Nourishing Students One Meal at a Time
Since July 1, 2014, School Sites are required to follow the USDA nutrition standards for snack foods
and beverages that are sold to chil- dren during the school day. These standards, required by the
Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, will allow schools to offer healthier snack foods to students,
while limiting junk food.
Smart Snacks in School is another step toward
improving the health of our students and school
environments. This supports the efforts already
being made by school food service staff, school
administrators, teachers, parents and the school
community to instill healthy eating habits in
stu- dents.

FCPS Wellness Summary
Wellness Initiatives Completed in 2016 Website was redesigned as a Wordpress site. Waiting for District’s new web launch so that
wellness, sustainability and environmental literacy can be combined in same area.
New health clinic opened at Booker T. Washington Elementary. Work group will begin discus-
sions about clinics in middle schools.
14 people were trained as CPR trainers, certified to teach CPR to students and teachers. 20
CPR manikins were purchased with Red Cross grant funds that can be checked out by train-
ers to teach classes.
170 people attended Simple and Sensible Wellness PD events. The next event is scheduled
for February 2017.
The first ever “Super Council” of wellness coordinators met. This group will meet quarterly to
work on school wellness policies, activity in classrooms, and to share wellness initiatives.
Every school site now has a wellness coordinator and we are working through them to share
information, assist in supporting their wellness committees, helping them write wellness poli-
cies for their schools.
Partnered with the Health Department and Rite Aid to do on-site immunizations at each
school location.

PTA 5K
Humana Vitality
Humana Vitality will be rebranding in January to become Go365. We are looking at
the details, so that we can share with employees.
The new program will include innovations for employers such as more
“gamification” (their word) to make it fun for members to get and stay healthy—
Jackpot drawings and Surprise Rewards to keep members engaged.
Go 365 allows for Employer customization which will enable us to create a more
engaging wellness culture. The platform will also allow the District to give non-
fitness events reward Bucks (smoking cessation classes, pre-diabetes classes,
stress reduction activities, etc.).
Beginning in January the Health Department will begin doing work site
biometric measuring for the Humana Vitality program in each of our
school facilities.
The District-wide PTA 5K was run December 2, 2016 at Keen-
eland race course. The 5 kilometer race attracted 671 runners
from 40 schools. The school with the highest participation was Pic-
adome Elementary with 58 runners, Veterans Park was second
with 44 runners, four other schools had more than 40 runners.
Proceeds were shared among the participating school PTA/
PTSAs.
