SPORT/DEBATING ETC PHOTOS - TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 11

Kirby Studio Photography will be taking various group photos of students on Tuesday September 11 for our school magazine. Students may be required to wear different uniforms in certain group photos.

If your child is in various groups (ie Choir and Netball) please send them with both their formal and sports uniforms on the day.

Uniforms required for different photo groups: Junior Singers, Choir, Band, Tech Group, Stage Crew, Debating, Qld Japanese Speakers, ICAS Science, Maths, English and Technology need to wear their FORMAL UNIFORMS. Sporting groups are required to wear their SPORTS UNIFORM. Met East, Bayside or Qld Rep teams, please bring your rep uniforms.

CLASS FORMATIONS 2019 I invite parents/guardians should they wish to, to write a letter addressed and in an envelope to The Principal, in relation to their child’s class placement in 2019. I would ask that these letters be sent in as a hard copy (as some emails tend to be blocked by our junkmail software). These letters must include seriously considered reasons for placement consideration. These reasons may include educational, relational (friendships) or emotional concerns. Please understand that this is not an avenue to state teacher preference as it is not known which teachers will be teaching particular grade levels next year. This is one stage of a process which involves teachers, support staff and school leadership. Parents/guardians need to consider that this is a very important and complex task and therefore one that staff approach with care and professionalism. All letters need to be addressed to The Principal. For 2019, it is the intention to have single year level classes from Prep to Yr 6 with 3 classes per year level. Classes will be formed before the end of Term 4 and students will be notified of their class and teacher during the last week of Term 4.

While consideration will be given to requests, the final decision will be made by the school and will remain fixed and unchanged. This is consistent with the process implemented since 2011 and I ask families to appreciate the high level of consideration and time that is dedicated to this task and respect and accept the final decision. The opportunity for families to write this letter will close at the end of this first week of Term 4 (Friday 12th October).

NEW STAFF MEMBER

We welcome Mrs Shantelle Miller to our administration team in the role of Student Services Secretary. I know you will warmly welcome Shantelle to our school office, as her family is already part of our St Anthony’s community.

APA NEWS - Mr Scott Murphy

This Sunday we remember and celebrate all the fathers and significant male figures in our lives. I’d like to share with you a great article by Michael Grose on what kids learn from fathers. A recent study conducted by Galaxy Research found that three quarters of Australian dads nominated their father as the person from whom they learned their most important life skills. Shaving, riding bikes, driving and changing tyres are the skills that men attributed to their dads.

At first glance these may not appear too st artling but dig a little deeper and you find that they attribute vital lifelong success characteristics to their dads. High work ethic, honesty, supportiveness and loyalty were all values that men directly attributed to their dads. The results of the study show that dad is the ‘doing’ guy. Mothers tend to interact with their kids differently. They are more verbal, more astute at developing interpersonal skills and more likely to reveal what is on their mind. The language of fatherhood is about activity – dads teach many of their important lessons through activity. Learning to be a good sport, to share and to work toward a goal are lessons that dads teach their kids in very hands-on ways. The study also showed that it was through activity that men formed their relationships with their dads. Playing, tinkering, building and pulling things apart are the modus operandi of many dads.

What do dads teach girls? Dads teach girls fundamental lessons about interacting with males.

As my girls were growing up I wanted them to expect to be treated well and respectfully by males (both present and future) as well as having the confidence to be assertive. That meant that I needed to treat my daughters kindly, while allowing them to speak up to me (in the nicest possible way) when needed.

Numerous studies have linked fathers with the healthy development of girls, including self-esteem and confidence.

Certainly, dads should complement their daughters genuinely and persistently in adolescence when body image doubts are very common. But they also need to let their daughters grow away. This is a challenge as dads tend to be protective of their daughters and hard on their sons.

It’s lucky then that most mums are protective and super-supportive of their boys!

The ying and yang that mothering and fathering provides is a fabulous balance for kids.

Boys grow into their dads Little boys want to be like their dads. They attribute superman-like qualities to their fathers. Dads need to make the most of this while they can because their sons become teenagers and try hard to reveal their feet of clay. The GOOD NEWS is that the Galaxy Survey showed that most men still want to be ‘like their dad.’ That boyhood dream doesn’t diminish in adulthood. That’s lucky as most men become like their fathers, hopefully better versions!

A better version of a father 2018 style appears to be one who is involved with his kids but also one who can balance and support the parenting style of his partner. A better version is one who plays with his kids but also one who disciplines too. He balances softness with firmness. A better version is not being a quasi mother or a gender-neutral parent but confident enough to learn from his partner while retaining the maleness of fathering. A better version is one who talks openly to his partner and engages in a dialogue about parenting. A better version is one who remembers what it was like being a kid and bringing that into parenting as much as possible when you are with them.

And fathers need partners who support them in their parenting efforts, actively share the parenting enterprise, and recognise that Dads Do It Differently.

Traffic, Parking and Morning Routines We are a large school and as such need to impose some order on the procedure for traffic. The procedure is set down to ensure the safety of your child. Parents using Babiana and Title Streets as pick up points are asked to be considerate of resident neighbours by not parking in driveways or double parking. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES ARE CARS PERMITTED TO PARK IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS:-

> Directly in front of the Parish Hall

> No stopping or parking on pedestrian crossings

> Church and the far side of the bitumen car park opposite the Hall

> In the bus parking bays

> In the Emergency Vehicle bays

> In the Disabled Parking bays (unless you have a permit)

These are to be kept free as a bus thoroughfare at all times between 8.00am and 4.00pm. Also, you will notice on the road there are yellow line markings, which indicate you cannot park. Entry to the bottom car park is via the Western side of the hall. The carriageways in and out must at all times be left clear. Please drive carefully and slowly in the grounds as children’s lives are at stake. Crossing Supervisors are in attendance from 8.00am to 8.45am and 2.35pm to 3.20pm each day to supervise children crossing Babiana Street. A reminder also that supervision of students does not begin until 8:00am. Once the supervising staff member permit students to go up to the main school area Yrs 1-6 students drop their bags at their classroom and all Preps who are left at drop off without a parent, are to move up to the Year 4 seats and sit or play on the grassed area outside of Year 1.

Have a great week, Scott

APRE NEWS - Mrs Kellie Jacobsen

Super exciting news for the St Anthony's Parish and School - 2018 Division 8 Winner for our Inspiring Senior is Pamela Boyle. Pamela was nominated for this award by a member of St Anthony's School, Alexandra Hills, who was very grateful for the hard work and commitment that Pamela puts into the school Mass and reading to students every Thursday. Pamela has been involved and volunteering for St Anthony's and St Luke's Church in Capalaba for 15 years. Pamela sets up for Mass and transports Redlands residents to and from. Pamela is also involved with Baden Powell Guild, a group of previous leaders in scouts/guides who assist our local Redland Guide groups. They assist other Redland organisations such as Maybank, Lions and the homeless with making blankets and beanies. Pamela has been volunteering and assisting people in Wynnum and Redlands with simple tax returns for the last 27 years, helping older people and those who don't use a computer. Would you please ensure that Pamela receives the recognition within the Church Bulletin and School Newsletter that she deserves, it was my privilege to support Pamela's application and award.

FATHER’S DAY Father’s Day has become a day of celebration in almost all countries around the world. It has become a day not to only honour our dads, but all men who act as a father figure. Stepfather’s, uncles, grandfathers, and other significant adult males are honoured on ‘Father’s Day.’ Father’s Day is also an opportunity to reflect on our ‘heavenly Father’. The mystery of the Holy Trinity presents us with three images of God – God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. Pope Francis, once again provides us with these wise words regarding God the Father.

“Dear brothers and sisters,” Pope Francis said, “we are never alone.” Even when we are distant or even hostile to God, even when we might claim to be “without God,” God the Father does not remain distant from us: “He will never be a God ‘without man.’” This providential plan of God is a great mystery. Whatever our needs, whatever our problems, the Pope reminded us that God is our Father, who is always watching over us with love, a Father who will never abandon us.” (7/6/17)

We pray for all father figures.

God our loving Father, at this special time of the year we pause to give thanks for our dads, uncles, grandfathers and other special males in our lives. May your Holy Spirit constantly inspire them with justice and mercy, wisdom and strength, patience and self-giving love. May they receive Your grace abundantly, and may they come to experience you through the

care and love they give to the children in their care. Amen.

SOCIAL JUSTICE INITIATIVE TERM 3 - LET'S HELP THE FARMERS! For our social justice action this term we have decided to raise money to assist our struggling farmers. This will be in week 9. More details will be shared in next week's newsletter.

MIGRANT WEEK The Parish held a wonderful Multi-Cultural evening on Saturday night. Food from various cultures was shared, dances and songs were presented and 211 people joined us on the night. Thank you to those families who were at the evening. It was a great success! Last week the Pope recognised the 104th World Day of Migrants and Refugees. Catholic Social Justice teachings inform us that we are all welcome in the Church and that all people have the right for a safe and dignified life in their homeland. Tragically, over 45 million people around the world are displaced. In our society we can welcome migrants and refugees and recognise them as a dignified humans by simply greeting them. Let us continue to pray for all refugees and migrants in our world today.

QCMF SUCCESS FOR CHOIRS AND BAND

St Anthony’s choirs and band competed in the annual Queensland Catholic Colleges Music Festival. It was a very successful day. The Junior Singers and the band were both awarded a Gold in their respective sections and the Senior Choir were awarded a Silver in their very competitive section. All students had a great day, and with exemplary behaviour were a credit to St Anthony’s. A big thank to everyone who assisted in the lead up to the festival, and on the day – staff and parents. It is a big commitment to be involved in choir or band with many before school rehearsals for Senior groups. Thank you parents for helping to get your child to school on time on rehearsal days. To all the St Anthony’s staff especially the leadership team, thank you for your encouragement and support, especially with all the organising that goes into an event like this. Our musical groups are a credit to our school. To all the St Anthony’s students – thank you for your commitment and hard work – you will have great musical memories of your time at St Anthony’s. The choirs will also be singing this Friday at Assembly and all students will receive their certificates (and ribbons from the Redlands eisteddfod) on assembly this Friday 31st August. PARISH NEWS

VOLUNTEERS URGENTLY NEEDED

We sincerely thank our parishioners for the wonderful send-off organized for Deacon Ray at the end of his ministry in our parish. Apart from the tea after each Mass on his last weekend with us, we also had a luncheon for him the following Wednesday. The parish office staff too had lunch with him on Friday, which was his birthday. The gift he received from our parish was a Flight Centre Voucher to enable him to visit the Philippines, where he was born. Deacon Ray sincerely appreciates the goodwill we extended to him and has not stopped expressing his gratitude.

Unknown to most of us, apart from joining us at Masses and preaching, there were other tasks that Deacon Ray undertook very quietly. Among them was his role as the Parish Safeguarding Representative. When the Archdiocese created this position for parishes a few years ago, parishes were encouraged to make use of volunteers, but Deacon Ray generously volunteered to do it. The core of this task is maintaining a parish Safeguarding Implementation and Compliance Folder. The position reports directly to the Parish Secretary and does not involve any direct dealings with parishioners. Another thing that Deacon Ray did for us was representing our parish in the Deanery Pastoral Council.

While the former requires no more than two hours a fortnight, either at the Parish Office or at home, the second involves attending a one and half hour meeting with the Dean and representatives from other parishes in our deanery once every four months. Can any parishioners who could fulfil any of these tasks kindly contact the parish office for further explanation? This will be greatly appreciated.

God Bless, Fr Emmanuel

6M & 6N Class Mass

This Thursday 30th August we will be celebrating 9am Class Mass with 6M & 6N. Parents are most welcome to attend.

Have you ever thought of learning more/joining the Catholic Church? Perhaps you already attend Church but have not received sacraments? Or perhaps you know someone who may be interested? If so, please come to an Information Night to be held on Wednesday 29th August at 7.30pm. It will be held in our Par ish Meeting Room (building behind St Anthony’s Church). Please call Margaret at the Parish Office to express your interest in attending (catering purposes).
