CHIZIK IN THIRD YEAR Gene Chizik is one of just three head coach-

es to have won a BCS National Championshipwith less than five years experience as a headcoach at the college or NFL level.

After taking Auburn to the BCS title in justhis fourth season as a head coach, Chizik joinedBob Stoops (Oklahoma, 2nd year) and LarryCoker (Miami, 1st year) to have accomplishedthe feat. Stoops led OU to the 2000 BCSChampionship, while Coker led Miami to the2001 title.

In two seasons at Auburn, Chizik has com-piled a record of 22-5 and 11-5 in SEC play.Chizik became the first Auburn head coach totake the Tigers to a bowl game in his first seasonat the helm (2009).

Chizik has been a part of three perfectteams in the past seven years, 2010 and 2004 withAuburn and 2005 with Texas.

Gus Malzahn will have a different starting QB asa collegiate offensive coordinator.

In his first two years with Auburn, Malzahnhad Chris Todd (2009) & Cam Netwon (2010)start under center. During two seasons at Tulsa,Malzahn had Paul Smith (2007) & DavidJohnson (2008) calling the signals. In 2006 atArkansas, Malzahn began the season with RobertJohnson at QB.

Despite a lack of continuity, quarterbacksunder Malzahn have flourished, particularity intheir first start.

THE 800 CLUBFor the first time in Auburn history the

Tigers return a pair of rushers who each ran for800 yards or more the previous season. JuniorOnterio McCalebb ran for 810 yards, third-bestin 2010, while sophomore Michael Dyer rushedfor an AU freshman record (second-most onteam) 1,093 yards last season.

Auburn has come close to having a pair of800-yard rushers return the following season,the most recent coming in 2003 when CarnellWilliams ran for 745 yards and Ronnie Brownran for 1,008 yards in 2002.

The Tigers nearly turned the feat in 1983with Bo Jackson and Lionel James. Jackson ranfor a then freshman record 829 yards and Jamesrushed for 779 yards in 1982.

1,000 YARD RETURNERMichael Dyer is Auburn’s first returning

1,000-yard rusher since 2006 when RB KennyIrons returned for his senior season. Irons ledthe SEC in rushing in 2005 with 1,293 yards andfollowed that by totaling 893 yards in ‘06.

Auburn has not had a rusher total 1,000yards or more in consecutive seasons sinceCarnell Williams in 2003-04. Williams ran for1,307 in 2003 and 1,165 in 2004.

Dyer rushed for an AU freshman-record

1,093 yards in 2010. Dyer is the 14th player inAU history to rush for 1,000 yards or more andis in position to become just the fourth Auburnplayer to post consecutive 1,000-yard rushingseasons. Auburn’s three previous players are:

have two returning running backs who eachrushed for 700 yards or more last season.Wisconsin is the second team as the Badgersreturn RB’s James White (1,052 yards) andMontee Ball (996 yards) from last season.

A third team, Nebraska, also returns twoplayers who rushed for 700 yards or more lastseason but only one is a running back.Quarterback Taylor Martinez ran for 965 yardsand RB Rex Burkhead rushed for 951 yards in2010.

2011 SENIOR CLASSThe Tigers began last season with a pro-

gram-record 24 seniors, all of which had playingexperience or had lettered. Auburn goes into the2011 season with just 11 seniors who have let-tered, which is tied for the third lowest total inthe modern era.

Auburn is 16-0 against teams currently inthe Sun Belt Conference and has played at leastone team from the Sun Belt in seven of the lastnine years.

PRESEASON RANKINGSFor the eighth time in the last nine years

Auburn is nationally ranked to begin the season.The Tigers are ranked 23rd in the AssociatedPress poll, and 19th in the USA Today Coaches’poll. It marks the second straight season underhead coach Gene Chizik the Tigers have beenranked in the preseason polls after coming in atNo. 22 in the AP and No. 23 in the Coaches’ pollsto begin the 2010 season.

In the eight prior seasons Auburn has had apreseason ranking, the Tigers have finished theseason ranked five times, missing the final pollsin 2008 and 2003.

RETURNING PLAYMAKERSLast season the Tigers had 27 touchdowns

plays covering 30 yards or more (14 rush/13pass). Of those 27 plays, returners Michael Dyer,Onterio McCalebb, Quindarius Carr and EmoryBlake combined for 12 (44 pct.) of those plays.

Dyer had five TD runs, averaging 22.0yards per run, with his last three scoring runs allgoing over 30 yards (38, 30, 37). McCalebb aver-aged 30.2 yards per TD run with four runs goingfor 49 yards or longer.

Blake had four of his eight TD catches gofor 30 yards or more and averaged 31.6 yards per.Blake was part of the longest play in AU historyas he and Cam Newton connected on a 94-yardthrow-and-catch vs. ULM.

Carr had one TD grab over 30 yards, a 48yard grab vs. Arkansas State. Carr is averaging36.7 yards per scoring catch for his career withgrabs of 48, 46 & 16.

BUILDING OFF SUCCESSA pair of sophomores on the defensive line

will look to carryover their success from 2010into this season.

Last season, Corey Lemonier played inevery game, starting one, and totaled 17 tackleswith 5.0 TFL’s and 2.0 sacks in earning SEC All-Freshman honors. Lemonier was the first AUdefensive lineman named to the SEC All-Freshman team since Antoine Carter in 2007.

Fellow defensive lineman Nosa Egua looksto build off his freshman campaign. Egua playedin every game and started the last 11 consecu-tive, registering 22 tackles, 7.5 TFL’s and 3.5sacks.

RALLY CAPSFour times in the Chizik era the Tigers have

rallied to win after trailing at halftime. The 2010Tigers pulled the trifecta, overcoming deficits toClemson, South Carolina (reg. season) andAlabama. Chizik’s first team (2009) had one half-time rally to beat West Virginia.

Auburn has had a pair of “walk-off ” winsunder Chizik, both coming last year. The Tigersdefeated Oregon in the BCS NationalChampionship Game and Kentucky on the roadon field goals as time expired.
