2. Fill in the Blanks (i)
[This Device] appealed at once to the eye and to the ear, thus naturally forming the habit of attention, which is so difficult to form by the study of books. Whenever the pupil will not fully understand [it] will have the opportunity of enlarging and making more intelligible.
3. Fill in the Blanks (ii)
[These instruments are] not uncommon, but are little resorted to by the teacher.
The teacher almost knows as little how to use [it] as his pupils.
What are they talking about?
4. Educator Quotes from the 1840s about the Chalkboard
5. Fill in the Blanks (iii)
... the existing system is utterly inefficient. The teacher ... may pour it in the ear, or extract it from the printed page ... but unless he teaches through the eye, no satisfactory instruction can be conveyed.
6. Sir David Brewer (1856) on the Magic Lantern
7. Fill in the Blanks (iv)
[It] is going to make school so attractive that a big army of swords and guns couldnt keep boys and girls out of it.
Mix [it] with education and youll have something that makes kids want to go to school.Youll have to blockemto keep em away.
8. Edison (1911) on Moving Pictures
9. Education Reform
Time, time, time! The system we invented, intended to educate well only the few, has to be overhauled, and the overhaul has to be done while kids and teachers are still there like trying to change all four tyres while the car is still running, and without a map, and with several backseat drivers making different suggestionsDeborah Meier
European Universities are in need of fundamental reforms.Centre for Economic Policy Research 2005
10. Sir Ken Robinson
Every education system in the world is being reformed at the moment. And it's not enough. Reform is no use anymore, because that's simply improving a broken model. What we need .... is not evolution, but a revolution in education. This has to be transformed into something else.
One of the real challenges is to innovate fundamentally in education. Innovation is hard because it means doing something that people don't find very easy for the most part. It means challenging what we take for granted, things that we think are obvious. The great problem for reform or transformation is the tyranny of common sense -- things that people think, "Well, it can't be done any other way because that's the way it's done."{We must disenthrall ourselves from some teaching traditions}

"Had I the heavens embroidered cloths, Enwrought with gold and silver light, The blue and the dim and the dark cloths of night and light and the half-light, I would spread the cloths under your feet; But I, being poor, have only my dreams; I have spread my dreams under your feet; Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.
