RBI notifies FDI in singlebrand retail

The Reserve Bank of India on January 13,2012 operationalised the changes in theForeign Direct Investment (FDI) policy byremoving restrictions on the foreigninvestment limit in single brand retail.

“...it has now been decided that FDI up to 100per cent would be permitted in single brandproduct trading under the government

route...'', the RBI said in a circular.

The Department of Industrial Policy andPromotion (DIPP) had earlier increasedthe limit of FDI in single brand retail from51 per cent to 100 per cent.

Removal of the investment cap is likely tohelp global fashion brands, especiallyfrom Italy and France, to strengthen theirinterest in the growing Indian market.

The government had said the move wasaimed at enhancing competitiveness of Indian enterprises.
