Families and the Gospel ~ Matthew 18:15-20
The key word in today’s gospel is “listen.” We cannot
change another person; not alone, not with others and not
with a whole Church. All we can do is state our position
and “if he listens to you” then he/she can take the steps
necessary to change themselves. Change comes from
within.
St. Joseph Parish in Williamsburg will host a Chicken
BBQ this Sunday, September 10th. It will be held at
Riverside Park in Williamsburg and will be prepared by
Troy Everhart. Meal time is 11:00am to 1:00pm and the
cost is $8.50 per person.
Saint Matthew School is sponsoring a Fall Craft Fair on Saturday, November 4th. Registration forms are
located in the vestibule and are to be returned October 20th. Mystery revealed! Over a year ago the florist who supplies
our parish with weekly arrangements closed her business. Several weeks later beautiful arrangements were once again gracing our Sanctuary. Since then people have been asking who is creating these floral bouquets? It is our own parishioner, Linda Grove. For many years Linda had her own floral shop in Alexandria before going to work at Juniata College. Linda regularly contributes her talents to decorating the church and gathering space areas, but her special gift with flowers adds inspiration for those of us who benefit from their beauty. Thank you Linda.
A Rosary Rally will be held on Saturday, October 14th at 12
noon at the Tyrone Hotel park on the corner of Pennsylvania Avenue and 10th Street. This rosary rally, which is held through
the organization America Needs Fatima, is in commemoration
of the 100th anniversary of the Miracle of the Sun. The purpose of the rally is to pray for our nation in public so that everyone can see what we believe and in reparation for the sins that have been committed in our modern world. There will be many ways of assisting with this rally. A sign-up sheet and information will be available in the Gathering Space after weekend masses. Blue TV Mass Telecast at 11 am to noon this Sunday on
WATM-TV ABC 23. This mass on September 10th will be celebrated honoring all police, fire, and emergency service personnel. The Blue Mass celebration will be open to the general public. The Blue Mass is unique in that it will be celebrated as a live televised Mass on WATM-TV and the Faith and Family Channel of Cornerstone TV. As a result, many thousands of homebound viewers will be able to appreciate this very special event.

Liturgical Reflection: September 10th When celebrating the Sacrament of Matrimony with
Mass, the order of the rite is: Liturgy of the Word, the
Celebration of Matrimony, and the Liturgy of the
Eucharist. Once the celebration of Matrimony is
completed, the preparation of the altar and gifts follows.
The rite suggests that the bride and bridegroom may
bring the bread and wine to the altar. Other possibilities
would be family or friends. The couple can ask their
godparents to bring up the gifts. Once all is ready on the
altar, Mass proceeds in the usual manner.
Stewardship Reflection -23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
Am I my brother’s keeper? All three readings today
suggest the answer is “yes” for the Christian steward. We
will be rewarded by the Lord if we follow his directives.
HURRICANE HARVEY RELIEF EFFORTS
As catastrophic flooding continues to affect the Gulf Coast region of our country, Bishop Mark is asking the faithful to pray for victims of Hurricane/Tropical Storm Harvey and offer financial support. The Bishop has asked the clergy of the Diocese to take up a special collection at every parish, church, and chapel in Altoona-Johnstown as soon as possible. This collection is to be taken at ALL MASSES the weekend of: September 16-17. All monies
collected will go to Catholic Charities USA, which is already assisting in the areas affected by the storm. Bishop Mark urges the faithful to be as generous as possible. An anonymous Saint Matthew family has issued a challenge/opportunity to our Parish. They will match $100 donations up to 5 other family donations of the same amount. Just imagine, $1,000 of blessings if your family will meet the challenge. Mark your donation Hurricane Harvey Relief Challenge and remit by September 17.
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RICA)~ Are you or someone you know interested in joining the Catholic
Church? In Catholic life, it is necessary to be confirmed in
order to be a godparent at Baptism or sponsor at Confirmation.
If you are an adult, and need the Sacraments of Initiation of
Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist, please join our group

This Weekend’s 2nd collection will be for the Catholic
University of America. Established by Pope Leo XIII
and the U.S. Bishops in 1887, it is the national University
of the Catholic Church. This university claims 1/3 of the
US Bishops and 12,000 priest and religious as alumni.

leadership in our Catholic Church.
HAITI SEA CONTAINERS DEADLINE
EXTENDED TO NEXT SUNDAY, SEPT. 17! The CCW Sisters are in process of collecting various items to
fill the two sea containers that will be sent to Haiti in the near
future. A detailed list of needed items can be found in the
Gathering Space between the Reconciliation Room and Parish
Office. Thanks in advance for all donated items and much
gratitude to Steve Stoner’s 8th grade Religious Education
students who will be preparing collected items next Sunday
evening for delivery to Gallitzin for “staging.”
ADULT SPIRITUALITY CLASS—
THE FIVE W’s (and HOW) OF PRAYER
Seniors in high school through senior citizens are
welcome to explore our church’s rich tradition of prayer
on Tuesdays, September 19, through October 24, 7-
8:30PM with Sr. Karen in the Gathering Space. We will
take a look at the various types of prayer that support our
individual and communal relationship with God. There
is no cost.
Religious Education Classes begins today,
September 10th! Elementary 9-10:15AM; middle and
high school students 6-8PM with a parent meeting
beginning at 5:30 tonight in Harkins Hall. If you have
not registered, please see Gia Patton during these times.
SHYCON registration forms will be available at the

Tours of the Altoona Cathedral will be conducted
thru the month of September. This is the month in which
the Diocesan Cathedral was formally dedicated in 1931.
The Altoona Cathedral is offering tours of this magnificent
