Dr.Gizmo sent in an article in which he gives ushis thoughts on an interesting development inFD- saildesign,we wonder what this is all about!

With theWC in New- Zealand coming up in Ja-nuary we wish all the compeditors all the bestand good sailing. Most of the European boats areon their long journey to Napier, we hope they

will arrive in good order and will be back in timefor the start of the 2009 season. At last: youwill receive an invitation (via your nat.secretary) for the WC2009 in Medemblik, Hol-land.We are already looking forward to meetinga lot of sailors and expect it to be a happy and suc-cesfull event. The organising committee of RYCHollandia is highly respected in the regatta world,so is he wonderful venue at the IJsselmeer: the In-ternational Regatta Centre Medemblik. TheNFDCO is expecting it to be a unforgettable ex-perience.

Around five years ago a newAustralian FD teamstarted sailing in some of theEuropean andWorldChampionships. It was the AUS-37, crewed byNormanRydge andRichard Scarr.Always a stea-dy candidate for the top places, this year againteam Rydge/Scarr did well, reaching a third pla-ce in Croatia. We decided to see where this suc-cessful helmsmanNormanRydge came from andwhat he had to say about the Flying Dutchman.

(by Casper Schaaf)

Norman, what does your pre-FD sailing careerlook like?I guess I started sailing when our family movedto an area in Sidney harbor, very close to a boat-yard. I was I think about six or seven years old andthe men who were working as shipwrights in theboatyard built me a little boat and I just startedsailing that boat around the bay. I can rememberI used to make the sails from our bed sheets andmy mother wasn’t very happy about that.

I can imagine.Yeah, it was very informal, just playing. Some ofthe other children that lived around the bay thatwe were in had little boats too and we used toswap boats and just play aroundwith those things.I lived in that house until I was about twelve ye-ars old and I always wanted to sail a boat thatwas only sailed at a small sailing club in that area, called a Northbridge Junior, very much like ahard scale Scow/Moth. But for some reason myfather wasn’t too keen that I should get into or-ganized racing, although we were just playingwith boats. Anyway, when I was about thirteenwemoved to another part of Sidney, closer to thesurf beaches. I didn’t do much sailing there, butgot involved with surfing.

Wind surfing? No, just wave surfing. I wasn’t very keen on windsurfing until I was about seventeen. After thatwe started to get involved in wind surfing as well.Anyway, I can remember from this period a friendof mine bought a Laser. That was when the La-ser was getting popular. There were lots of thosein Sidney. And I remember going out with thisLaser and thinking to myself, this is a really bad-ly designed boat; you can’t keep your bottom outof the water. But anyway, we got involved in La-ser racing and I started sailing my Laser, just li-ke when I was a little kid, around the little baywhere we lived. Generally beating other LaserI’d come across I thought I could go to the StateChampionship for Laser. I went there and hadabsolutely no idea why I was coming last.Well, you know, I’m now nineteen; hadn’t sailed sinceI was twelve years old and didn’t know competi-tive sailing as a teenager, just surfing. I thoughtI’d remember how to sail boats and I was always, every race, coming last. I had no idea why boatshad compasses on them. Anyway, that was myfirst racing experience in sailboats.

So you immediately started with these big races, oryou had some club races?Well, until I got there I thought I was pretty good. But when I came last in that State ChampionshipI realized there was more to it. I then did aboutten years of sailing Lasers, gradually getting bet-ter, to a stage where I came overseas and sailedLasers at Kiel Week. Got third in Kiel Week Ithink, one year.

To see things in perspective, what age are you now?I’ll be fifty this year. I think I was at Kiel at abouttwenty three years old; I did one big European tripin Lasers.Generally got in the first four or five inmost of the big regattas: the British Nationals and

so on.Anyway, when I came back I got involvedin sailing 505 and I sailed those for many years.

From the Eighties onwards?Yeah, from the mid-eighties actually. I think itwas about 1986. Because I sailed a Taser cham-pionship in Sidney harbor in 1985.

ATaser? Never heard of that. It’s a two-men boat, Sidney design. They hadwhat’s still the biggest regatta in Sidney harborwith 238 boats.

It’s a world wide class?No, it’s not.Mainly in NorthAmerica andAustra-lia.

That’s why I’ve never heard of it, probably. It’s notin Europe? No,other than England it’s not very popular the-re. Anyway, every Laser sailor in Sidney had aTaser. So we won that regatta and graduated tothe 505,which was the best dinghy going aroundin Sidney at the time. And then I started sailingFD’s because of a good friend ofmine,DougHar-ris, who people who’ve been in the FD class forsome time will know. He was the man who ma-de the Goldspar mast. He’s a very good friend ofmine and he had an FD.Once a year I’d jump inthe FlyingDutchman withDoug, because he ow-ned the boat but liked to crew it. I’d skipper theboat for Doug and we generally came in secondin the National championships, behind IanMcCrossin, who is another name people associ-ated with the class will know.

When was the first time you were in an FD?Well, the first big regatta that I can rememberwas an international regatta that we did in NewZealand, at a place called Taranga. I don’t re-member the year, but the class was then Olym-pic I remember: the competition was very stiff. IanMcCrossin might have been about the best ama-teur at that time and he would get in the twen-ties or thirties in this fleet. It was quite an eyeopener to go there. Of course, we didn’t do verywell at all. That was the first time I sailed FlyingDutchman. But my main pursuit around that ti-me was the 505. It wasn’t until maybe five or sixyears ago Dough decided that we needed a newboat – we were always sailing his old boat, it wasa bit of a tractor. He loved the boat, but it was veryrudimentary; it didn’t work verywell andwe didn’tmaintain it very well.

What brand of boat was it?It was a home-built one. So, Doug decided thatwe should build a new boat.We had some moldsby a boat builder calledHasselgrove. Our boat wasthe last one that he built, because Doug basical-ly sent this man mad during the construction.Dough designed the construction of the boat andI think it’s a very good boat; we still have it. It’s

the boat we use when the Mader is in a containersomewhere. It’s certainly a very strong boat, butcompletely different to the Mader. Which is thequicker boat, I don’t really know. Richard and Iprefer to sail theMader, because everything works. However, we built this boat I’d say in the last fewyears before the World Championships in Mel-bourne –maybe two years before that - but just af-ter building it Doug had a bit of a health problem. He had to have a heart operation. And that’s whenI rang Richard and asked if he would like to sailwith me, because Doug physically wasn’t able tosail.

That was 2002, 2003? Melbourne was 2003.Yeah, it would have been the year before that Ithink, because I think the intention was to buildthis boat to sail in that regatta. Richard and I sai-led that boat in Europe one year before that cham-pionship. That was when the EuropeanChampionship where at Lake Como.

Yes, that was in 2003.Yeah, that was when we constructed that boat. And ever sinceRichard and I have been sailing FDtogether. I suppose we keep sailing FDbecause wethink it’s the queen of dinghy classes.

You like the FD better than the 505?I do. I like the 505 as well. It’s a fantastic boat ona reach in fifteen knots in waves. The 505 is a verygood sea boat, just like the FlyingDutchman.Ho-wever, of the two I think the Flying Dutchmannow is my choice. FD’s are much nicer to sail inlighter breezes; they act like a little keel yacht, where a 505 is a bit too bobby. And I think what’simportant for – let’s say this regatta – they have alot more room to relax when there’s no wind.Be-tween races you can relaxmore in a FlyingDutch-man than you can in a 505.Seriously though, oneof the things that interest us in the FD class is thecontinual development.Having spent many yearsin Lasers, my approach to the 505 was – as mostLaser sailors generally know – that you can use

equal equipment and have big differences in speed. So, if you spend many years in Lasers you don’ttend to be equipment focused. You tend to belie-ve that the game has to bemade by positioning onthe course and just how you use the equipment. So,in 505’s I was never very interested in developingequipment. I’d just buy whatever everyone wasusing and go and try to practice with it and getbetter used to the equipment. One of the things I’menjoying in the FD at the moment is learning mo-re aboutmasts and sails and how theymight be im-proved. One of the reasons we’re here at thisregatta is we were hoping to trial a new mast andsail combination.

You have the CST mast now?Yes,we’re using the CSTmast fromAustralia andUllman sails. The reason we’re using these is,they’re not necessarily better than anything you canbuy in Europe, but we have control over the waythey’re constructed. You know, we tell CST whatwe want in the mast and they can build it.

It feels better that you’re in control of your ownstuff. That’s one of the things now that’s interestingmo-re in sailing. I think sailing is amarvelous sport, be-cause it comes to such a range of interests. One, it’sa lovely thing to do, just to get out on the water. But there’s also the tactics. Some people are mo-re interested in the technical side of sailing, somepeople in the development of speed, with the rigsand spars. And of course you have the physicalelement. I can remember the first time I was sai-ling dinghies: I never thought you’d have to be fitto sail one of those. But there’s even a physical si-de now to sailing. You asked me my age before –fifty – you know, I’m starting to have to try to stayfit, for windy regattas. Luckily, that wasn’t testedhere.

No, this had a different testing element to it. Butyou did well here in Croatia, you’re third overall.I guess it’s pleasing, result wise?

Yes and no.Result wise it’s pleasing.Quite frank-ly I don’t think a lot has changed in the peckingorder here in Europe. The Bojsen-Mollers are stillobviously the best, and Szabolcs and Andras. I’dsay the faster boats are going faster than they we-re the last time we saw them – say, in Lake Bala-ton or St Petersburg – and I think there’s been asmall increase in fleets. So, in this regatta, a thirdplace is nice, but it feels as though somebody ca-me out and dealt some cards and gave you a pla-ce. It’s been a difficult regatta for the racecommittee. I think they did a really good job; asgood a job as they could do.The weather has con-spired against them. But, even though the breezehas been wildly swinging, the better teams seem toget in front.Maybe theminor places could change. There’s one point between second, third, fourthand fifth: that’s a bit of a lottery. I couldn’t go homesaying we’re definitely third in this boat, becausewith Borowski (4th) and Bogumil (5th) you couldeasily change positions.Anyway, if you have a lookat the results, they’re pretty indicative of who’ssailing FD better than other people at the mo-ment.

And how are things in Australia, leading up to theWorlds in New Zealand? The situation inAustralia is, FD-wise, I think a bitlike Europe. The fleet is slowly graying. It’s a chal-lenge to get people involved in dinghy sailing, especially young people.Anyway, there’s a smalldedicated group of people who sail FD’s in Sidney, about ten boats. And, having come here and seenthe rest of the fleet, I’d say the Sidney fleet is ba-sically on the pace. There’s two or three boats inSidneywho are as quick as we are and IanMcCros-sin has come back on speed recently. As for theWorlds in Napier, I think there will be about 10Australian boats making the trip. Hopefully wecan fill two containers. So we’ll see what we areworth out there next January.

European Championship –Rabac 30 May – 7 June 2008

By Robin Matulja (CRO-51)

After 22 years, trust has been shown to Croatia, conceding to her theorganization of one of the most important sailing events, the OpenEuropean Championship for the queen of all the classes – the leg-endary Flying Dutchman. The honor passed to the Fly Sailing Club, who together with theLabin/Rabac Tourist Board and the City of Labin carried out an excel-lent work.During the seven days of racing the Rabac Harbour has beentransformed into a sailing center worth of all compliments. 85 boatsfrom 16 nations have sailed in the Kvarner Bay and gave a wonderfuland unique picture to everyone present. The Croatian representativeswere Tin and Robin Matulja from the host club.Although nine races in the Olympic triangle course were planned, because of the cyclone and the very variable weather conditions thatdominated Europe the whole week, only five have been sailed, butenough to acclaim the winners.Danish brothers Jorgen and Jacob Bojsen-Möller, after a not so goodstart on the first two days have dominated the event with three firstplaces and took home the title of Open European champions. The sec-ond place went to the Hungarians Szabolcs Majthenyi and AndrasDomokos, and the Australians Norman Rydge and Richard Scarr wentthird. In the junior <26 category the winners are the Italians Nicola

Vespasiani and Carlo Carincola. In the women category, the Europeanchampion is Dolores Sanchez Herrero from Spain. The championship was concluded by a prize giving ceremony with ova-tions. The speech of the FD class president dr. Alberto Barenghi wasfull of compliments and congratulations to the organizers and to thesailors, and it was closed with the announcement of the upcomingWorlds in NZL and the 2008 Vintage Yachting Games in Holland.

Kieler Woche, 21 – 24 June 2008

Text: Kai Schäfers (NED-11)Translation: Casper Schaaf

This year’s Kieler Woche had 25 boats at the start. Because of theEuropeans in Croatia a few weeks before it was quite difficult to get thenecessary entries for Kiel.On Saturday the races started punctually at 13:00 hours with a good 4Bf.A long course was to be sailed. The first day we managed to do threeraces and were therefore quite tired when we came on shore in theevening. Bojsen-Moller had underlined his world class with three victo-ries that day.The NED-32 with the van der Pol brothers was also in topform and was second in the results, followed by Hans Genthe and OlafBallerstein. In the first two races some teams were thrown back to thelower ranks because of an early start. The second day we started the fourth race with lighter wind, around 2to 3 Bf. In that race there was a little change of leadership after a nicetack to the left during the final beat by Kilian König, who managed tokeep his first position. Coming from the right, the DEN-21 secured aposition as second and the NED-11 as third. Then came the most sen-sational race of this Kieler Woche. The fifth race started. After the sec-ond round the wind fell away and the whole fleet got nicely mixed.Despite loud protests the race wasn’t cancelled. After 15 minutes a lightbreeze came from the left side of the course with which the first fiveboats managed to cross the finish line. The following boats had to waitanother 5 minutes to float into the area that had a little wind and after-wards reached the finish as well. During the time without wind someboats were given a 720° penalty by the otherwise laid-back jury, forunauthorized propulsion. And so, after the second day the DEN-21took the first place, the NED-32 the second and the NED-11 the third. On the third day there was no sailing because the wind was too strong. In some of the gusts wind strengths of over 8 Bf were measured. HansGenthe decided to use this wind to put on a little FD training programfor the audience, at 7-8 Bf with spinnaker.Amazing how fast an FN cango.Too bad that after an hour his genoa roller broke, as well as his mast. After a long repair session and a new mast the GER-33 was ready foraction the next day.

The fourth and last day saw some more exciting races! The weatherreport predicted a diminishing 3-4 Bf. Some teams looked forward to afew nice races on the last day and came to the racing area with lightwind sails. But hardly had they rounded the harbor corner and reachedopen water when a stiff breeze from 280 degrees greeted them with 4-5 Bf. Some crews had sailed out with sails for more wind, which theycould put to good use the first two races. Bojsen-Moller, among thoseto start with a light wind genoa, once more proved his sovereignty andwas able to win the first race with stand-in crew Holger Jess. The sec-ond race proved to be quite interesting because of a 20 degree windshift. The positions on the course were changed a number of times.Witha lighter breeze from a stable direction of 290 degrees the third racecould also commence at 13:00 hours. This allowed the desired seconddiscard for some of the teams who’d started too early the first day.Withthat the final result after 8 races stood as follows: 1st place DEN-21, 2nd

place NED-32 and 3rd place GER-33.

By Javier Higuera (ESP-9)

Ginés Romero and Alvaro Moreno (ESP-6 from CNAltea) again wonthe FD Spanish Nationals by completing ten of the twelve scheduledraces. The Championship was held at Altea’s Bay from 3rd to 6th July.OnThursday, the first of three races started at 15.00 and wind was drop-ping from B-4 to B-3/2. On Friday, the first race was won by Barenghi –Carp (ITA 7) with the wind shifting to South East. The second race wasdominated byMartinez – Guijarro and the third race, with 7 knots wind, was for sailors of EVLE. Having completed a total of six races, provi-sional classification was as follows: Francisco Martinez - VincenteGuijarro (RCNT-CNA) 14 points;Ginés Romero -Alvaro Moreno (CNAltea) 15 points; Echevarria- Garciamartín (EV La Escandalosa) 16points. Is more emotion possible?

On Saturday four races were disputed with a Southerly wind and astrenght of 10 to 12 knots: a beautiful (and hard) day of regatta sailing. The final day of the Championship gave no changes to the classificationdue to the absence of wind (never more than 4 knots). Thus, automati-cally, Ginés Romero and Alvaro Moreno retained the top position inthe overall result with three points of advantage to Francisco Martinezand Vincente Guijarro, and four points to the third in classification,Carlos Beltri and Juan Pablo Diego from Murcia. The awards ceremony was held early in the afternoon with the presenceof Ángel Roquero, a member of the Board of Directors of CN Altea,Alberto Barenghi, IFDCO President, Marino Gil and Vicens Cespedesas members of Race Committee.

Thursday 14-08

The ÖM for 2008 was hosted by the SCTWV, an old club on theAchensee (and home to the Olympic 470 ladies team Sylvia Vogl /Christina Flatscher who were 8th in Peking). The grounds used tobelong to a monastery and so, not only is the club house still in originalstyle, but the old chapel is still being used as well, as bar and barbecuespot nowadays. Unsurprisingly, the atmosphere was excellent.34 boats on the entry list (15AUT, 16 GER, 1 ITA, 1 NED and 2 POL),making it the biggest Austrian Championship since a long time. Anindication of the positive development the Austrian FD fleet hasshown in recent years. This year there were about four new teams, ofwhich theAUT-31 looked most promising. Sailing a brand new Mader, helmsman Julius Trippolt (20 years) and crew Lukas Linhart (17 years)were here for their very first FD regatta, after dropping out of theAustrian 470 team. Furthermore, an older team was sailing in the POL-7 (once famous as the Bojsen-Møller boat, then the Douglas Parkerboat). They are new in the FD since this year’s Kieler Woche andalthough the helmsman confessed he’d sailed FD before, his last timewas 26 years ago. Predicted favourites for Austrian Champion 2008:Kilian and Schappi König, Bernd Schreiber,Gerhard Ulrich, Christophand Sylvia Aichholzer and (hopefully) Fred Schaaf.

Friday 15-08

The first day of racing. 33 boats at the start, from 4 nations: AlbertoBarenghi couldn’t make it. All boats had managed to get through theunexpectedly strict measurement and were ready for the first startaround 14:00 hours. Heavy rain and wind in the morning and, evenmore unpleasant for the middle of August, ± 12° C. because theAchensee is located at almost 1 km altitude. Luckily, at 14:00 morefavourable conditions with a 2/3 Bf. breeze from the North. We manageto win the first race, followed by Sylvia Aichholzer and ChristophZingerle in the AUT-39.The second race won by last year’s championsChristoph Aichholzer and Philipp Zingerle in the AUT-382, withGerhard Ulrich (AUT-15) and ourselves in pursuit. At the end of thisrace the wind picks up to a good 4 Bf. New team of AUT-31 showsquick adaptation skills by winning the third race they’ve ever sailed inan FD. Kilian König had some problems during the second and thirdrace and theAUT-382 managed to lose a spinnaker pole along the way.

Quite a few boats capsized as well, with the day prize going to theGreek-Australian team in the GER-1902 at three times. Fortunately,no serious damage anywhere. Conditions for racing get worse and afteran attempted 4th race is cancelled we sail home in heavy rain. Tastysoup and cocktails more than make up for it though.

Provisional result: 1) NED-5 2) AUT-382 3) AUT-31

Saturday 16-08

10:00 first race; again North wind with Bf. 3.With 10° C. dry suits andwinter caps are no exception. The first race won by the surprise of thisregatta, the AUT-31. The second race, after lunch, with South wind Bf.2/3.As of this race we sail together with a small fleet of Ynglings, whohave a smaller regatta during Saturday and Sunday. Finally a bitwarmer! Sylvia Aichholzer wins 2nd race before her brother. Thirdrace: still South Bf. 1/2, some sun too. Shortened by second top markbecause of dying wind. GER-13 wins before, once more AUT-382. Onshore, a good sailors’ dinner with free beer and more cocktails.

Provisional result: 1) AUT-382 2) AUT-31 3) GER-13

Sunday 17-08

For the first time no rain in the morning. Partly sunny, but no wind.At11:00 a little wind picks up, allowing a Bf. 2 during the first race.Wonby Schappi König (GER-13). The wind picks up a bit more to a goodBf. 3; once again won by König sr. GER-13 andAUT-382 are now real-ly close in points, so the final race must decide the winner. Third race, still Bf. 3, this time won by Kilian König (GER-113). AUT-31 by thistime had some lesser results and dropped off the stage.A good sailingday and in the endAichholzer kept his head and his title. An elaborateprize giving follows, in which GER-13 receives 2nd prize and NED-53rd. As soon as all the boats were packed the rain came back as if itnever went away and stayed the rest of the day. But it couldn’t preventanyone from having had an excellent Austrian Championship. Enoughwind for nine races, good food and drink at the end of each day andhappy sailors when it was all over.

Flying Dutchman Bulletin 155

By Julian Bridges (GBR-380)

The British FD fleet were invited to join the LOSSC centenary regattaover the last weekend of August, and enjoyed a three day regatta, onand off the water, with a good variety of conditions. The results beliedthe closeness of the racing, which saw Jon Williams and Alex Rogersagain take the championships.

Starting on Friday in light breeze with a strong tide, the first race wascomfortably won by Peter Doran and Richard Phillips, fromTony Lyall, with the eventual winners finishing last after trying every flyer theycould find. However, in similar conditions with slightly more wind thesecond race saw Strang and Alex recovering their style and winningconvincingly. The day was completed with a class championship dinnerin the club.

Saturday’s racing, held in classic Solent conditions of 18-20 knots east-erly winds over the tide was a very different matter with Strang andAlex dominating all three races. Mike Pickles, well known Javelinsailor, enjoying the grace and power of FD sailing for the first time, helming for Jamie Whitaker, took two of the seconds, before gear fail-ure forced their retirement from the final race. Peter and Richard keptthe event open with a third, fourth and second while the back markersenjoyed the exhilaration, terror and swimming of windy FD sailing.Sharing the course with the asymmetric B14s meant that competitorshad to keep their eyes open, but far more spectacular and unusual wasthe hovercraft open day being held at HMS Daedalus which involvedthe fleet being buzzed by various machines providing joyrides, appar-ently without much directional control, so actually very similar to theB14s. The many competitors in the club regatta joined the visitors tocelebrate the centenary with a splendid buffet supper, a live band, andGordon’s free birthday beer all of which were provided on the Saturdayevening by the club organisation led by FD crew Jim Harrop.

With two races scheduled for Sunday, the event was still theoreticallyopen, but with flat calm and intermittent drizzle, prospects were not

good for any sailing at all. After a long postponement ashore, the fleetenjoyed the water frolics of the more excitable of the young people sail-ing B14s, during a long postponement afloat. Following another periodashore, both fleets rushed back onto the water with the onset of a bit ofair. Steve Parry, RO for the weekend, got it exactly right, holding a raceduring the only 45 minutes of good breeze during the day. Strang andAlex led for the majority of the race to be caught right at the finish byPeter and Richard, with Jon Berry and Simon Anderson, also a new-comer to FD sailing, third. With the breeze fading to nothing again anda random flypast from a wartime Lancaster, that was it, both for the dayand the championship.

Dr. Gizmo complainsMore than fifty years after its conception the Fly-ing Dutchman still effortlessly holds on to its un-disputed status of Lion King in the jungle ofdinghy sailing. Surely, the FD’s sailing perfor-mance is indeedmore than respectable. However,it is probably fair to say that the boat owes a sub-stantial chunk of its enduring legacy to its sheerlooks. Just marvel at that elegant scoop, culmi-nating in the sturdy bow, radiating at the sametime manly aggressiveness and female elegance:more classic than the Mondschein Sonata. Parkthe FD next to any one of those modern thirt-een-in-a-dozen skiff-things and ask, pointing atyour victim’s pitiful front side: “You call that adeck? ...Now that’s a deck” as you triumphantlyturn to your FD and measure its foredeck withbroad arm gestures. But, certainly, more thananything else, the FlyingDutchman’s secret shock-and-awe weapon is its huge genoa. The overlapof this foresail extends two thirds of the way tothe transom offering a silhouette that make theboat instantly recognizable from almost any dis-tance. If any single detail stands out as a symbolof the FD’s masculinity, it must be its genoa.Butwhat has happened?

TwoDutch wimps, claiming to be FD sailors, have done the unthinkable. They have irrever-ently andwillfully castrated the alpha-male,by re-placing its proud genoa with a pansy, faggoty

handkerchief. One of the FD Bulletin’s own pa-parazzi was able to secretly photograph the resultof these guys’ misguided tests. Just take a look atthe picture below and shiver with sheer disgust.

Why did they do it? Their utterly unconvin-cing defense is as follows:First: the guys claim that they are way too lightfor an FD: together they weigh in at a pitiful 140kg. One wonders why they don’t buy a 470 or a29-er to play with the other kids, but granted, withthat crewweight an FD is probably overpoweredat any wind speed over 8 knots or so.Second: they claim that the standard genoa hastoo much overlap to be efficient. Just look at thewings of glider planes and modern high tech sai-ling machines; it is high-aspect wings and riggingthat seem to be the in-vogue-thing if you wantperformance and pointing ability. It is with theutmost reluctance that Gizmo has to admit thatthis argument is not entirely nonsensical.Thirdly: safety; the FD genoa is so big that it is allbut impossible to spot any competing boat toleeward. Countless collisions have ensued fromthis total lack of visibility. The smaller sail allowsa clear view behind the leech of the jib. What abag of rubbish: if you can’t take the heat, stayaway from the fire.

No matter how reasonable some of the ar-guments for the small sail may seem, they do not-hing to relieve the dismay of your narrator. Itsimply amounts to nothing but blasphemy. Luc-

kily, these poor twits have had little or no suc-cess with their new gadget. In races they are whe-re they belong:at the back of the pack. But let theybe warned: if, god forbid, they ever start winningwith this sail, they better opt for personal pro-tection.

The Skiing Championship for FlyingDutchman sailors on the 2nd of March 2008was the only skiing event in the entire areathat was finished that day. Because of theeffects of hurricane Emma all organized ski-ing matches in the area had to be cancelledthat Sunday. As a consequence, for example, all ski lifts from Stuhleck, Semmering andPräbichl were out of order. Although the firstsquall on Mount Lammeralm had alreadybeen very heavy that Saturday, there was nobig damage. Later on, the squall was followed

by hail storms, transforming into snow storms. But, since the wind mainly came from a westto west-north-westerly direction, MountLammeralm was in a secure position, preven-ting the wind from blowing in full strength.Nevertheless, at the first gust of wind thepower supply on the Lammeralm ski arenahad already been interrupted by fallen trees.Since the power on the Lammeralm was stilldown on Sunday March 2nd, the chair lift wasout of order, causing us to be thrown back onthe diesel-operated drag lift. The power sup-ply for the time registration was also down. But, because the staff of Ski arenaLammeralm had with exemplary conductarranged an emergency power assembly fromthe fire department, the races could have apunctual start on Sunday, despite the circum-stances.Despite the unfavourable weather conditions– on Sunday morning there was wet, fresh

snow on the run and rain from above – 70 ofthe 100 expected contestants came to thestart. Without a problem the giant slalom onthe FIS-race track - organized by ÖSV-trainerand race leader Sabine Lair – could be run bythe FD sailors and the Prater Tennis club play-ers (whose race was being held at the sametime as the FD-race).The winner of the 3rd International FlyingDutchman skiing championship was ThomasOswald, from Salzburger Yachtclub in 52,76sec., followed by Kenneth Andersson (54,13)from Swedish sailing club Delfinen and crewof the Swedish champions FD team, and lastyear’s champion Wolfgang Sitzwohl (55,36)from Yachtclub Odysseas-Graz.Among the tennis players of the Prater-Tennisclub Peter Krassel from KSV was the best, fol-lowed by Heinz Waerder from SV-Schwarz-Blau and Herbert Hrdlicka from the ViennaCricket Club. An interesting detail about thisPeter Krassel is that he ended 4th in theAustrian giant slalom championships in the1960’s, beating Karl Schranz – who in this raceended 7th - , in those days a sensation for askiier from Austria. It seems that PeterKrassel (JG 42) hasn’t lost his skiing skills yet.The ski arena on Mount Lammeralm, bothrenowned as family skiing area and as trainingmountain for the Austrian Skiing Assocation(the Görgl sisters and Karin Blaser have trai-ned here for their World Cup races!) had thepreparations for the skiing run perfectly undercontrol, even among such extreme weatherconditions. And so, thanks to that, the conditi-ons for all the races were good.

Obituary Hans Schelling

Hans Schelling died on the 20th of may 2008at the age of 53 on de consequences of adraining disease. Until the last moment hestayed optimistic and kept on sailing, his pas-sion. When he realized sailing became moreand more difficult to him, he was broken.

Hans was a very talented sailor. He started tosail in a Dutch youth class at theKagerplassen near his home town. As ayoung boy he had to cycle back and forthquite a distance to be able to sail. Later hebought himself a second hand FJ, refitted andmodernized the boat and became a DutchChampion and was also present in interna-tional events. After finishing his education asa physiotherapist he started his own practiceand was able to put more money in his pas-sion.

In 1982 he started racing in the FlyingDutchman in a B&C and he bought a newMader in 1983. With his tactical insight as atalented helmsman, his length and weight hewas an ideal crew and with his helmsmanHenri Koning they became the leading Dutchteam. In Holland the building of the KDVFD had started and Hans was very interestedand involved in the further development of it.Hans wrote some articles about the trim of aFD in various wind strengths in the DutchFD flyer to share his experience and knowl-edge with other Dutch sailors. Hans was amodest man and had no big talk, but wasalways willing to help his fellow sailors tobecome better. Ultimately he and Henrisailed several KDV’s and became elected tosail for Holland at The Olympics of Seoul in1987. They retired as a team in 1989 shortlyafter becoming Dutch champions in 1988.But occasionally he crewed with me and wasespecially pleased about the bigger spin-naker. Still interested in the FD, Hans andHenri Koning took care of several trainingsessions for the Dutch FD class in earlysprings,

After his FD career Hans started sailing in atypical Dutch class, the Falcon class, a classwith a lot of experienced and competitivecrews. In a short time he had a good speedand was in front of the fleet. I think a veryfew people knew ass much as he about hull

dimensions and mast sail combinations. Askill he made himself in his former classes theFJ and FD and still keeping contact and dis-cussion with Johan Vels of KDV.

Hans was a long time figurehead of theFalconclass and became several times Dutchchampion. He made a short sidestep to theFinnclass but returned to the Falcon after therevealing of his disease, and also because hemissed the sailing on a nice afternoon withhis wife Els and daughter Femke.

Hans will be missed greatly by his family, friends and all the sailors who have had theprivilege to sail with and against him.May herest in peace.

Obituary Thecla Gulcher vanStyrumIt is with sadness that IFDCO reports thedeath of Thecla; second wife of ConradGulcher whose vision and inspiration led tothe design and development of the FDClass.

Thecla worked very hard for the FD Classtravelling around the world supportingConrad who was IFDCOGeneral Secretaryuntil 1988. After his death in 1989, Theclacontinued to provide guidance and inspira-tion and was always very kind and consider-ate and keen to extol the virtues of the FD.Thecla awarded the prizes each year at theConrad Gulcher Memorial regatta held atLoosdrecht the birth place of the FD.

At the 50th Anniversary Regatta, Theclawas delighted that the FD Class was stillalive and well.

Obituary Tom Clancy

It is with great sadness that the BritishFD Class reports the death of TomClancy following a heart attack whilstvisiting the USA. Tom was a very loyalsupporter of the FD Class. He kept hisFD at Grafham Water and participatedin numerous FD events in the UK andwas always friendly and his sense ofhumour provided great entertainment ateach event.

Tribute from David WilkinsTom and I first met in 1978 when Tomwas looking to get an FD with the idea ofdoing an Olympic campaign. He soonrealized what it took and he decided hisbest efforts would be to help us with ours.He took on the role of fundraising forour campaign as there was very littlemoney available from Ireland. He raisedthe money that bought the new boat –IR5 that we went on to win a silver medalin. He also supported us through 1980 byacting as our support at most majorevents.

He was with us in Tallinn for theOlympics – which he always said was oneof the high spots for him. That was a bitof a battle with the ISA – but he hadgiven us huge support and deserved to bethere more than anyone in Ireland.

He eventually inherited that boat,Glenfarne (named after his belovedhome town in Ireland) from us in 1984.He continued to support the class from1980 (when he sailed IR4) until veryrecently when his poor health restrictedhis sailing. I know he loved sailing the FDmore than any other boat and enjoyedthe company of all the British FD fleet.

His dry sense of humour will be missedby all who knew him.

We all send our condolences and bestwishes to Teresa and his three daughters.
