My dear fellow Rotarians,
Many of you have asked me how to retain our existing members? Simple answer is by enhancing member engagement. We have to make every member feel like a rock star when they come for weekly, fortnightly or monthly Rotary meetings or activities. We must make every member’s Rotary membership experience memorable to them so they engage in Rotary with enthusiasm. I mean every member, not a handful who do everything in a club year after year!
On Australia Day in January, Jimboomba, Beaudesert and Jimboomba Satellite clubs came together to have 100 cyclists ride 100kms in the scenic rim and later to a mega BBQ to enhance their member engagement. On February 5
th Grafton, Grafton Mid-Day and Maclean
clubs came together to engage 100 of their members and community leaders to launch Rotary Australia 100
th
year baton relay. TV and Press followed them and was quick to report our Relay with a Cause “Rotary says NO to domestic violence” on national news. It made Rotarians TV stars. Rotarians were happy. In Goondiwindi, Rotarians staged a colourful launch of the
baton relay with a family fun evening with over 800 people. The evening ended with music and a fireworks display. Media followed them. It made Rotarians feel like rock stars. Rotarians were happy.
Rotary Australia 100th year celebration baton relay is an
ideal opportunity for Rotary clubs to bring our members together. Bring them out of club meeting rooms to the street to showcase Rotary to our communities. It’s our friendship, tolerance, compassion and usefulness that people will be attracted to. Not Rotary meetings. Let’s Make Membership Memorable! Make M&M’s.
On Valentine ’s Day I will launch the “Rotary Club of Koala Lovers”. Our 6
th new club this year. It will attract to
Rotary those who are environmentalists and wish to engage in protecting this vulnerable animal species. This cause-based club meets once a month on Zoom, like an E-Club. Membership is open to anyone in the world! How many members do you think this new club will attract? Innovation has no limits.
Let’s be brave and try out new things. It’s OK to fail. But let’s fail fast so we learn fast.
