Welcome

We are honored to welcome you to New York Medical College’s (NYMC) 2019 Founder’s Dinner. Thank you for your generous support of this evening and your dedication to NYMC. It is because of you that we can continue in our tradition to educate outstanding healthcare professionals. This has been an exciting year for NYMC. We welcomed the incoming Class of 2023, celebrated the start of our Master of Science in Clinical Laboratory Sciences (CLS) Program, and began the expansion and improvement of BioInc@NYMC, the mid-Hudson Valley’s only fully-equipped biotechnology incubator on a health sciences college campus, as well as the Center for Disaster Medicine, which has served as a training center for emergency medical responders for the past 13 years. Tonight, we celebrate NYMC’s rich history and promising future, honor distinguished leaders in our community who embody the College’s mission, vision and values and, most importantly, raise critical funds to support student scholarships and other vital initiatives. Spanning more than 30 years, we celebrate our friends, Drs. Schleifer and Yancopolous and our relationship with Regeneron, a distinguished neighbor with whom NYMC has shared a uniquely collaborative relationship since its founding in 1988. Our close proximity and synergistic missions have resulted in numerous research collaborations. Regeneron has afforded NYMC students and faculty invaluable access to their real-world efforts in human genetics, animal model development and drug discovery and development. In turn, New York Medical College has afforded Regeneron access to its full breadth of resources including some of the brightest minds in academic biomedical sciences. Regeneron and New York Medical College have both been leading forces in propelling the biotech industry forward locally, highlighted in our shared involvement in the Westchester Biotech Project and [email protected] is our honor to celebrate this important relationship with Regeneron tonight and we would like to congratulate:

• Leonard S. Schleifer, M.D., Ph.D. – Honorary Doctor of Science Degree• George D. Yancopoulos, M.D., Ph.D. – Honorary Doctor of Science Degree

Among our distinguished honorees this evening, we have a chancellor of a health system that oversees one of the largest medical schools in the country; a prominent public health leader who drew national recognition for her work on the diagnosis and public health intervention for the first case of intentional anthrax in the country; and a notable clinician and educator who has transformed the field of psychiatry with his innovative treatment approaches to schizophrenia. We applaud these individuals for their commitment to excellence.

• Robert A. Barish, M.D. ’79, M.B.A. – The William Cullen Bryant Award• Jean Marie Malecki, M.D. ’79, M.P.H., FACPM –

NEW YORK MEDICAL COLLEGE

New York Medical College established the William Cullen Bryant Award in 1983 to recognize those remarkable individuals who, in the tradition of the College’s founder, William Cullen Bryant, demonstrate seminal leadership in health care, science, education, business or the arts.

Bryant, the son of a physician, was an editor, philosopher, poet, lawyer, and dynamic civic leader who substantively influenced the issues of his day through the power of his pen. During the second half of the 19th century, he led a select group of influential individuals in creating New York Medical College, which today has become one of the nation’s largest private health sciences colleges. Bryant subsequently served as president of the College’s Board of Trustees for more than a decade and was the medical school’s first president. The qualities of distinguished and broad leadership that Bryant demonstrated have been characteristic of all William Cullen Bryant medal awardees.

THE FOUNDER’S DINNER 2019

Dr. Jean M. Malecki began her work as director of the Palm Beach County Health Department with a vision of making Palm Beach County the healthiest community in the nation, and over the course of her 19 year career, went on to initiate a local public health system dedicated to serving the entire community by utilizing partnerships from every entity.A South Florida native, Dr. Malecki’s training began at Fairfield University in Connecticut where she obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree with pre-medical honors, and a medical degree from New York Medical College where she graduated with honors including membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society, Cor Et Manus Service Society and American Women’s Citation for Scholastic Achievement in Medicine. She earned a Master of Public Health Degree

from the University of Miami. Dr. Malecki is board certified in general preventive medicine and public health, and is a fellow of the American Board of Preventive Medicine and Public Health, and an alumnus of the Public Health Leadership Institute. In 1982, when HIV/AIDS was an emerging disease in Palm Beach County, Dr. Malecki diagnosed one of the first children with AIDS and helped form the Comprehensive AIDS Program, a 501c3, initially started with one of the first Robert Wood Johnson Grants Foundation for this disease. This program now serves more than 7,000 people living with HIV/AIDS in the County. In the mid-1990s, Dr. Malecki formed the Maternal Child Health Alliance and became its first president. Soon after, she helped create the Healthy Start, an off-shoot of the Maternal Child Health Allicance, which provides in-home counseling to pregnant women and follow-up care for mother and baby. Today, Palm Beach County maintains one of the lowest infant mortality rates in the United States. In 2001, Dr. Malecki received international attention for her assistance in the diagnosis and public health intervention of the first case of intentional Anthrax, successfully leading the investigation for the state of Florida. In 2002, when citizens of Palm Beach County voted to create the Health Care District of Palm Beach County to guarantee funding for health care and trauma services, Dr. Malecki served on the Board of Directors and helped initiate the Palm Beach County-Wide Trauma System. In addition, with funding through the District’s insurance programs, Dr. Malecki expand the primary care clinics within the Health Department—adding four new clinic buildings, an administrative complex, a hospital and county nursing home. Many of the programs instituted under Dr. Malecki’s leadership have become models for local public health systems throughout the nation, including: the Hospital Emergency Response Coalition, formed to unify the private hospitals in the event of a disaster; Protocol for Assessing Community Excellence in Environmental Health, to provide environmental support to communities in need of better water, air and land systems; and Community Health Division to forge public/private partnerships. Much of this has been accomplished through Dr. Malecki’s foresight in making the Palm Beach County Health Department an Academic Health Department that is constantly learning, teaching, and creating innovative ways to better serve the public’s health.Dr. Malecki has been identified as “Changing the Face of Medicine” and a Local Legend by the National Library of Medicine. She has been named one of the top 25 Faces of Public Health by the American Public Health Association and a Woman of Distinction by the Women’s Chamber of Commerce. She is a recipient of a Presidential Citation for her leadership in curtailing the risk from bioterrorism.

NEW YORK MEDICAL COLLEGE

The Jackson E. Spears Community Service Award is bestowed upon those individuals and organizations that have demonstrated exceptional service and commitment to our communities. It was created in 2000 to honor Jackson E. Spears, who served as a member of New York Medical College’s Board of Trustees for 60 years, from 1943 to 2003. Loyal, steadfast, sharp-witted, selfless, practical, wise and relentless in his promotion of the College and its mission, Mr. Spears was a member of virtually every Board committee during his tenure, frequently serving as chairman. He served as vice chairman of the Board from 1956 to 1964 and chairman from 1965 to 1972, and he was appointed acting president of the College twice. He also provided pivotal leadership in the decision to relocate the College from New York City to Valhalla in the early 1970s.

A native of Dallas, Texas, Mr. Spears was a corporate executive in the textile industry until his retirement from Burlington Industries as a vice president in 1961. Throughout his career, he was also active in civic and community service. He has authored or co-authored more than 200 articles published in the scientific literature and wrote or edited ten books on mental/psychiatric illness, psychopharmacology, family therapy, and recently sports psychiatry. He is a long-time editor of the American Society Clinical Psychopharmacology Model Psychopharmacology Curriculums with separate publications for teachers of psychiatric residents and another for both medical students and primary care clinician.

Dr. Glick has received numerous national and international awards for his research and teaching including those from the American Psychiatric Association, American College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ACNP) and the Association of Academic Psychiatry. He received the 2014 Kum Po Soo Award from the American Psychiatric Association, as well as an “exemplary psychiatrist” award from the National Alliance for Mental Illnesses (NAMI). In 2017, he received the Dean Award from the American College of Psychiatrists for his research in Schizophrenia. THE FOUNDER’S DINNER 2019

Dr. Bennett is the Dorys McConnell Duberg Professor of Pharmacology and Professor of Comparative Medicine at the Yale School of Medicine. He also serves as co-director of the Integrative Cell Signaling and Neurobiology of Metabolism Program at Yale and is Director of Minority Affairs for the Yale Graduate Program in the Biological and Biomedical Sciences.

Dr. Bennett’s research focuses on exploring how protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs) participate in the pathogenesis of diseases such as obesity and diabetes, cardiovascular disease and developmental abnormalities. Using an integrated approach (that

encompasses cell biology, genetics, protein biochemistry, cell imaging and animal models), Dr. Bennett’s long-term research goal is to uncover the function of PTPs in order to identify whether these enzymes might serve as novel therapeutic targets for the treatment of human diseases.

Dr. Bennett received his B.Sc. in Biochemistry from Liverpool John Moores University and his Ph.D. from New York Medical College in Pathology. He did his post-doctoral training at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories and Harvard Medical School. He is the recipient of the Pharmaceuticals Manufacturers Association Young Investigators Award (2000), and the Burroughs Welcome Award for New Investigators in Pharmacology (2001). He was awarded the Blavatnik Fund Yale Innovation Award in 2017.
