Covering an areaof only 2 square miles, the island is small enoughto easily be explored on foot. This remote andbeautiful island with its local church built fromdriftwood, is steeped in folklore and legend.

The island's sheer cliffs are home to huge colonies of sea birds and in summer, theintrepid islanders abseil down the cliff faces tocollect the eggs that are considered a localdelicacy. The present settlement is located onthe southern and western parts of Grimsey - mostof it around the little harbour, which has beenimproved during the last few years thanks to thetransportation of large rocks from the mainland.

In 1793 the island was almost abandoned whena disease killed all but 6 of the male population.

The remaining 6 went on a mission to themainland in order to fetch ‘back-up’. However,on the return journey the boat was lost at seaand all were drowned, leaving the clergyman asthe only male on the island!

An interesting and informative guided walkaround the island will reveal the highlights of thisfascinating community before boarding yourplane back to Akureyri. Certificates are awardedfor crossing the Arctic Circle.

Essential information. The flight to Grimseytakes approximately 30 minutes each way. The guided walk is over grass, rough terrainand puffin burrows so extreme care must betaken to avoid tripping. Approximately 1 hourwill be spent on the island.

Jewels of the North BEST SELLER 5½

AEY004 by coach and on foot

A cocktail of beautiful scenery, cascadingwaterfalls, lava formations and bubbling mudpools provide a real taste of Iceland.

Visit the impressive waterfall of Goðafoss, whichcarries a huge volume of water from theSkjálfandafljót River. This beautiful crescent ofcascading water gained its name at the time ofIceland’s conversion to Christianity. In 1000 AD,at the meeting of the Althing, the Icelandersvoted to adopt Christianity. The wooden idols ofthe Norse mythology were thrown into the falls ina symbolic gesture that swept away the oldreligion. Thus, Goðafoss literally means the‘Waterfall of the Gods’.

From Goðafoss, continue to the Lake Myvatn area stopping by the unique craters atSkutustadir. Frequent lava flows have leftIceland’s 4th largest lake, Lake Mývatn veryirregular in shape.

Marvel at the Dimmuborgir lava labyrinth, anincredible panorama of rugged crags andpeculiar lava formations in shapes such ascolumns and arches. The last stop is at thegurgling purple and yellow sulphur cauldrons atthe high temperature thermal field ofNámaskarð.

Refreshments will be served during the tour.

Essential information. There is a total of 1½hours’ walking over some gravel and roughground. The level of walking undertaken is atthe discretion of each passenger and mostsights can be viewed from the coach. AtGoðafoss there is an uneven, lava surface andno handrails; therefore passengers are advisedto exercise caution. Comfortable, flat andenclosed footwear is recommended.
