Memorial Day Service At Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens

And Flag Display

In Desoto County, Catholics comprise less than 5% of our community but you would not know it

from the public activities of the Knights of Columbus Assembly 2195 and in particular the patriotic

activities we do for Memorial Day each year.

On May 29, 2017 approximately 300 members, including active servicemen and women, local civic

leaders and family members of deceased members of our military will gather at Twin Oaks Memo-

rial Gardens(290 Goodman Rd East). The memorial service begins inside the chapel at 10AM with

prayer and speaker presentations and then outdoor flag raising ceremony. Eight Sir Knights of As-

sembly 2195 participated last year in regalia during the indoor service and outside during the flag

raising ceremony serving during both parts as the Honor Guard. In 2016 one of the two guest

speakers was Allen Latimer, the current Mayor of Horn Lake, MS and a member of Council 7120.

Our participation in the Memorial Day service culminates our weekend activities which also in-

cludes setting up over 600 flags on the grounds of our four Catholic churches. Flags will be set up

at Christ the King on Saturday May 27th at 9:00AM and put away during the week following Me-

morial Day. We invite all family members and members f our Council to help with the flag display

so we can teach our youth to develop a love for our country and respect for the flag. Later this

month we will send out more information about setting up flags at other churches—anyone inter-

ested in helping please contact me so we can help make sure flags are displayed at Holy Spirit, St

Gregory and Good Shepherd.
