Dear friends,

On September 10th

I will be licensed as a Reader (used to be known as Lay

Reader) to work in the parishes of Shropshire North Six . I have reached

this step after lots of little ones taken to satisfy a thirst for learning and

the only end view being to be a better educated Sunday School teacher.

No-one could be more surprised than me to find that I will be donning

cassock and surplice and the blue Reader scarf to preach.

I would like to thank you all for the support that you have given me these

last few years. This last stage of the journey began with a deanery bible

study course to complete the Bishops Certificate. Bridget Hodges and

Malcolm Rigley were fellow students who progressed on to the next stage

of training, but I was happy just to keep meeting under the tutelage

of Rev Christopher Cooke and Canon William Price. Then Revd Judy

encouraged me to do the year-long Pathways course – a diocesan course

designed to explore lay ministry and to signpost training opportunities.

I was there for the learning - and good learning it was – particularly the

day led by the then Director of Reader Training. I wanted more!

The Pathways course ended with a quiet day. I found myself struck by

Jesus’ words to Peter recorded at the end of John’s gospel: ‘Feed my

sheep’. I suddenly felt that of all the parish roles I could potentially fulfil,

the role of Reader was one that I was perhaps suited to and that I would

also enjoy – except I still couldn’t see myself in the position of preacher!

With the support of our PCCs, I found myself accepted for the two year

training and happily prioritising every term time Wednesday evening and

one weekend a term for lectures and a fair amount of additional time to

study, essay writing and practical exercises. During those two years

I have come to enjoy leading worship and preparing sermons – thank you

for being gracious about my novice attempts.

As a licensed Reader my role will include being upfront on some

Sundays in any / all of the parishes, sharing the Junior Church teaching at

St Alkmunds and participation in other occasional courses and seasonal

services. I hope you will continue to engage with me, give me feedback

and support me as my journey continues. In my turn, I hope to be able to

encourage you as fellow travellers in the kingdom of heaven.

Yours in friendship

Jane Rylands

CELEBRATING OUR

VOLUNTEERS!

Through 2016 we want to thank

everyone who volunteers in any

way here at St Alkmund's. At

different times in the year we

have had services celebrating the

ministries of different groups.

The last of these will be on Sunday

18th September where we will be

celebrating and commissioning

those who reach out into the

communi t y on beha l f o f

the Church. This includes the

following ministries:

Those who help in schools –

Hospital chaplaincy team

Baptism visitors / welcomers

If you are part of any of these

groups we'd love to see you at one

of our services on Sunday 18th

September where we can thank

you properly! If you are not but

want to think about getting

involved then please speak to

Revd Judy or Revd Rich.

MESSY CHURCH

Messy Church is a mix of crafts,

activities, worship and food which

is for all ages but is especially

aimed at families. We will be

starting a Messy Church this

autumn with sessions on Sunday

25th

September and Sunday 27th

November, 4-5.30pm in Bargates

Hall. You can get involved by

helping with crafts and activities,

helping in the kitchen, coming to

chat to people, and especially by

bringing your family/friends. If

you would like more information

or to be involved please speak to

Revd Rich.

PILGRIM COURSE

The next module of The Pilgrim

BLACKBERRY FAIR

Whitchurch Blackberry Fair is on

Saturday 1st

October this year and

is a fantastic community event

but it can be extremely busy and

BIBLE STUDY GROUP

I do hope you have had a good

summer.

Pat and I went up to Keswick as

usual for the Keswick Christian

Convention. I’ve been going for 21

years. I did seven years in the

camper van, seven years bed and

breakfast and now seven years at

the Skiddaw hotel in the centre of

the town.

I was looking forward to the Bible

Study this year in particular as

the speaker was Steve Brady – a

fantastic speaker, but I didn’t know

what we were going to study until

I got up there. When I looked

down the programme for Week 2,

couldn’t believe my eyes, when I

saw it was to be – Revelations. As

I had asked my group at

St Alkmunds what they wanted to

study next, half of them said

Revelations, while the other half

wanted to look at the Letters

So, I’ve done a leaflet for studying

Revelations and then we’ll look

at the John’s Letters towards

Christmas.

The group meet each 2nd

and 4th

Wednesdays each month, so our

first meeting in September will be

14th

September, at 2.00pm in

Bargates Hall. Although we know

studying the Bible sounds as if we

are all solemn ‘beings’, and yes

we are, but we enjoy each others

company and really have a ‘fun’

time. If you would like to join us,

do come along and give us a try,

you will be very welcome. - we

have a lovely cuppa at the end with

some very scummy biscuits!

Hope to see you there, Celia.

THE CHILDREN’S SOCIETY

October is the official month for

completing the opening and

counting of our Children’s Society

boxes so I am getting this notice

in the September magazine to

remind you to bring your boxes

to church, and hand them to me,

or leave them in the Vestry where

they will be put in the safe until

I can collect them. Once the

contents have been counted, I will

put the boxes at the back of the

church for you to collect.

If you are unable to bring your box

to church, I will collect and return

it to your home.

I am away for a week at the end of

September so would appreciate

you bringing in your boxes as

soon as possible.

Thank you all for continuing to

support so generously this very

worth while cause.

If anyone would like to consider

having a box, please do contact

me, either at church or at home.

APPOINTED The governors are

very pleased to announce that they

have appointed Mrs Sarah Cope,

Senior Vice Principal at St Bart's

Trust, Stoke, based in the Crewe

area, to be the headteacher at

Whitchurch CE Infant and Nursery

School from September 2016.

While we are sad to be saying

goodbye to Mr Smallbone, we are

confident that Mrs Cope will build

on his success and continue to

provide an excellent education for

the children of Whitchurch.

SHROPSHIRE VIOLETS (see

front cover)

The following is an email sent to

Revd Judy a few weeks ago.

“I am disposing of stock from an

antique centre I used to have some

years ago. I have come across a

bottle of Shropshire violets (empty!)

a picture of your church is on the

front of the bottle. I am willing to

post it on to you if the church

would have any interest in it. It is

only 4" in height. Free, no charge!

Susan Blackwell from Devon”

We took Susan up on her offer and

are now trying to find information

about the bottle, pictured on the

front cover. The back of the bottle

is rather plain and just has the

words ‘Shropshire Violets’ on it,

the base has no makers name but

carries the mark ’A83’. If you have

ever seen one before or know

anything about it please let Jo Lavin

or Roly Wyatt know.

Lichfield Diocese covers a vast

area including Shropshire. He is

coming to St Alkmund’s on

Tuesday 20th September for a

service, including the Eucharist,

starting at 7.00pm. He would like

to meet local people over refresh-

ments at the end of the service. If

work or other commitments mean

that you’ll be a bit late arriving –

don’t worry – still come.

It would be helpful to have a vague

idea of numbers beforehand, so if

you think you’re likely to come,

please sign up on the list at the

back of one of the Shropshire

North Six Churches or let Revd

Judy know on 01948 667253 or

[email protected].

Wondering about being

Confirmed in the Church of

England?

To let you know that there will be

a Confirmation Service next year,

probably in St Alkmund’s,

Whitchurch, at 6.00pm on 15th

April (Easter Eve). If you were

baptised (christened) as a baby,

confirmation is about taking on

for yourself the promises made by

your parents and god-parents.

If you’re not yet baptised, then

baptism and confirmation can be

done at the same time. Those who

are confirmed then receive the

bread and wine at services of Holy

Communion.

For young people, confirmation is

open to those in school year 6 or

above. For adults – all ages are

We have so much to thank farmers for … They produce the food we eat. They care for the land. They

manage the countryside for our benefit.

And yet much of our farming community is

threatened and suffering Low incomes, increasing bureaucracy, high suicide levels,

depression, debts and farmers going out of business losing

their livelihood and the home for their family

Donations raised through the Harvest Appeal can really make a

difference. A donation of as little as £10 could pay for two hand-

pumps; a total of £200 could more than pay for a pump, providing

clean water for a whole Ugandan village. And a collection of £597

could train local people to maintain and fix a village water point in

Uganda, ensuring it works for the long term.

Since 1981, WaterAid has reached 23 million people with safe water

and, since 2004, 21 million people with sanitation. For more infor-

mation, visit www.wateraid.org, follow @WaterAidUK on Twitter, or

visit us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/wateraid.

Everyday millions go without the essential ingredient of safe

water. 38-year-old Aleper, who lives in a rural village in North

Eastern Uganda, has to make the journey to collect water with

her eldest daughter Teko Helen, three times a day. Aleper

and her daughter cannot bring enough water back from the

river to irrigate their crops. When the rains fail, so do their

hopes for Harvest.

The plan

With help from churches across the UK, we will transform the

village with a new borehole, bringing safe water to the whole

community. This will give them enough water to grow crops

of nutritious vegetables, ensuring their families no longer go

hungry

Around 315,000 children die each year from

diarrhoeal diseases caused by dirty water and poor

sanitation. That’s nearly 900 children each day,

or one child every two minutes.
