Nature Notes by Roseanne Guerra, Secretary of FCHOA & Atlanta Audubon Master Birder

Time for a Walk in the Woods!

Well Forest Chase, it’s a brand new year, and time to get active and work off all of those holiday pounds (for me, at least). My favorite exercise is a walk in the woods, of course! One of my favorite things about Atlanta is that it is truly a “city in a forest” - there are beautiful patches of forest tucked into the most surprising of places. Here are just a few of my favorite places for a peaceful walk in the woods that are all within half an hour of our neighborhood:

Leita Thompson Memorial Park.

1200 Woodstock Road (Highway 92), Roswell

I’m sure we all drive past this little landscaped park often. Did you know that there are three miles of walking trails looping off of the park? The trails descend into a valley, cutting off the road noise from Highway 92. It’s a great walk for tree lovers: big-leaf magnolias, huge beeches and white oaks. There is also a dog park.

Big Creek Greenway.

1600 Old Alabama Road, Roswell

The Big Creek Greenway is a meticulously maintained, completely flat, paved trail that runs 8 miles alongside Big Creek and North Point Parkway (bikes allowed). There are ponds and wetlands to be seen; birds and white-tailed deer abound.

Olde Rope Mill Park.

690 Rope Mill Road, Woodstock

I had no idea this park existed until I purchased the fantastic new book, Hiking Atlanta’s Hidden Forests by Jonah McDonald. It is a beautiful spot with something for everyone: paved trails, unpaved trails, mountain bike trails, and a view of Little River. A rope mill did indeed operate here until 1950 and the ruins are still visible. This is my family’s favorite spot to paddle our canoe.

Morgan Falls Overlook Park.

200 Morgan Falls Road, Sandy Springs

This park boasts a fantastic playground that even older kids enjoy. Swing chairs offer wrap-around views of Bull Sluice Lake. Keep an eye out for bald eagles, and be sure to walk or drive to the end of Morgan Falls Road to see the 100-year-old dam, which is still generating electricity for Georgia Power.

Don’t forget our own little Forest Chase common area, with surprisingly abundant wildlife, babbling creek, picnic tables, tetherball and basketball.

Did I leave out your favorite spot? Post it on our Yahoo group or Facebook page. I hope you get a chance to enjoy some of our beautiful natural areas soon.

by Susan Rukeyser (a Forest Chase resident)

Forest Chase dogs are lucky dogs! Our neighborhood offers long walks along mature, wooded areas. There’s even a creek-side path to explore. I enjoy meeting fellow dog parents when I’m out with Daphne, our goofy black lab/beagle rescue. I’m no expert in dog training or etiquette, but I have thoughts about maximizing everyone’s enjoyment of our shared space:

MEET & GREET

Dogs are social creatures who want to meet, sniff, and establish a hierarchy in their “pack.” If your dog is friendly and up to date with shots, Daphne wants to make friends! That said, please stay away if you’re uncomfortable for any reason. Maybe call out something like, “He doesn’t like new dogs!” You might tie a yellow ribbon to your dog’s leash. It doesn’t necessarily mean he’s aggressive, just that he needs space and may have issues of fear or pain.1

MAINTAIN CONTROL

In our fenced backyard, Daphne runs free, chasing squirrels. But when we walk she’s under control in a strong harness. Our last dog, a pug, was attacked by a dog who slipped his collar. Buy gear appropriate for your dog’s size and avoid retractable leashes—they’re dangerous. They can cause serious injury to people and enable dogs to approach others uninvited.2

PICK UP WASTE

Look, no one enjoys it, but we have to pick up our dogs’ waste, every time, and dispose of it properly. It’s “a known source of E. coli bacteria and other pathogens in local streams.”3 It attracts flies and it’s gross. Picking up waste isn’t just neighborly, it’s the law: Cobb County Code: 10-138, Sanitation.

Dogs make life just a bit more fun. So get outside with them and enjoy our beautiful space! And let me know if you ever need to borrow a poop bag—I usually carry plenty.

New App for resident service requests for DOT, YourGOVCobb County Department of Transportation (DOT) Launches YourGOV, a smart phone and web based work request tool for citizens. What is YourGOV?

YourGOV allows citizens to submit non-emergency service requests directly to the DOT work management system. By accessing the YourGOV website or using the smart device app, citizens can photograph a problem and request that work be completed at a specified location. YourGOV service requests relate to roadway issues such as potholes, traffic signals, debris, signs, and sidewalks. Citizens are also able to track the progress of their requests and receive automatic updates throughout the lifecycle of their request.

Disclaimer: Your GOV is for reporting NON-EMERGENCY issues only. If immediate police or fire department response is needed, please call 911. Utilize YourGOV when it safe to do so; do not text and drive.

A sunny window and a few small pots equal a jump start on spring gardening, no matter the temps outside.

GROW a Kitchen Herb Garden

>OREGANOcan go a while without watering. Snip it regularly so it doesn’t get leggy.

>SAGE/ROSEMARYboth tolerate cool temperatures, so if the window is a chilly area, they won’t mind.

>THYMEcan grow in partial shade. It is antiseptic, as well as an aid to digestion.

>CHIVEScan be transplanted from outdoors to pots and grow back quickly again and again.

Make sure your containers have drainage holes to stop root to, as well as drip trays to catch the water underneath.

1. Kitchen Faucets- wipe the faucet and soap pump daily with a favorite antibacterial cleaner OR vinegar sprayed on a paper towel.

2. Refrigerator Crisper Drawers- wipe down the drawers with dish soap OR diluted white vinegar. Both are safe if any residue comes in contact with food. When the drawer is out, take a moment to clean the bottom of the refrigerator!

3. Walls & Cabinet fronts- Ammonia is hands down the best cleaner for cutting through fried on grime. Open the windows and wear rubber gloves and keep the rag damp (but not dripping) with a diluted ammonia solution.

4. Ceilings & Ceiling fans- What’s on the top of the blades? Spritz the inside of an old pillow case with all purpose cleaner or dusting spray. Shimmy it on to the blade and grip tightly as you slide it off. Dust should remain in the pillowcase.
