THE LAW OF FAST AND ABSTINENCE IN THE DIOCESE

OF FORT WORTH

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has

determined that the following practices shall prevail in the United States: Fast and Abstinence are to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all those who have celebrated

their 18th birthday until one has celebrated his/her 59th birthday. Abstinence from meat is to be observed on the Fridays of Lent by all who have celebrated their 14th birthday.

The Church recognizes that there are chronically or seriously ill individuals who cannot fast or abstain. The Church still calls for these individuals to participate in acts of penance and works of charity. These can be performed throughout the

we4ek; however, it is especially appropriate that these acts be performed on Fridays in place of the Friday fast.

No one can be dispensed from the necessity of doing penance.

Catholics are strongly urged to practice voluntary acts of mortification and works of charity. The bishops of the United States have urged Catholics to consider abstaining from meat

on Fridays “as a tangible sign of our need and desire to do

penance for the cause of peace.”

DIOCESAN PRAYER FOR RAIN

God our Creator, maker of all things and protector of your people, in your love look upon us in our time of need and give

us your help. Open the heavens for us and send us the rain we need for our lives and crops. As our hearts long for you, so we seek rain to refresh the earth; as we long for life, so let the

earth produce its harvest in abundance. May we rejoice in the good things of the earth and raise our eyes to you the source of all blessings. Hear our cry for mercy and answer our

prayer, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

PREVENTING THE FLU AND OTHER COMMUNICABLE DISEASES. Good health habits can help stop germs, in addition to receiving the flu shot if you are able.

1. Avoid close contact. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.

2. Stay home when you are sick. If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness.

3. Cover your mouth and nose. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.

4. Clean your hands. Washing your hands often with soap and water is most effective (Center for Disease Control-Atlanta).

5. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs are

often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose or mouth.

6. Practice other good health habits. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food. Let us continue to pray for our

communities and the families that are affected by influenza and other communicable diseases.
