looking at the burdenof 281 diseases and conditions”, saidBenzian. “Children with severe un-treated tooth decay are impacted intheir growth, have frequent episodesof pain, miss days in school and havea generally lower quality of life,” hecontinued.
They also usually have the lowestaccess to oral health care and preven-tive services, added Williams. There-fore, the two editors-in-chief hopethat the second edition of the Oral
Health Atlas will most of all serve as anadvocacy tool for institutions, policy-makers and dental associations intheir effort to improve access to oralhealth care worldwide.
The compilation of the new edi-tion of the Oral Health Atlas was supported by the Hong Kong DentalAs sociation and the FDI’s Vision 2020oral health initiative. The book con-tent includes chapters and data from30 contributors, and was reviewedand edited by the two editors-in-chief.
The atlas can be downloaded freeof charge from the FDI website as oftoday and will be translated into theFDI’s official languages of French andSpanish. These versions will be avail-able electronically in early 2016.

While attendees of the An-nual World Dental Congress(AWDC) are much engaged
in learning about the latest trends and developments in dentistry here inBangkok, eyes are beginning to turn to
Europe, where the next AWDC is sched-uled to take place in the city of Poznanfrom 7 to 10 September 2016. It will bethe first conference in Europe after the2008 edition in Stockholm, Sweden, and the first to be held in Poland.
The responsibility for the organi-sation of the congress will be officiallypassed on from the Dental Associa-tion of Thailand to the Polish DentalSociety today at a lunch reception atthe Bangkok International Trade andExhibition Centre. Information aboutthe congress and the city of Poznan is available at the FDI pavilion at the front of Hall 103 or online atwww.fdi2016poznan.org.
“The decision to hold the 2016AWDC in Poznan demonstrates theFDI’s determination to ensure a goodworldwide balance, alternating in thelast decade between the Americas,Asia Pacific and Europe,” said out -going FDI President Dr Tin Chun Wong.“I congratulate the Polish Dental Society on their successful bid andlook forward to yet another must- attend FDI event.”
Speaking on behalf of the con-gress organising committee, Presidentof the Polish Dental Society Prof. Bartlomiej W. Loster said: “We feelhonoured and privileged to be chosenas the host country for the 2016 FDIAnnual World Dental Congress. Welook forward to welcoming delegatesfrom all over the world to Poznan, a city of history and style.”
The agreement between the FDIand local organising committee wassigned in May. The responsibility for organising the AWDC will be sharedbetween the FDI and a three-partnerlocal organising committee, whichcon sists of the Polish Dental Society;Exactus, a professional company spe-cialising in organising medical and den - tal congresses; and Poznan CongressCenter. The AWDC also has the ac tivesupport of the Polish Chamber of Phy -sicians and Dentists, which will play anactive role in preparing for the event.
“Exactus already organises theCentral European Dental Exhibition, featuring 250 exhibitors and 8,000square metres of exhibition booths, with some 13,000 visitors. The FDIAWDC in Poznań is a fantastic oppor-tunity to build on this solid base. Welook forward to working on a dentalevent of such worldwide importance,”said Exactus CEO Ewa Mastalerz.
Poland’s sustained economicgrowth over the last several years isreflected in a lively market for dentalequipment and services valued atnearly €2.2 billion in 2013. Demandfor dental services, both national andforeign, is growing rapidly, with theprivate dental sector estimated at€884 million and growing between 20 and 30 per cent year on year. The country has some 30,000 quali-fied dentists—nearly 80 per cent of whom are women—and an estimated23,000 dental practices.
Among other reasons, Poznan waschosen for the FDI AWDC because it of -fers a centrally situated congress centre,an extremely well-developed citywidetransport system, a large range of ex-cellent accommodation in the vi ci nityof the congress centre, and strong sup-port from the city authorities.

On 22 September, the FDIWorld Dental Federation in-vited dental professionals
to the World Oral Health Forum, held for the third time in the courseof the Annual World Dental Con-gress (AWDC). The forum aims tooffer a platform for the discussionof hot topics in the field of publicoral health. This year’s first sessionof the forum concentrated on the recently published World HealthOrganization’s (WHO) guideline onsugar intake for adults and chil-dren, which recommends a reduc-tion in daily intake of free sugars to less than five per cent of total energy intake.
The FDI introduced its World OralHealth Forum for the first time at the 2012 AWDC in Hong Kong andlaunched it at the AWDC in Istanbulin 2013. Since then, the objectivehas been to present top-level panel-lists who discuss current subjects in the field of oral health. This year,
the FDI has scheduled two ses-sions of the forum for the AWDC inBangkok. The first session focusedon the issue of sugar as a signifi-cant risk factor for dental caries andother non-communicable diseasesin light of the recently publishedWHO sugar guideline. It was moder-ated by Dr Harry-Sam Selikowitz,Vice-Chair of the FDI Science Com-mittee.
The panellists included DrChizuru Nishida from the Depart-ment of Nutrition for Health and Development at WHO. Dr Nishidaspoke about the development andthe main contents of the WHO sugarguideline.
Reducing free sugar intake toless than ten per cent of total dailyenergy intake was recommended bythe WHO study group for the firsttime in 1989 and was further elabo-rated by a joint expert consultationby WHO and the Food and Agri -culture Organization of the United Nations in 2002. This new updatedWHO guideline calls for further re-duction of free sugar intake to lessthan five per cent or roughly 25 grams(six teaspoons) per day, as this wouldprovide additional health benefitsaccording to WHO.
The second panellist, Dr PaulaMoynihan, Professor of Nutritionand Oral Health and Director of theCentre for Oral Health Research atNewcastle University in the UK, isalso Director of the university’sWHO Collaborating Centre for Nutri-tion and Oral Health. In her speech, she discussed the effect of free sugars on caries and elaborated onglobal policies and existing strate-gies to reduce the intake of free sugars.
Moynihan emphasised that it is extremely important to reducesugar intake in order to guaranteeadequate oral health, starting withraising awareness in children, butalso continuing this throughoutadult life. “We need to protect
dental health throughout the lifecourse,” she concluded in accor-dance with the updated WHO sugarguideline.
The third speaker of the forum,Modi Mwatsama, is a registered nutritionist and Director for GlobalHealth at the UK Health Forum, where she leads on non-communi-cable diseases and global healthpolicy. She presented data on theglobal production and consumptionof sugars, as well as the trends anddrivers, and gave some examples of concrete actions to reduce sugar intake. Mwatsama demonstratedthat the consumption and produc-tion of sugar are constantly increas-ing worldwide and that advocating a healthy and balanced diet is key to reducing the high intake of sugarsglobally.
In this regard, food advertise-ment plays an important role asMwatsama showed. There is a hugediscrepancy between the recom-mended and advertised diet. Ac-cording to Mwatsama, this can onlybe countered through a general rethinking of food marketing, for ex-ample by means of policy measures, such as taxes and marketing restric-tions, and cooperation of the foodindustry regarding labelling andproduct reformulation.
Finally, Dr Rob Beaglehole, Prin-cipal Dental Officer for the NelsonMarlborough District Health Boardin New Zealand and Tobacco ControlAdvisor to the New Zealand DentalAssociation, presented his experi-ences as a dentist with sugarydrinks, which play an important partin the too-high sugar consumptionby adults and especially children. A single can of sugar-sweetened sodacontains up to 40 grams (around tenteaspoons) of free sugars—nearlytwice as much as WHO recommendsin total per day. Beaglehole intro-duced several best practices fromNew Zealand, including efforts ofschools and hospitals to reduce in-take of free sugars by banning sug-ary drinks. Moreover, he pointed outthe negative consequences of sugarconsumption not only for dentalhealth but also for general healthand the link to obesity and diabetes.
“We aren’t giving children to-bacco and alcohol, but we are givingthem sugary drinks,” Beagleholesaid, emphasising the extent of theissue and the lack of awareness regarding it. The forum concludedwith an open discussion, duringwhich all participants were able topose questions and contribute tothe subject.
The second session of the 2015World Oral Health Forum is beingheld on Thursday at 9.30 a.m. and is titled “Universal health coverage(UHC): Towards optimal oral health”.It will highlight efforts made byemerging economies and low- tomiddle-income countries to achieveUHC and a roadmap to the inte -gration of oral health into UHCwithin the context of the post-2015development agenda.

I Worldental Daily: Dr Hescot, as thenew FDI President, what is the firstmessage you would like to sharewith dentists around the world?
Dr Patrick Hescot: The first point I would like to make is that FDI is a federation of dental associations. It was created by dentists and one of its principal aims is to work on theirbehalf and deliver their point of viewat international level, especially with -
in the United Nations and its agenciessuch as the World Health Organiza-tion (WHO).
It is also there to promote the in-terests of dentists and their respon -sibility for oral health when subjectsunder debate are likely to have a direct impact on dentists and theirability to carry out their work effec-tively.
What are the major differencesyou see in the practice of dentistry inthe last few years?
I think the main differences mustbe apparent to the thousands of peo-ple who have visited FDI internationalexhibitions over the years. The use of highly advanced, complex and ex -pensive technology in dental practicehas significantly increased. This allvery much to the benefit of the patient.
Indeed high-tech has become verymuch part of the patient’s expecta-tions. From that perspective, the den-tist is also called upon to become a super-technician, constantly updatinghis or her expertise in the light of newequipment. This naturally has majorimplications for continuing education, and opportunities from the AnnualWorld Dental Congress.
And what about the dentist’s rolein prevention?
Prevention has always been keyelement of the dentist’s work, a factthat was recognised in a messagefrom the WHO Director General Dr Margaret Chan in a message to the opening of the 2012 Annual WorldDental Congress in Hong Kong. Shesaid: “The dental profession is ahighly-respected member of the pub-lic health family. After all, dentistry pioneered the concept of preventivemedicine.” This is simple recognitionof what has been a clear philosophy of dentists from the early days of thefounding of FDI .
What is your perspective of therole of dentistry in the modernworld?
I think that it is important to stress that the dentist is not only a medical practitioner. He or she isalso a major contributor to society asa whole in terms of human wellbeing, confidence and quality of life.
One of the three key elements of the dentist’s contribution will continue to be prevention throughgood oral hygiene and regular dentalcheck-ups. In some countries, espe-cially those with lower income andlimited access to dentists, preventionand good oral hygiene are the only options.
The other two are maintenanceand restoration. Even with preven-tion, some patients are more likelythan others to require treatment andfollow-up due for example, to acci-dents, genetic pre-dispositions or tothe presence of other conditions im-pacting oral health.
Can you give a specific example? An example that has been raised in
the past few years is population age-ing and the implications of good oralhealth and hygiene in the later stagesof life. A good dentition throughoutlife allows people to continue enjoy-ing a good quality of life derived inpart from their ability to chew andswallow the food and maintain a goodlevel of nutrition.
In Japan, one of the world’s mostageing societies, the distinction ismade between years of life andhealthy years of life. A distinct featureof those healthy years is oral health. And those healthy years are alsoyears of independence. In recent lec-tures I have given on the subject ofageing and oral health, I have high-lighted efforts by dentists in France to encourage care facilities to de-velop oral health care strategies andaccess to care for their residents. It is well known that poor oral health is a key contributing factor to mal -nutrition among the elderly. The new‘Oral Health for an Ageing Population
Partnership’ is an exciting new devel-opment in this respect.
Do you think there is more aware-ness about the importance of oralhealth?
For high-income and some middle-income countries this might be trueowing to several factors that includemarketing and access to oral healthproducts and the impact of a poordentition on the individual in terms ofself-confidence and career opportu-nities. There are also special effortsby dentists at national level to raiseawareness through day, week ormonth-long oral health campaigns.World Oral Health Day, an FDI initia-tive, is fast becoming a key part ofworldwide efforts to deliver impor-tant messages about oral health tomembers of the general public.
You are beginning your two-yearterm as FDI president. What will beyour focus?
My primary focus will be tostrengthen and expand FDI advocacyat national, regional and interna-tional level. This means reinforcing its own resources for advocacy andproviding advocacy toolkits for itsmembers to support their interactionsat national level with public authori-ties and the general public. FDI is and will remain the voice of dentistsworldwide and a forum for consensuson the science, art and practice ofdentistry.
Thank you very much for the interview.
1 “The dentist is a healer; his business lieswith a very small portion of the humanframe, but that portion, though small, isstill human; it has its diseases and fail-ings, and the dentist has to cure these—bringing in, whenever possible, that bestof cures, prevention.” 1901, Sir MichaelFoster, Vice-Chancellor, University ofCambridge (UK). Opening of the FirstGeneral Meeting of FDI. Or “The chief and foremost function of thedentist is to care for the teeth, and just to the extent that he is able to do this successfully, to the same extent he will be able to prevent diseases of the con-tiguous parts, and to aid in preserving the health and vigour of the whole body.”Dr Willoughby Dayton Miller, FDI President1905–1907

The FDI General Assembly, theFederation’s supreme legisla-tive and governing body, has just
adopted four new Policy Statements. They are in the fields of ‘Dental Im-plants’, ‘Dietary Sugars and DentalCaries’ and ‘The Role of FDI in DentalEthics’. Updates to a further six PolicyStatements have also been approved.
The FDI General Assembly is partof the World Dental Parliament—themeetings of FDI Council, Committeesand Task Teams—which take placealongside the Annual World Den-tal Congress. This year’s sessionsbrought together some 400 repre-sentatives from around 90 mem-ber national dental associations in 72 countries.
Policy Statements are declara-tions laying out current FDI thinkingon various issues related to oralhealth, oral health policies and the dental profession. They are put together through consultation, dis-cussion and consensus of leadinginternational experts within variousFDI committees, national dental associations and other organiza-tions.
Many FDI Policy Statements arethe result of projects carried out by the FDI Science Committee andDental Practice Committee, othersare developed in collaboration withentities such as the World Health Organization. Of this year’s crop, theScience Committee and the DentalPractice Committee have developedof updated respectively five andfour.
The now updated Policy State-ments cover the related fields of‘Oral Health for Healthy Ageing’,‘Oral Health and Quality of Life’, and
‘Oral Cancer’. The remainder focuson ‘Basic Dental Training’, ‘Supervi-sion of Auxiliaries within the DentalTeam’ and ‘Dental Laboratory Tech-nicians’.
“We firmly believe that FDI PolicyStatements have a key role to playfor the dental profession world-wide, and it is crucial to put theseimportant statements into actionsfor optimal oral and general health,”
said Science Committee Chair Prof.Li-Jian Jin (Hong Kong SAR, China).“Our work this year has been par -ticularly relevant to raising theglobal awareness of oral health anddisease prevention for enhancingpeople’s quality of life and general wellbeing in an ageing popula-tion.”
“Our new Policy Statement on‘The Role of FDI in Dental Ethics’
implements a key element of the FDI mission ‘to advance and promotethe ethics, art, science and practiceof dentistry’,” said Dental PracticeCommittee Chair Dr Ward Van Dijk(Netherlands).
“Further, our revisions of PolicyStatements on the role, training andactivities of members of the dentalteam are a reminder of the need tocontinually review and update our
approach in the interests of best dental practice and the patient.”
Developing and disseminatingpolicies, standards and informationrelated to all aspects of oral healthcare around the world is one of FDI’skey goals.

I Adressing all problems a clinicianfaces when restoring a single toothin the posterior, Nobel Biocare is trying to bring innovation back tothe posterior region with its newcomplete posterior solution.Multiple Nobel Biocare nov-elties combine to make thissolution complete, but thefoundation for treatmentsuccess is the implant itself, the company said. Here Nobel Biocare offers severaloptions, each engineeredfor the specific demands ofthe posterior. A new variantoffers the benefits of theNobelActive family but withdimensions ideal for themolar region. The Nobel -Active WP (wide platform)implant possesses a wi-der diameter implant body (5.5 mm) to better fit the largeextraction sites in the molar regionand a wider implant platform for anoptimal emergence profile.
NobelActive WP also comes in anoption with a shorter body (7 mm) toavoid critical anatomical structuressuch as nerves.
Alternatively, clinicians can opt for NobelParallel Conical Connection(CC). Combining a parallel-walled im-plant body that is well documentedwith an advanced internal connec-
tion, this implant offers extraordinaryflexibility. It is engineered for use in all bone qualities and for a wide rangeof indications.
The 5.5 mm wide platform optionis designed for an optimised emer-gence profile for large molar sites.
Both new implants also benefitfrom Nobel Biocare’s internal conicalconnection. This advanced connec-tion’s conical seal and hexagonal in-terlocking mechanism provide high
mechanical strength. It offers restora-tive flexibility too, being compatiblewith Nobel Biocare’s most innova-tive restorative solutions, includingthose designed specifically for theposterior. These include the newPEEK Healing and PEEK TemporaryAbutments, which are anatomically
shaped to match the molar contours. As the PEEK Abutments come ready-shaped for an optimized emergenceprofile, fewer adjustments are need ed.This can simplify treatment and re-
duce costly chair time.
When it comes to the final restoration, the FCZ(full-contour zirconia) Im-plant Crown is designedfor strength and pre-dictability even under thehigh occlusal forces of the posterior. There’s noworrying about chippingeither, as the full-contournature of the NobelProceraFCZ Implant Crown re-moves the need for ve-neering.
The biocompatibilityof the materials used con-
tributes to biological stability in theareas it matters most. Plus, beingscrew retained, the FCZ ImplantCrown is completely cement free, avoiding the risks associated with cement excess entirely. Even the titanium adapter is mechanically retained.
The ability to use an angulatedscrew channel (ASC) allows thescrew access hole on the FCZ Im-plant Crown to be placed anywherebetween 0° and 25° in a 360° radius. This means it can be angled towardsthe front of the mouth for easy ac-cess, even in the posterior. It alsohelps avoid placing the access chan-nel on the cusp of a tooth, where itcould affect occlusion. The associ-ated Omnigrip Screwdriver furthersimplifies work on the restoration. Its effective pick-up function and se-cure grip on the screw help the clini-cian to work safely and efficiently.
Natural-looking tooth color isanother benefit offered by the FCZImplant Crown. Whichever of theeight available shades is used, the color is applied throughout the material. This means discolorationisn’t a concern when making adjust-ments. Cutbacks and staining canalso be used to achieve the desiredaesthetic effect.

I At the FDI Annual World DentalCongress, SOREDEX, a Finnish man-ufacturer of high-quality imagingproducts, is presenting easy-to-use solutions aimed at improvingpatient care and clinic efficiency. With its CRANEX 3Dx three-in-oneimaging system, SOREDEX is nowable to offer a 2-D or 3-D imaging so-lution for a wide variety of diagnos-tic tasks in the dento-maxillofacial,head and neck, and ENT regions.
3-D imaging is fast becoming indis-pensible in diagnostic work.
SOREDEX is showcasing its mostadvanced CRANEX extra-oral imagingdevice to date. The CRANEX 3Dx sys-tem combines panoramic and cepha -lo metric imaging with advanced CBCTimaging. It features five fields of view(from 5 ×5 cm to 13 ×15 cm) with a se-lection of resolutions, including high, standard and a low-dose programme
called Minidose. Minidose 3-D pro-grammes are recommended for radi-ation dose-sensitive cases, such aschildren, for implant planning, sinusimaging, and follow-up imaging, toname just a few applications.
In addition, CRANEX 3Dx providesa specific endodontic programme, ensuring accuracy and detailed diag-nostic information for challengingcases.
At Booth A286, SOREDEX is alsoexhibiting CRANEX Novus e, a 2-D digital panoramic unit with a new sectional panoramic programme. Moreover, congress attendees can viewthe MINRAY intra-oral radio gra phicunit and well-known DIGORA productfamily at the booth. Launched in 1994,DIGORA was the world’s first intra-oralimaging plate read-out system. DIGORA,which comes in two models, contin-ues to be the industry benchmark.
Dental imaging has never been asexciting as it is today, and 3-D imag-ing is rapidly changing the way clini-cians perform diagnosis and deter-mine subsequent treatment. More information about diagnostic imagingand optimising the imaging workflowcan be found at www.soredex.com.

I For decades, air compressor sys-tems by Dürr Dental have been re -nowned for their sturdiness, strong, durable performance and the high-est quality standards. Now the company has further improved itssuccessful Tornado compressors,as the one and two cylinder systemsare not only exemplarily quiet butalso highly energy-efficient.
The new Tornado 1 and Tornado 2units combine all the advantages oftheir predecessor models includingdental air of the highest quality, acompact form, excellent sturdinessand lasting value. An optional, pre-as-sembled, noise-reducing hood subtlyembodies the award-winning designof the Tornado. Together with an elab-orate air extraction solution it also
operates extremely quietly at an in-credible 54 dB, which is comparableto the noise level of a warm summerrain shower or a whispered con -versation. These attributes not onlysave clinicians a lot of time and anxiety, according to the company, the new Tornado models also worksubstantially more efficient thanearlier models while consuming 15 per cent less energy to deliver thesame performance.
Both units can be supplied with a membrane dryer, if required, foruninterrupted operation around the clock. The systems also providethe highest standards of hygiene, among other things, through ananti-bacterial inner coating of thepressure tanks. Owing to these features, Tornado compressors arepowerful and economic enough tosupply up to three treatment rooms, the company said.

I ACTEON presents itsnew X-Mind trium dentalpanoramic, which is upgrad-able to 3-D (CBCT) and/orcephalometry.
It has a full range of mediumFOV size for the realisation ofthe 2-D and 3-D examinations, which makes it the perfect toolfor implant surgery, endodontics,
orthodontics,p e r i o d o n t a l
treatment, as well as generaldentistry and ENT.
The combination of the small-est voxel size available on the market (75 μm) and the in-housedeveloped SHARP and STAR filtersis supposed to ease the use of thedevice and make diagnosis more
reliable. According ACTEON, X-Mindtrium has four FOV sizes ranging fromØ 40 x 40 mm to Ø 110 x 80 mm to limitthe exposure on the region of interest. The FOV are native and not stitched, the company said.
Owing to a patented mechanism, the secondary collimation does notneed to be on the cephalometric arm.The positioning of the patient on the
cephalometric module can thereforebe easier and faster. Furthermore, thearm can be shorter giving the X-Mindtrium one of the smallest footprintsfor a cephalometric product. Clini-cians can operate the device easy and intuitively with the ACTEON Imaging Suite (Windows and Mac OS X).Its open architecture makes it com -patible with most of the Patient Man agement Systems of the market.
The import/export of DICOM 3 and STL gives it full compatibility withCAD/CAM systems or external im-plant planning software.

I A leading provider of dental millingtechnologies, Roland DG Australiarecently announced the introduc-tion of its new wet milling dental machine. The DWX-4W and othernew developments in Roland dentalmilling technology will be on displayat key dental conferences world-wide, including FDI 2015, the com-pany announced.
The recent introduction of CAD/CAM software, CNC milling machinesand new restorative materials, has rev-olutionised the production of dentalprostheses, including crowns, copingsand bridges. One of the most popularrestorative materials is lithium disi -licate that is gaining support from dental clinics and patients for its supe-rior hardness and aesthetic qualities.
Roland DG developed the DWX-4Wmilling machine especially to meet thedemands of this growing market.
“By providing a device capable ofwet milling a wide variety of materialswith reliable precision, we plan tocomplement our existing portfolio ofconventional dry milling machinesthat already receive great supportfrom dental labs worldwide,” ex-plained Shane Adams, DistributionSales Manager at Roland DG.
According to Adams, Roland DGhas identified a market need that it intends to fill.
“In the current market we are fa-miliar with products that combine thefunctionality of dry milling and wetmilling into a single machine,” he con-tinues, “While these machines canprocess a variety of dental CAD/CAMmaterials, they require a cleaningprocess when switching between wetand dry milling. This includes the dis-posal of milling residue, then clean-ing the inside of the machine and drying out the processing area.”
Roland DG’s multiple device so -lution of either dry or wet milling can
handle the simultaneous processingof different materials without the in-convenience and delay of cleaning.
“Each machine specialises in ei-ther wet milling such as the DWX-4W
or dry milling such as the DWX-50 and the smaller DWX-4. Furthermore, having separate machines providesthe opportunity to add an additionalunit to meet production demands, with the ability to run four units off theone PC,” Adams said.
Visitors of the FDI Annual WorldDental Congress are invited to visitstand BD239 to see the new DWX-4Wand exciting new developments inRoland DG’s dental milling tech -nology.

I Ozone has become increasinglyimportant in dentistry in recentyears. It has been demonstrated to kill viruses, bacteria and fungiand to promote healing processesby activating the metabolism. Theozonised natural gum therapy ef -fectively supports the treatment of acute and chronic inflammationof the gums and, in contrast tochlorhexidine, causes no discol-oration. In addition to olive and castor oil, ozone is a main compo-nent of Hoffmann's PeriO3 Oil. Thishighly effective combination excelsthrough its excellent tolerability andis even recommended for the treat-ment of patients who are pregnantor breastfeeding.
Hormonal changes during preg-nancy affect the oral vessels, whichare then easier for bacteria to pen -etrate and lead to periodontal di -seases faster. According to Hoffmann,PeriO3 Oil is the solution for preg-
nant and breastfeeding women, par-ticularly owing to the oil not contain-ing any alcohol.
The highly reactive oxygen atomsin Hoffmann’s PeriO3 Oil purposefullyeliminate the pathogenic anaerobicbacteria and restore the healthy oral flora. The sensitive oral mucosa
and the taste buds are not irritatedtoo. The bactericidal and fungicidalproperties of ozonised oils have
been scientifically proven; whentreating periodontal disease, ozon -ised oil provides better results than a 0.2 % chlorhexidine solution. There are significant benefits when
it comes to dealing with staphylo -coccus aureus and porphyromonas gingivalis.
Hoffmann’s PeriO3 oil is appliedinto the inter dental spaces or the gingival pockets using a blunt can-nula. In order to enhance the effect, professional dental cleaning and cal-
culus removal or curettage shouldbe performed prior to treatment.Hoffmann’s PeriO3 Oil is also suit-able for the treatment of gingival in -juries, grinding traumas and woundsafter tooth extraction. Additionalmouthwashes are contraindicatedduring the application, the com-pany said.
“I particularly use Hoffmann’sPeriO3 Oil for patients with an in - clination to chronic gum in flam ma -tions, but also for those with simplegingivitis and for the treatment afterperiodontal treat ment as a support-ive measure,” explains dentist DrAndré Kaczmarek. “I have success-fully treated more than 5.000 caseswith this preparation in my dentalpractice since 1998.”

I With EQUIA, aesthetic bulk place-ment is now possible in posteriorrestorations, according to dentalmanufacturer GC. EQUIA is an ad-vanced restorative system that features a new generation of glassparticles (EQUIA Fil Capsules) and a highly-filled resin coating ma -terial (EQUIA Coat). This way, itcombines quick and easy handlingwith good physical properties andaesthetics.
As a biomimetic filling material,EQUIA enhances remineralisationby allowing diseased dental tis-
sues to heal through the release offluoride. Owing to the unique sec-ondary maturation effect attributedto saliva, it also provides increasedstrength for the glass ionomer overtime. A single layer of nano-filledEQUIA Coat not only protects therestoration against moisture con-tamination and acid erosion but alsoexponentially increases the phys icalproperties of the EQUIA filling, in-cluding wear resistance and fracturetoughness.
EQUIA is routinely used as part of treatment strategies for deeper
lesions, caries stabilisation andgeneral restorative care of highercaries risk patients, geriatric andpaediatric patients. Over the lastfive years, the clinical performanceof EQUIA has been highly ap -preciated by clinicians worldwide. Together with various ongoing clin-ical studies, EQUIA is proving itselfas a long lasting posterior resto -rative alternative for daily routinepractice (in the given indications).
