Pan-African low cost carrier fastjet has announced a proposed capital raising to raise gross proceeds of £15 million through the issue of new ordinary shares and additional gross proceeds of up to approxi-mately £4.2 million. This is a fresh strategy under new chief executive Nico Bezuidenhout who takes office on August 1.

2015 was a challeng-ing year for fastjet, in which the airline encountered difficult macroeconomic con-ditions in its markets, delays in obtaining flying rights into Kenya, and new international routes performing be-low expectations, as well as various changes to executive management and its board. These challenges contributed to the disappointing fi-

Since the launch of fastjet Tanzania in 2012, fastjet has carried over two million passengers. In 2015, over 775,000 passengers were carried, a 30% increase on the prior year.

Boeing forecasts demand for 1,850 new airplanes in India

Boeing forecasts a demand for 1,850 new air-planes in India, valued at US$265bn, over the next 20 years. The company released its annual Current Market Outlook (CMO) for India on July 19, during a briefing in Mumbai. “India contin-ues to have a strong commercial aerospace mar-ket and the highest domestic traffic growth in the world,” said Dinesh Keskar, Senior Vice Presi-dent, Asia Pacific and India Sales, Boeing Com-mercial Airplanes. “With the new aviation poli-cies in place, we see even greater opportunities and remain confident in the market and the air-lines in India.” According to Boeing’s CMO, sin-gle-aisle airplanes such as the Next-Generation 737 and 737 MAX will continue to account for the largest share of new deliveries, with airlines in India needing approximately 1,560 airplanes. These new airplanes will continue to support the growth of low-cost carriers and replace older,

a trading loss for 2016.

Following a review of the company’s financial performance in 2015 and scrutiny of its operations, the board’s revised business plan which in-cludes input from the new CEO, Nico Bezuidenhout, initially prioritises the initiatives required to stabilise the business in the short term. These include continuing with the cost reduction programme and ensuring careful management of the company’s current cash resources, rational-ising routes to match capacity with demand and paring back expansion, with no new routes expected to launch for the remainder of 2016. A more flexible approach to the traditional low cost carrier model will also be employed. Better alignment of the company’s infrastructure and fleet to its stage of development and ensuring overheads are ap-propriate for the size of fastjet’s operations is essential, in the board’s opinion, to achieving the desired improvement in cost management.

Although the ongoing cost reduction programme and the recent reduc-tion in routes and fleet size are yielding material benefits the Group continues to be cash flow negative. Accordingly the funds raised from this proposed placing will provide the Group with essential working capital and importantly the resources to effect the necessary changes to operations and fleet, to reduce costs further and pursue revenue generating initiatives. In addition, funds received from the open offer

will allow the Board additional flexibility as they execute their new busi-ness plan.

With funding in place, the Board will implement its revised business plan and expects to see future growth as markets improve.

Switzerland-based Vertis Aviation has added a Bombardier Challenger 350 to its South African portfolio. The brand new aircraft, which is only the second of its type to be delivered to the con-tinent, is based in Johannesburg, South Africa at OR Tambo International Airport. It joined the portfolio in June 2016 when it was delivered to Fireblade Aviation, a South African-based char-ter operator and FBO provider. With a potential range of 3200nm, the super-midsized aircraft is ideally placed to meet the growing demand for transcontinental African travel. It is anticipated that the Challenger 350 will prove popular not only with leisure customers, but with interna-tional business travelers needing to benefit from easy access to meetings and roadshows across the continent.

Aviation Partners’ latest winglet design, the Split Scimitar Winglet, uses existing blended winglet technology but adds new aero-dynamic Scimitar tips and a large ventral strake, further increasing the efficiency of the airplane. The Split Scimitar Winglet modification reduces Boeing Next-Generation 737 fuel burn by an ad-ditional 2.5% over the blended winglets alone; together they reduce fuel burn by up to 6.6%. The Split Scimitar Winglet System will reduce ya-kutia’s annual fuel requirements by more than 150,000 liters per aircraft, and their carbon di-oxide emissions by about 380 tonnes per aircraft per year. Additionally, the Split Scimitar Winglet System can increase payload capability by 1.2 tonnes on Yakutia’s longest routes.

United Airlines reports second-quarter 2016 performance

For the second quarter of 2016, United Air-lines reported total revenue was US$9.4bn, a decrease of 5.2% year-over-year. Second-quarter 2016 consolidated passenger revenue per available seat mile (PRASM) decreased 6.6% and consolidated yield decreased 6.1% compared to the second quarter of 2015. The decline in PRASM continues to be driven by factors including a strong u.S. dollar, lower surcharges, travel reductions from customers impacted by declining oil prices, competitive

actions and higher-yielding demand not keep-ing pace with industry capacity. Including spe-cial items, uAL reported second-quarter net income of US$588m and pre-tax earnings of US$931m. During the second quarter of 2016, the company repurchased US$694m of its common stock, representing 4.4% of shares outstanding. In July, the company’s Board of Directors authorized an additional US$2bn share repurchase program.

Boeing to recognize cost reclassification and charges to second-quarter earnings

Boeing reported it will recognize an impact to earnings across three programs when it announces second-quarter 2016 results on July 27. On the 787 program, the company decided not to invest funds for the refurbish-ment and sale of the two remaining unsold flight test aircraft that were scheduled to be introduced into the modification line. These two aircraft were produced in 2009 and have

been used extensively for flight and ground testing, with both airplanes achieving more than 6,700 flight and ground testing hours combined. Costs associated with these aircraft were reclassified from 787 program inventory to research and development expense result-ing in a non-cash after-tax charge of US$847m. To account for current and anticipated weak-ness in the air cargo market, the company plans to continue producing 747-8 aircraft at a rate of 0.5 per month and no longer in-crease the production rate to 1.0 per month in 2019. An US$814m after-tax charge on the 747 program reflects a lower estimated total of 747-8 Freighter aircraft to be produced in the program accounting quantity and lower estimated revenues on future aircraft sales. The company will also recognize a US$393m after-tax charge on the KC-46 Tanker program. This charge reflects higher costs associated with previously announced program schedule and technical challenges, including implemen-tation of the hardware solution to resolve the refueling boom axial load issue identified dur-ing flight testing, delays in the certification

process and concurrency between late-stage development testing and initial production. In total, the company will record an after-tax earnings impact of US$2.1bn. On a pretax ba-sis at the segment level, Boeing Commercial Airplanes will now record an earnings impact totaling US$2.78bn and the Boeing Military Aircraft segment of Boeing Defense, Space & Security will report an earnings impact of US$219m.

EBITDA (excess of revenues over expenses before financial expenses, income taxes, deprecia-tion and impairment of property and equip-ment) totalled CAD$62.3m for the second quarter of 2016, a rise of CAD$3.2m, or 5.4%

FINANCIAL NEWSLufthansa Group, Honeywell Aerospace and Airbus have signed a Memorandum of Under-standing (MOU) to work jointly on the devel-opment of a runway safety solution combining Airbus’ Runway Overrun Prevention System (ROPS) and Honeywell’s SmartLanding tech-nologies for Lufthansa Group’s fleet. This co-operation aims to set the highest standard in runway safety by combining the strengths of these two innovative and leading technologies and by making them available for a maximum number of aircraft types. Lufthansa will place its expertise at the service of Honeywell and Airbus respectively by contributing to the so-lution design and evaluation with the involve-ment of flight crews from the early stage of development. ROPS is a performance-based alerting system developed by Airbus which assists crews in preventing runway overruns. Certified by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), Federal Aviation Administra-tion (FAA) and Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), ROPS is in operation on ap-proximately 430 aircraft, including the A320, A330, A350 and A380, and has been selected by operators of 1,500 aircraft to be delivered. Honeywell’s SmartLanding system reduces the risk of runway excursion by alerting pilots if the aircraft is approaching the runway too high, too fast or is not configured properly for landing. SmartLanding is a software enhance-ment to Honeywell’s Enhanced Ground Prox-imity Warning System (EGPWS), installed on more than 30,000 airline and business aviation aircraft. Through a simple software upgrade to EGPWS, SmartLanding improves pilot situ-ational awareness and helps break the chain of events that can lead to a runway excursion, by providing aural and visual alerts upon ap-proach only if the aircraft has not met estab-lished safety criteria.
