There will be a charity sew-in at the Bethel United Methodist Church on Saturday, January 11, 2020 from 9a-4p. We hope you can join us as we will be teaching a new technique on a quick and easy paper bag method for making a nontraditional yellow brick quilt. The guild will be providing the supplies for making these quilts. Please bring your machines as well as standard sewing supplies. Specific tools that will be helpful are a rotary cutter and mat as well as a ruler (minimum 12 ½” long). If you have a 6 ½” x 12 ½” ruler please bring it, but it is not required to make this quilt. If you have a stash of fat quarters you are interested in donating, please bring them as well. A small lap top quilt requires 6 fat quarters and a larger one requires 9. Instructions and paper bags will be provided. This is a fun activity and results in a scrappy quilt.

Throughout the day we will be pausing 3 or 4 times to learn a new skill. I am always looking for people who would like to share their skills and talents. Some of the areas of interest are learning to join pieces of batting, make hexies, mitering corners, ensuring a 1/4 seam, installing zippers, hand applique and how to make 1/2 square triangles. We have so many talented ladies in our group. Please contact me if you would like to share your knowledge during our workshops.

Lastly, lunch will be provided.  Barbara Williams and Hilda Laing have offered to provide chili and vegetable soup for lunch. The guild will add in some good crusty bread, cookies, and bottled water to round out the menu.

Hope to see you there!

CharitySew-inThe retreat this year will be called Quilting for the Holidays. It will be held

at the Comfort Inn off US Route 9 in Martinsburg, WV. As you enter theretreat, you will be handed a Welcome Bag full of amazing quiltinggoodies that we hope you enjoy. We will have many surprises that are top notch. There will be a store for cash money beginning Wednesdayafternoon and a funny money auction on Friday night. As we have seenat the meetings, Debbie has created baskets that are quite beautifuland full of amazing goodies that have been donated by several of ourguild members. The baskets will be photographed and cataloged so youknow what you are bidding on. Most of the baskets have quite a lot of

quilt store quality fabric in them. This is the time to spend your funny money for these fabulous baskets!

Kitten, Barb, and Janice have volunteered to help, and they are assembling small kits for different holidays that we hope you enjoy making. We also have lanyards made by Dee and Barb that will hold a name tag, your key card and a credit card. Irma Whitlock will be giving out funny money throughout the entire retreat. We will hold a drawing for a handmade green and white Hawaiian quilt. At the January meeting we will be giving out tickets to sell for a chance to win this beautiful quilt. Hilda is also donating a beautiful patriotic quilt for us to auction. After dinner on Saturday we will have the Chinese Gift Exchange. It’s a blast! Even though we have a $25 limit on gifts, you don’t have to buy a gift…handmade are the best and most sought after.

Dee Akers is overseeing the catered meals for Friday dinner and Saturday’s lunch and dinner. Breakfast is included with your hotel reservation (similar to the Best Western breakfast). There are also several restaurants around the Comfort Inn if you would prefer. Also worth noting is that there are refrigerators in each of the rooms.

In March you will receive your retreat book with directions to the hotel, timeline of events and lots of other pertinent information regarding the retreat. There is shopping on the way to Martinsburg, but unfortunately Traditions of the White Swan has closed. Wilson’s is still in Hagerstown. You might want to stop at the Cloth Peddler in Stephens City and the Scrappy Apple in Winchester on the way up. If you decide to go by Purcellville on your way up, you can stop at Web Fabrics.

If you have any direct questions, please text me at 540-272-8116. As always, if you want to volunteer for ANYTHING, please let me know!

Pam

Please don’t forget that your final retreat payment is due by March 30, 2020. If

On Saturday, January 18th we will have the second Barn Quilt Workshop. The workshop will be held at the Hebron Lutheran Church, 899 Blankenbaker Rd., Madison, VA from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The guild will be providing the brushes, masking tape, paint, and small jars. The paint colors available are red (two shades), yellow, blue, green, orange, purple as well as gray and brown.  If you have a specific color you would like please supply it or you can mix the paint we are providing to come up with your own unique color.

The last information I received from Vyvyan is the class is half full, so if you are interested please send in your registration. Vyvyan needs a minimum of a week to prepare for the class and with the holidays she may require longer so sooner is better.

Attendees should bring a lunch and a drink and makesure to wear old clothing.

Hope to see you there!
