The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is anindependent agency of the United States government.
Established by the Communications Act of 1934.
It is charged with regulating Interstate andInternational commerce in communication.
The purpose is to protect the public interest by
regulating Radio, television and Wire/Cablecommunication.

In 1927 Radio Act was passed by Congress, which leadsto the development of Federal Radio Commission (FRC).
In 1934 Congress passed the communication act , which
abolished FRC and transferred radio licensing to FCC.
It also includes the Telecommunication jurisdictionpreviously handled by the Interstate CommerceCommission (ICC).
The Telecommunication Act of 1996 was designed tofoster competition among companies that use similarunderlying network technologies.

Specific responsibilities of FCC are:
To review rate and service-charge applications madeby telecommunication services providers.
To review the technical specifications by
communications hardware.
To establish reasonable common carrier rates ofreturn.
To divide and allocate radio frequencies.
To assign carrier frequencies for radio and televisionbroadcasts.

The FCC rules and regulations are codified in Title 47 of
the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR).
After October 1 of each year, the GPO compiles all thechanges, additions, and deletions to the FCC rules andpublishesanupdated CFR.
They are initially published inthe Federal Register.
The Office ofEngineering andTechnology (OET) is
responsible for the maintenance of FCC rules.
