General Information Use Table 1 to identify J1939 fault codes and an overview of the diagnostic procedure for fault codes generated by the bulkhead module (BHM), SA 33. Use Table 2 to identify J1587/J1708 BHM fault codes. J1587 fault codes consist of the following ele- ments in the order listed: Message Identifier (MID) – Identifies which electronic control unit (ECU) the fault is coming from. The J1587 MID identifying all BHM infor- mation faults is 164. Subsystem Identifier (SID) – Indicates what function on the ECU has failed. Failure Mode Indicator (FMI) – Indicates in what way the function failed. See Table 3 for a list of the J1587 failure mode indicators. Always use the appropriate schematic for the vehicle as different option content will modify which connec- tor and pin are actually used. BHM B1, A indicates that the typical circuit is BHM connector B1, pin A. J1587 fault codes are shown under J1708 in Service- Link. J1587 and J1708 are the same datalink proto- col. General InformationUse Table 1 to identify J1939 fault codes and anoverview of the diagnostic procedure for fault codesgenerated by the bulkhead module (BHM), SA 33.

Use Table 2 to identify J1587/J1708 BHM faultcodes. J1587 fault codes consist of the following ele-ments in the order listed:

• Message Identifier (MID) – Identifies whichelectronic control unit (ECU) the fault is comingfrom. The J1587 MID identifying all BHM infor-mation faults is 164.

• Subsystem Identifier (SID) – Indicates whatfunction on the ECU has failed.

598 7 Clutch switch fault

The top-of-clutch switch and bottom-of-clutch switch are bothmeasured as closed at the same time. Troubleshoot for clutchswitch shorted, or for a wiring fault between the clutch switchand the BHM. Engine starting is disabled and other optionalfunctions may be interrupted until the fault is corrected and theignition switch is cycled.

The BHM drives the 5 cab overhead clearance and ID lampsfrom connector B5, pin C on circuit 46. All other marker and taillamps are driven from BHM connector B1, K on circuit 23. Thiscircuit connects to the CHM as an input at connector J3, P. TheCHM passes the signal through to power the tail lamps andmarker lamps from connector C2, pin G and also fromconnector C1, pins D, E, and F. Troubleshoot for a wiring short-to-ground fault on any of the CHM output or BHM output circuitsdiscussed above. The fault remains active until the ignition isturned ON when the fault is no longer present. Some BHMconfigurations force this circuit off until the ignition switch iscycled.

The backlighting dimmer switch connects ground to circuit 29Cin the increase intensity position. It connects ground to circuit 29in the decrease intensity position. If both circuits are at ground,this fault is set.

The BHM measures the current on this circuit when the ACcompressor is commanded ON. This fault indicates the clutchcircuit is open or the wiring between the BHM and the ACcompressor clutch is high resistance or open.

BHM connector B6, A5 is at battery voltage for more than 30seconds and the key is in the ON position. The remote startswitch circuit 15D is at ground, and the remote start relay isactive. Troubleshoot the pneumatic remote start switch systemin trucks with a bucket lift, or the remote start switch applicableto the vehicle.

The ICU broadcasts the state of the turn signal indicators to theBHM. When this fault is active, the four-way flashers are on andthe ICU is not controlling the turn signal indicators according tothe BHM command. Replace the ICU.

6918 7 Missing smart switch

The BHM is not detecting the presence of all the smart switchesit is configured to have. Use ServiceLink to determine whichsmart switch is missing. From the BHM screen, click on the"Configuration" tab then click the "Check for Missing SmartSwitches" box. The switch ID will be missing from the SmartSwitch the vehicle is expected to have.

6919 7 Duplicate smart switch

The BHM is detecting more than one smart switch with thesame ID number present on the vehicle. The outputs controlledby the switch and the indicator in the switch are commandedOFF. The position information for the switch becomes NotAvailable. Remove the duplicate Smart Switch, then useServiceLink to verify that the correct Smart Switches areconfigured for the vehicle. From the BHM screen, click the"Features" tab. The reference parameters that configure theSmart Switches are identified in this list.

6920 7 Extra smart switch

The BHM is detecting one or more smart switches connected tothe vehicle that have not been configured with BHMparameters. Use ServiceLink to identify which Smart Switchesare configured for the vehicle. From the BHM screen, click the"Features" tab. The reference parameters that configure theSmart Switches are identified in this list. Determine if the extraswitch is not required for the vehicle or if the switch has beeninstalled but the necessary reference parameter has not beenprogrammed into the BHM.

6922 7 Wake up circuit faultThe wake up circuit is powered to a battery voltage circuit. Oneof the ECUs using circuit 14E is holding this circuit ON, or thereis a wiring fault. Use the procedure in service bulletin 54-266.

6923 7 Wiper park circuit fault

When the wiper switch is turned to the OFF position, the BHMexpects to see ground on the park switch circuit within 5seconds. This fault is set if ground is not detected. Troubleshootfor an open in circuit 317, or an open park switch in the wipermotor.

6924 19 Wiper switch ON/OFFlogic fault

The ICU reads the wiper switch position and sends the status ofthe switch to the BHM. This fault becomes active when the ICUreads that either the LO speed or HI speed is active when thewiper switch is also in the OFF position. Troubleshoot for ainoperative stalk switch.

6925 19 Wiper switch HI/LOlogic fault

The ICU reads the wiper switch position and sends the status ofthe switch to the BHM. This fault becomes active when the ICUreads that both LO speed and HI speed are active at the sametime. Troubleshoot for an inoperative stalk switch.

This faultindicates the wiper motor high speed circuit is open, or thewiring between the BHM and the wiper motor is open circuit.Test for an open wiper motor and use the schematic in module66B to assist troubleshooting the circuit.
