2011 Amite WarriorsHead Coach: Alden Foster2009 Record: 10-3Starters Returning: 14 (7-offense / 7-defense)District: 8-3ACoach Alden Foster is looking for another

district 8-3A Title in 2011 after the Warriors fi nished their district slate without a blemish in 2010. Foster and his Warriors are hoping to take another step as far as the post season is concerned.

“Expectations are always high for us at Amite. We realize the tradition our program has, and the coaches and players embrace the tradition and, we feel a sense of responsibility to keep the tradition going in the right direction,” Fos-ter said.

The Warriors return 14 starters in 2011, seven players return to the Warriors offense as well as seven on defense. Foster is hoping that his vet-eran group can push his club deeper in to the Class 3A post season after a big loss in the 2010 state quarter-fi nals against West Feliciana.

One key for the Warriors offense will be the play of their offensive line. Three starters re-turn, led by big James Pea Milton. Fred Glov-er is back, as well as Offensive Tackle Devon Johnson. Jarvis Daniels and Center Blake Dugar round out the offensive line for Amite.

The primary receiving threats for Amite in-clude Samuel Richardson, Josh Gibson and Jer-maine Jolla. Amite does have the luxury of hav-ing an experienced offensive backfi eld back in the fold this season.

Quarterback Reginald Porter is back, along with Running Backs James Oden and Jarvis Saulsberry after all three had breakout seasons for the Warriors in 2010. The Warriors defense will have to try and fi nd someone to replace Donald “Bear” Pennington.

Bear Pennington was the league MVP last sea-son, but now he is playing for the University of Memphis Tigers. But all is not bad as Amite does bring back seven starters to their defense this season.

“We lost some solid players from last season but we feel like we have some very good play-ers back and some younger guys that just need some playing time,” said Warriors Coach Alden Foster.

The Warriors defense features solid play-ers on their defensive line at linebacker and in their defensive secondary as well. Up front, the Warriors are led by James Milton and Tarius Autmon. The defensive ends are Djuan Lee and Carlton Gray.

The Warriors bring back two of the best line-backers in district 8-3A this season. Juwaan Rogers returns after having his best season as a Warrior in 2010, and Amite also welcomes back line backer Albert Gardner. Chester Brumfi eld will also start at linebacker for the Warriors.

The Amite secondary is also loaded with ex-perience and talent. Other returning starters include Reginald Porter, Josh Burton and Chris-tian Cotton and the lone new face in the sec-ondary is Reginald Bennett.

The Warriors should be atop of the district

again this season along with Independence and possibly Loranger. But, can Amite make another deep run in the Class 3A Playoffs? Well, Amite could know the answer to that question by the opponents they face in the regular season.

The Warriors non-district slate includes 5A Ponchatoula, 4A Hammond and defending 4A Champ Franklinton. Should the Warriors do well in those games Amite might be able to make another deep run in Class 3A this season.

Foster’s looking for another title

2011 Independence TigersHead Coach: Keith Carona2010 Record: 7-5Starters Returning: 16 (7-offense / 9-defense)District: 8-3AThe 2010 prep football season was not a

normal one for the Independence Tigers. The Tigers had a disappointing 6-4 regular sea-son record but they were able to turn things around and pick up a 3A playoff win before be-ing knocked out in the second round, fi nishing with an overall record of 7-5.

“We took a lot of lumps last season, but now we have more experience on each side of the ball and we are expecting to be a better team

this season,” said Tigers Head Coach Keith Carona. Carona enters his 11th year as head coach of the Tigers.

The Tigers have a lot of veteran players back this season, and Coach Carona and his staff are looking forward to picking up more wins in 2011. The Tigers have a total of 16 starters back this season.

The Independence offense will have seven re-turning starters, while the Tigers defense fea-tures a whopping nine returning starters. “We feel like our defense has a chance to be really good. At times last year we played lights out on that side of the ball and now we are looking to be more consistent overall as a team,” Carona

said.Looking at the Tigers 2011 roster, with much

improvement this season Independence will be a very hard team to stop on offense. The Tigers return seven players back on offense this sea-son and eight of their current projected eleven starters are all underclassmen.

Things start off with veteran Quarterback Os-car Briggs. Last season, as a sophomore, Briggs showed signs of being a very good player as he racked up close to 1000 yards of total of-fense. When Briggs is not making plays look for the Tigers to hand the ball off to Running Back Miquel Toefi eld.

Toefi eld is one of the better running backs

in the area and he is poised to have a breakout season for Independence. Three of the Tigers fi ve interior offensive linemen are back this sea-son, which is very good news!

Center Jayce Genco returns, as do Guards Jason Davis and Garrett Vitrano. The tackles are new faces up front in Jarrett Gilmore and Josh Puma. Shannon Cage will also help in the Tigers backfi eld, and the Tigers pass catching trio includes Split Ends Quentin Jackson, Seth Burkhalter and Tight End Ryan Petit.

While the Tigers offense comes together, their defense is sound and ready to roll. With nine starters back this season, look for the Ti-gers to hold their opponents down in 2011. The 4-2-5 scheme implemented by longtime Defen-sive Coordinator Mike Young will be very tough to move the ball on this season.

Three of the Tigers front four are back in De-fensive End Decorion Brown and both defensive tackles are back with Tyrone Dinet and Darrion

Briggs in the fold. JerQuavis McGee is at the other defensive end position.

Both linebackers are back in Michael Toefi eld and Devin Coney, while the Tigers defensive secondary is stacked as well with four return-ing starters. Quentin Jackson, Brandon Bella-zen, Seth Burkhalter and Steven Wright bring play making skills and experience to the Tigers secondary while the lone newcomer is Nicolas Hurst.

Independence has beefed up their non-district schedule in each of the last fi ve seasons and this year is no different. The Tigers will square off against the likes of Baker, 4A playoff squad East Jefferson and Class 3A semi-fi nalist from last season - West Feliciana.

Independence will once again contend with rival Amite for the District 8-3A Title, but look for the Tigers to advance further in the post season in 2011 regardless of how they fi nish in district play.

that they are known for - the championship level! The Dean of Coaches in Tangipahoa Parish and one of the longest tenured coaches in the state of Louisiana knows he has a very good club this season.

Coach David Currier enters his 24th year at Kentwood High and Currier himself knows that expectations are much higher “Under the Tank” this season. The Roos are coming out of a 6-4 season in which Kentwood reached the Class 1A playoffs.

The Roos are the most successful programs in the Parish’s history with seven state titles to their credit. And, in 2011, many fans and people who are close to the Kentwood Football Program feel like these Roos can

make a run at the Class 1A Title in 2011.With a total of 18 starters back this season,

Kentwood looks to battle with longtime ri-val Southern Lab in the district and then land somewhere in the top half of the Class 1A pow-er ratings.

Kentwood battled Amite, falling to the War-riors 12-7, in the 2011 Tangilena Jamboree and now Kentwood is ready to focus on the rest of the season. On offense, the Roos have a tre-mendous playmaker back under center.

Harlan Miller enters his senior season as one of the best overall players in Class 1A. Miller was an all-district selection last year and now he looks to add to his touchdown total of 15 a year ago.

Miller passed for eleven touchdowns and rushed for four more while racking up over 1000 yards in total offense. Miller has plenty of talent around him on the Kentwood Offense.

The Roos return four of their fi ve interior Of-fensive Linemen this season to help pave the way for the Roos skilled people. Tackles Dan-travion Burton and Xavier Johnson are back, as well as Guards William Powell and big Jay Nich-olas, and are giving the Roos solid leadership and veteran play in the middle of the o-line.

Xavier Diamond will anchor the line at Center. The Roos have an experienced set of wide re-

ceivers that should benefi t greatly from the re-turn of Quarterback Harlan Miller. Tracey Davis, Trey Dunn and Rodney Clark give the Roos big play making skills in the passing game, along with Running Backs Demarco Diamond and Jaquavis Roberts.

Over on defense, look for Kentwood to be even more aggressive against their opponents as the Roos gladly welcome back nine starters this season. The 4-4 scheme has solid players back up front on their line, at linebacker and also in the defensive secondary.

Defensive End Torandon Watson is back to lead the d-line. Defensive Tackle Jay Nichols is also back after having a breakout season in 2010. Defensive Tackle Bryan Brumfi eld joins Nichols in the middle of the line and Jay Dicker-son is the other defensive end.

The Roos linebackers include Rodney Wil-liams and Jarvis Brown in the middle while Jor-don Taylor and Jerry Prewitt are both at outside linebacker. The Roos secondary features cor-nerbacks Tywandre McGee and Deandre Tate while the Tracey Davis is at safety.

Kentwood looks ready to compete for the 1A

Title. The team opens the non-district portion of their schedule with the likes of Bogalusa, Sumner, St. Helena, Loranger and fellow 1A power St. John.

Then, the Roos open their district 7-1A sched-ule on the road at Varnado and wrap up district play at home versus CLA and rival Southern Lab. If the Roos stay healthy and improve from week to week this could be a special season for Kent-wood. And “special” in K-Town means winning a title!

SWMCC boast Tangipahoa Parish playersThe start of the 2011 football season is fast ap-

proaching and Southwest Mississippi Community College head coach Charles Anthony has his squad hard at work preparing for a grueling campaign.

The Bears have seven total starters returning from last year’s 4-5 team so, while having plenty of over-all experience back, they will have to rely in large part on freshmen.

Anthony said that one of the keys to improving on last season is, “how fast (those) freshmen can mature and how fast we can jell them into a team.”

“One thing freshmen have to adjust to,” Anthony said, “is the length of the game (15 minute quarters as compared to 12 in high school) and (the fact that) every guy in front of you is as good or better than you every snap.”

Back from last season are quarterback Vintavi-ous Cooper. Anthony said Cooper has been a team leader and has been sharp during pre-season camp while Brian Cook, of Independence, has been the leaders with the receiving corps. Anthony said Sum-ner High School’s Tai’ Ron Norman has improved at quarterback and will be the likely backup to Cooper.

Anthony said he was also expecting a big things out of freshmen receivers Tonnie Collins and Jemer-ick Jordan, both of North Pike, and Terrance Evans. He also said that Chris Cooley and Renard Williams have also looked good at receiver.

Looking to share the load at running back are newcomers Donnell Dunigan as well as Indepen-dence High School’s Marshall Bellazen, Tylertown’s Ashton Elzey and North Pike grad Laderick Turner. Anthony said Chris Hughes, of McComb, also had a good camp.

On the line, Anthony said Dannie Polk and Jason Wells are battling for the right tackle position while sophomore Rico Cole and Garrett Watts are looking to fi ll the right guard spot.

On the left side, either returnee Anthony Parozzo of Ponchatoula High School or freshman Spencer Stovall will start at tackle while Jordan Martin and Oak Forest Academy’s Sawyer Wynn look to fi ll the spot at guard. Starting at center will be either soph-omore Ryan Triplett or freshman Jason Chiasson.

Returning as punter is Justin Holt while Tanner Ryals will handle the placekicking duties.

On the defensive side of the ball, Anthony said sophomores Ken Brown of Tylertown and Josh Man-ning will start at cornerback with Floyd Barnes, Jose Patterson and sophomore Chris Searight serving as backups.

Fidel Montgomery and Ontario Berry will hold down the free and strong safety spots, respectively, while Tylertown’s Deon Howard is at rover. Prob-able backups at free safety will be Brennan Dunklin, Jarvis Young at strong safety and Davin Mitchell at rover.

David Way looks to have nailed down one of the end spots with the other still open. A four-way bat-tle for the nose position is underway between Der-riccho Hardaway, Wilkinson County’s Edrick Hen-yard, Justin Proctor and Lesean Spann.

Tony Johnson has established himself as the “mike” linebacker with Raheem Robinson the lead-er at the “bandit” spot. Oak Forest’s Alex Rimes and McComb graduate Jed Rogers are also in the run-ning at linebacker.

Anthony said he felt like “we have the chance

to be much improved (over last year). Our biggest strength is our attitude and work ethic. We had a really good camp and our kids have as good an at-titude as I’ve been around since I’ve been the head coach here.” The team weakness at this point, he said, “is our inexperience. But, I’m really excited about this team.”

Anthony has put Gulf Coast (NCJAA pre-season #2) as the team to beat in the MACJC South Divi-sion this year followed by Pearl River (NJCAA #8), Co-Lin (#19), Jones County, Hinds and East Central.

Anthony put Northwest (NJCAA pre-season #9) as the team to beat in the North Division. The Bears will face the Rangers in week six of the season.

Anthony (Athens State, ’80) is in his sixth season as head coach and defensive coordinator for the Bears. Also returning on the sidelines are receivers coach Paul Dancsisin (Millsaps, ’73), offensive co-ordinator David Thornton (UAB, ’95), offensive line coach Jason Underwood (UT-Martin, ’01) and defen-sive backs coach Jonathan Webster (Arkansas Tech, ’08).

The Bears open the season on September 1 when they host Holmes. Anthony said that the “fi rst game is always an unknown even when playing against someone (a coach) who’s been there”, but with the Bulldogs new head coach Jeff Koonz and virtually all new assistant coaches, Anthony said “you know what to anticipate they’ll do, but you can’t be sure. They (Holmes) can watch fi lm and get a better feel for us than we can for them.”

IT’S FOOTBALL TIME!!

2011 Loranger WolvesHead Coach: Sam Messina2010 Record: 8-4Starters Returning: 17 (8-offense / 9-defense)District: 8-3AWow! After and 0-10 season, the Loranger

Wolves came up with eight wins in 2010 which was one of the best turn arounds in the Gulf South. Now, folks are very excited again about Loranger football, and Coach Sam Messina knows he has his program clearly in the right direction.

“A lot of people have put in a lot of hard work for us to get the program to this point. We are not where we want to be yet, but we are much closer than we were two years ago,” Messina said. Messina and his Wolves are expected to

be legit contenders, along with traditional pow-ers Amite and Independence, for the 2011 Dis-trict 8-3A Title.

The Wolves not only won eight games last season, but they picked up a huge playoff win over the always tough St. James Wildcats. Then, the Wolves went on to fall in the regional round of the playoffs to eventual state champion Parkview Baptist.

But, that was then and this is now and Mes-sina knows that team will be looking to knock off his club this season. “We can’t worry about what happened in the past. We have to focus on this season and take things week by week,” he said.

Messina enters his tenth season with 17 start-ers returning and one of the best players in

the state is in that number. Junior Jeryl Brazil is back and he has already committed to play for the LSU Tigers even though he has two full seasons left with the Wolves.

Brazil has become one of the best overall ath-letes in the state and his skills are as good as anyone in the district, and perhaps the state as well. But make one thing clear, Brazil does not make up the entire team by himself.

This Wolves club has plenty of play makers, and Brazil should be able to help open things up for some of his teammates again this sea-son. Eight players are back on offense and the Wolves will look to rack up even more yards and points in 2011.

The Loranger offensive line includes Tack-les Shaquille McClain and Hunter Hughes, the

Loranger’s program seems to be headed in the right direction

Page 33: Fast & Furious - Football 2011

guards are Waylon Prevost and Gar-ret Adams, and the starting Center is Cole Dubret. Tight end Mark Cox is back for his senior season as well for the Wolves.

The skilled players include Brazil, quarterback BJ Rainey and split end Jonathan King. Rainey will be much better this season, and King is one of the area’s top returning targets in 2011. Jake Ingraffi a is back at wide receiver and Jason Licciardi will help in the backfi eld as well.

The Wolves defense made a dras-tic turn around last season, and now, with nine returning starters, Coach Messina thinks his defense could be even better in 2011. “We were able to defend much better in all phases last year and we did a much better job of creating turn-overs,” he stated.

Messina uses a 3-4 defensive scheme. The big guys up front

include Defensive Ends Hunter Hughes and Delvin Brumfi eld while Vincent Jones is at Tackle. Three of the four linebackers are back this season with Brennan Catalano, Cody Navarro and Santo Stevens all back in the mix. Kurtis Lamb is also at linebacker for the Wolves.

The secondary includes Jeryl Bra-zil, Jonathan King, Cody Smith and Luke Ingraffi a. Coach Messina has done a good job of putting togeth-er a schedule that allows his team to be tested before a tough district slate.

The Wolves non-district schedule includes 2A power Riverside, STA, Country Day, 4A Pearl River and 1A power Kentwood. The key is re-maining in good shape health wise before the month of October when the district title will be decided.

The Wolves have a tough stretch as they face Independence and

Amite in back-to-back weeks in week eight and nine of this 2011 season. “Right now, we want to just focus on getting better and take things one game at a time. These players have worked hard to get to this point. This group has been through a lot of ups and downs in the last two seasons and they want to keep things going in the right direction,” said Messina.

in our own district,” said Jackets Coach Ja-son Brabham. The Jackets have lost two close games to start the season but they are coming together as the team prepares for a tough dis-trict schedule.

Oak Forest has some big shoes to fi ll in some of their best player makers that have moved on to play college athletics. Two guys that will be extremely hard to replace are Drew Misita and James Ray Peterson.

Both of those players were a huge part of what the Jackets did on offense and defense and they will be surely missed this season. But, as he has done so many times before in the past, Coach Brabham will call on other players to step up and fi ll some holes.

The Jackets are a very young team with only ten seniors back in 2011. “We feel like we have made some big strides thus far, but we have to keep working and getting better if we are go-ing to compete in district play this season,” said Brabham.

Carter Capdeboscq leads the Jackets at quar-terback while the rest of the offensive backfi eld

has Fullback Rhase Riggins and Running Backs Ryan Riggins and Landon Murphy. Tight End Austin Lee fi gures to give the Jackets good op-tions in their passing game while former Ham-mond Tornado Josh Byars adds a legitimate deep threat to the Jackets passing attack also.

The OFA o-line features Tackles Chris Cham-bers and Daniel Henderson, at the guard spots are Brock Farace and Justin Bankston and the center is Andrew Giardina. “We have some good experience up front with four of our fi ve starters back from last season,” said Brabham.

The Jackets will rely on their veteran defense to lead the way while the new faces over on offense come together. Although there are just three returning starters from last seasons squad Coach Brabham has seen Defensive Co-ordinator Doug Misita work his magic in fi lling gaps over the course of the last few years.

Cameron Carter and Dave Smith are at defen-sive ends, the defensive tackles are Chambers and Justin Bankston and Giardina is at the nose guard spot. Ryan Riggins, Austin Lee and Zach Kent make up the linebackers and the three

members of the defensive secondary include Rhett Riggins, Josh Byers and Caleb Brumfi eld.

For Coach Brabham and his OFA Jackets it’s all about peaking at the right time. “We have got-ten off to slow starts before, but we just have to be patient and come together. If we can remain healthy and gel before district play we can be-come a good team.”

Wednesday, August 31, 2011 Fast and Furious 27B

We are only a handful of days into train-ing camp 2011 but after watching the fi rst wave of Saints Practices I would bank on the following things. The fi rst is improved special teams play. The second thing I bet on is Saints safeties Roman Harper and Malcolm Jenkins will be hailed as the best pair of safeties in the NFL and the two will be among the league’s best individually as well. The third thing is I feel secure in say-ing that second year player Junior Galette is going to have a breakout season. And fi nally the Saints rushing attack will be much improved.

Let’s go in reverse order and begin with a part of the Saints offense that will af-fect the entire game plan of the Saints. In 2009 New Orleans averaged over 131-yards rushing per game which ranked them among the best in the NFL with the 6th best rushing offense.

But in 2010 that number was not nearly as good as the Saints rushing offense went from being among the best to the worst in just one season as New Orleans fi nished as the 28th best rushing team in the NFL with an average of just over 94-yards per game.

The Saints went through eight running backs last season as the injury bug hit the club in early August with the season end-ing injury to Lynell Hamilton and that very same injury bug plagued the Saints all the way to their fi nal game of the season against the Tampa Bay Bucs and on into the playoffs against Seattle.

New Orleans will challenge their offen-sive line this season and the Saints Core of RB’s is much deeper this season with Pierre Thomas, Chris Ivory, Lynell Hamil-ton, Darren Sproles and of course rookie running back Mark Ingram.

Next up I do believe that second year player defensive end Junior Galette is about to as the youngsters say “blow up.” Galette began to gain attention during training camp last year when he man-handled one of the Saints top draft picks from the class of 2010 in rookie left tackle Charles Brown.

Stillman College is not supposed to whip up on USC right? Well, that took place and the quick and versatile Galette continued to improve from week to week and in the Saints fi nal preseason game against the Tennessee Titans Galette went off.

Some feel that Galettes’ performance in the Saints preseason fi nale against the Ti-tans help cement his place on the team’s 53 man roster. Galette had one quarter-back sack and he also blocked a punt and fi nished the game with three total tackles

in the Saints match-up with Tennessee. Galette looks like he is more comfort-

able in Coach Greg Williams defense and with continued improvement Galette could become a force up front for a Saints defense that needs to get more heat on opposing quarterbacks and a defense that will be without defensive end Will Smith for the fi rst four games of the season.

“My goal is not just to make the roster. It’s all about making plays and having sol-id production on the fi eld. I have bigger goals for myself and my family and I want to become a consistent player,” Galette said.

The next one is rather easy as Roman and Malcolm have done all the work themselves. Saints safeties Roman Harper and Malcolm Jenkins have quickly become a solid pair in the NFL if not the best pair of safeties in the game today.

4 things to look for this season!

To say that it was an eventful week would be grossly understated. A week ago the LSU Tigers did not know what was going on or more importantly they did not know the future of their starting quarterback Jordan Jefferson.

“That determination has not been made. Certainly they won’t practice this week,” said a disappointed LSU coach Les Miles. Miles was speaking about his Senior Quarter-back Jefferson and reserve Linebacker Josh Johns.

Jefferson and Johns were both charged with second degree battery Friday, August 19 for their alleged involvement in a fi ght that took place outside of Shady’s Bar just off the LSU Campus. The Tigers football team went through a tough week with much of the world watching to see what the outcome would be after a long week of media coverage.

Now Coach Miles may face his toughest test yet in getting his veteran team to re-direct their focus to one of the best teams in the nation in the 3rd ranked Oregon Ducks. The Tigers square off against the Ducks this Saturday night in new Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.

“I think we all understand our marching orders. Our team understands that there’s not much they can do specifi cally to help either Josh or Jordan. It’s more about prepar-

ing to play,” said Miles at a press conference last Friday.Miles now has to call on his back-up quarterbacks while the future of Jordan Jefferson

remains unclear. “Jarrett Lee is our starter. Since the issue we’ve moved in a way that would allow Jarrett to spend a lot of time on the fi eld. Really the decision was made more fully today. Jarrett just had a heck of a practice. He’s really working to do the things he needs to do to make this team go.”

Coach Miles has certainly had his share of tough situations while at LSU. Coach Miles had to deal with Hurricane Katrina and the after math of the storm in his fi rst season with the Tigers back in 2005.

Then Miles was closely followed and criticized by the way he handled former Quar-terback Ryan Perrilloux and of course the stress of bad publicity after the Tigers wild loss to Ole Miss in 2009 and his teams weird win over Tennessee last season.

But this situation may be the most diffi cult. Will Miles have his Tigers ready to play? I’d bet money that he will have the purple and gold ready to roll. Will the Tigers knock off the Ducks? That is the question that Tigers fans all over the world are curiously waiting for!

Roman has steadily improved and Jen-kins knack for the ball was evident last season with a game changing play in the Saints win over the Rams when he picked off Sam Bradford and returned the inter-ception for a touchdown and again on Turkey Day when Malcolm saved the day for the Black and Gold by jacking Cow-boys wide receiver Roy Williams.

Look for Roman and Malcolm to be even more in sink this season and I tru-ly believe that both will be mentioned among the best in the game. And fi nally

look for the Saints to improve drastically on special teams.

The Saints have been looking for more consistency in their punt return game and also in kickoff coverage. New Orleans showed fl ashes at times of being better in those two areas but look for much im-provement this season.

Now it would be easy to say that the acquisition of one of the best returners in the game today in Darren Sproles is the reason why and that is true. But you also have to factor in the attention being paid

to upgrading special teams play at prac-tice on a daily basis.

Special Teams Coach Greg McMahon now has some serious help in coaching Saints special teams. Former Special Teams Coordinator of the Miami Dolphins John Bonamego is now back in the “Big Easy.”

Coach Bonamego brings a ton of coach-ing back to New Orleans where he served as special teams coordinator for the Saints during the 2006 and 2007 NFL Seasons. Basically put the Saints have two special

teams coordinators manning the sidelines this season.

And I’ll throw you “Who Dats” a softball on this one. I don’t play fantasy football but I’m going to start this year. With that said take Saints tight end Jimmy Graham. He will be cheaper to get early on but af-ter about the midway point of the season his price tag will rise because he is poised to have a breakout season in 2011!

Alabama - Yes they have a tough schedule but who in the SEC doesn’t? The Tide has to break in a new quar-terback but after early season games at Penn State and a home date with a dangerous Arkansas team, I think the quarterbacks will be ready. Mark Baron leads the nation’s best defensive backfi eld and running back Trent Richardson is a game breaker. Being in the SEC the Tide can have one slip up and still make it to the Big Easy for the BCS Title Game.

Oklahoma - Quarterback Landry Jones threw more passes (617) than any quarterback in the nation last sea-son. Jones should get close to the 50 touchdown mark this season and he has some good help around him. Four of fi ve interior linemen return up front on offense and wide receiver Ryan Broyles gets overlooked big Okla-homa State’s Justin Blackmon. Broyles hauled in 131 re-ceptions last year with 1,622-yards and 14 touchdowns. Fellow wide receiver Kenny Stills should be able to have a good season and the defense should be better with line backer Travis Lewis back this season. The Sooners defense must improve on their rushing attack as they al-lowed 148-yards per game. However when your offense is one of the best in the country there is a little room for error. A huge early season road trip to Tallahassee to take on FSU and a late season date in Stillwater to face rival Oklahoma State looks like the biggest hurdles for the Sooners!

Oregon - The Ducks should run though their regular season schedule again but that does not include their fi rst game of the season against LSU in Dallas. Auburn physically manhandled Oregon in the trenches and LSU will use the same game plan. The nation’s top scoring offense last season 47 ppg should hit the 40 point mark on average again this season with running back LaMi-chael James back and quarterback Darron Thomas. The Ducks will be the cream of the Pac-12 again this season but Stanford will be a challenge again.

LSU - The Tigers are loaded on both sides of the ball and they have a four year starter at quarterback. Now, will that quarterback fi nally play with some consistency in his fi nal season? LSU’s strength should lie within their veteran offensive line and the Tigers have a stable of run-ning backs including the talented Spencer Ware. The de-

fense is salty with a secondary set to become one of the best in the nation despite losing one of the best in the nation in Patrick Peterson. LSU opens with Oregon and the fi rst month of the season is the most diffi cult start to any Tigers Schedule in school history. If the Tigers come out of September without a loss that should set them up to be in position to have a chance to win the SEC West and then a trip to Atlanta has been the path for the last fi ve national champions!

Florida State - Everyone in the sunshine state and the nation as well is claiming that the Noles are back! I think they are but how much they are back will depend on the play of quarterback EJ Manuel. One of the most prized recruits of Coach Jimbo Fisher, Manuel is set to become the full time starter for FSU. Running back Chris Thomp-son heads up a running back by committee core of backs. The FSU defense is loaded with speed and athleticism. Line backer Nigel Bradham is one of the best in the ACC and DE Brandon Jennings is expected to pick up where he left off a year ago. Jennings recorded 16 tackles for a loss and 13 ½ sacks in 2010. And cornerback Greg Reid should anchor the secondary. The schedule is tough with an early season home date with Oklahoma followed by a trip to Death Valley to face Clemson, a place where the Noles have not won since 2001!

Arkansas - The Hogs are here to stay. Coach Bobby Petrino is an offensive genius and he has the luxury of replacing a top fl ight quarterback with another top fl ight quarterback in Tyler Wilson. Wilson should not miss a beat and his weapons are as good as any in the na-tion. Arkansas has the best core of wide receivers in the country in Greg Childs, Joe Adams and Jarius Wright. And running back Knile Davis should have another banner year. But Arkansas has two tough stretches this season to overcome. Early on a four game stretch that features Bama, Texas A&M, Auburn and Ole Miss along with a sea-son ending stretch that has games against South Caro-lina, Tennessee, Mississippi State and LSU might be too much for these high powered Hogs to overcome!

Nebraska - Coach Bo Pelini and his Huskers are now in the Big Ten! Nebraska will once again feature one of the nation’s most feared defensive units with three potential All-Americans. Lockdown cornerback Alfonzo

Dennard returns along with defensive tackle Jared Crick and line backer Lavonte David who set a Nebraska record with 152 tackles last season. The defense will be set but quarterback Taylor Martinez will have to improve on his passing skills this season. The Huskers will be able to run the ball but what will they be able to do when forced the pass is the question that has to be answered in a positive way this season!

Boise State - We all know that if the Broncos are going to be in the hunt they can’t lose one game! The Broncos have one of the best defenses in the land (12.8 points per game allowed in 2010) and quarterback Kellen Moore will go down as one of the best quarterbacks we have seen. In three year Moore has thrown for 10,867-yards and 99 touchdowns with just 19 interceptions. The Bron-cos average margin of victory was 32.3 per game in 2010 but as I said earlier one loss and they are done. That loss will come in the fi rst week of the season against the Bull-dogs of Georgia!

Oklahoma State - A school record 11 win season should be followed up with another double digit win campaign this year. Wide receiver Justin Blackmon is as good as any in the nation and quarterback Brandon Weeden is back after guiding an offense that scored on average 44.2 points per game. All fi ve offensive linemen return and that means this Cowboys offense should rack up big numbers again in 2011. The Cowboys did an excellent job of taking the ball away from opponents last season as OSU fi nished the season plus 12 in the turnover de-partment. Watch out for a late September game at Texas A&M and of course a date in Austin with an improved Texas team before the fi nal game of the season at home against rival OU.

South Carolina - I will put the Gamecocks here but, I’d be very surprised if they are a top ten team in 2011. 1st off quarterback Stephen Garcia is erratic and must im-prove on his touchdown to interception ratio (20/14) and he needs to stay out of trouble. Wide receiver Alshon Jef-fery is arguably the best in the nation after last season’s 88 grabs for 1517-yards and 9 touchdowns and running back Marcus Lattimore is poised for another great sea-son. But an early season test at Georgia will be a huge hurdle followed by a late season stretch that features

three straight games against Mississippi State, Tennes-see and Arkansas which will be too much for the Game-cocks to handle.

Others to keep an eye on - Georgia - The Dogs will be back in a very big way this year. With an early season win over Boise State and another early win over South Caro-lina will put UGA close to the top ten if not in it! Virginia

Tech - The Hokie have another dangerous signal caller in Logan Thomas. Running back David Wilson should have a banner year and the Hokies defense has to be better against the run (155.9 per game) under longtime Defen-sive Coordinator Bud Foster. Texas A&M - Coach Mike Sherman has the Aggies rolling despite Texas A&M being embarrassed last season in the Cotton Bowl. The Aggies

have eighteen starters back this season including one of the nation’s top targets in wide receiver Jeff Fuller. Run-ning back Cyrus Gray should up his total of 1,133-yards last year but a tough four game stretch that includes dates with Oklahoma State, Arkansas, Texas Tech and Baylor will determine the Aggies fate whether or not they will be a legit contender in the Big XII this season.

Deke’s Super Six Heisman Hopefuls!Last year a young man named Cam

came out of nowhere and dominated col-lege football. This season I think that a young man that we already know will do the same. And his last name “Luck” has nothing to do with his play on the fi eld as Andrew Luck is not lucky. He’s good. Let’s take a look at this year’s top six players as we enter the 2011 CFB Season.

Andrew Luck quarterback Stanford - Luck would have been the top pick in the 2011 NFL Draft but he decided to come back for his senior season. Luck com-pleted seventy percent of his passes last season and he should be in that number

again this year. If Stanford gets to a nice bowl again this season look for Luck to take home the Heisman.

Landry Jones quarterback Oklahoma - The Sooners will throw the ball more than any quarterback in the nation again this season after chunking it 617 times in 2010. Look for Jones to surpass his 38 touchdown passing mark last season and if he leads his Sooners to the BCS Title Game he should win the Heisman!

LaMichael James running back Oregon - James ran for nearly 1800-yards last season and 21 touchdowns. He can put himself in the lead with a solid showing

against a tough LSU defense in the fi rst game of the season. James is the top run-ning back as far as Heisman candidates are concerned this season.

Justin Blackmon wide receiver Oklaho-ma State - Blackmon put up pro numbers last season as he hopes to become just the third wide receiver to win the Heis-man. 111 grabs for 1,782-yards with 20 touch downs is all right by me. Wide re-ceivers are a long shot but Blackmon will have impressive numbers to help his long shot cause!

Marcus Lattimore running backs South Carolina - Only one sophomore has ever

won the Heisman (Tim Tebow) but Lat-timore should get the carries needed to pad his numbers. As a freshman last year Marcus averaged 4.8-yards per carry and averaged over 92-yards rushing per game in the defensive laden SEC. If young Mar-cus averages over 100-yards rushing per game and his Gamecocks get back to the SEC Title Game he has a great shot!

Trent Richardson running back Alabama - Ok Trent now you have got things to yourself in the Tide Backfi eld. Will Trent pad his numbers or, will he miss Mark In-gram more than we all know?

2011 St. Helena HawksHead Coach: Solomon Lee2010 Record: 1-8Starters Returning: 14 (8-offense/6-

defense)District: 9-2ACoach Solomon Lee is hoping that

the return of 14 starters will help put his 2011 St. Helena Central Hawks back on the winning track. The Hawks are coming off a disappointing 1-8 campaign in 2010, but that was then and the Hawks have a lot of key play-ers back on both sides of the ball.

Look for Coach Lee to try and rush the ball more this season as he has the luxury of a veteran offensive line back up front to open holes. All fi ve of the Hawks offensive lineman are back this season after fi nishing the season strong in 2010.

Up front on the line, both tackles are

back in Justin Davis and Jameron Wil-liams. At offensive guard, the Hawks welcome back Jovante Watson and Kendrick Griffi n and Kennice Schaffer will be at center.

The Hawks will call on Brandon Wil-liams, Jonathan Butler, Jessie Clark and Tyrea Gordon in their passing game as the team’s receiving core. Quarterback Robert Trout is back and is, arguably, the best young quarter-back in the district. Junior Neal Brad-ford is the Hawks main running back threat.

Six players return to the St. Helena defense this season. The Hawks did give up a lot of points and yards in 2010, but Coach Solomon Lee is hop-ing that his six veterans, along with some new faces, can come together and become a solid unit.

Coach Lee uses a 4-2-5 scheme on

defense. Defensive End Laterence Self and Defensive Tackle Jovante Watson lead the Hawks defensive line along with Defensive End Jessie Clark and Defensive Tackle Prentis Rogers. The linebackers are Damien Smith and Alexander Muse, while the defensive secondary seems to be in very good hands with the return of Brandon Wil-liams, Randy Fields and Arthur Can-non. Neal Bradford and Toi Williams are new faces in the defensive back-fi eld.

The Hawks are somewhat of a mys-tery going into the season. St. Helena has some talented players back this season, but can they make a run in district 9-2A this year? We may get a clearer picture by watching the Hawks in their non-district schedule.

Facing the likes of Amite, Kentwood and Albany should give St. Helena a

good gauge if they are going to make some noise this season in league play.

Veterans return to the Hawks’ Lineup

Please ElectMelissa Ficklin ClarkMelissa Ficklin Clark

St. Helena Parish SheriffI hope to have the opportunity to represent the people of St. Helena Parish as your Sheriff. We are a small community that has

been plagued by crime including home break-ins, thefts, and drugs. These break-ins and thefts are not only being carried out in the cover of darkness but also in the daylight. The majority of the people in St. Helena are honest, hard-working people and they are being victimized by these criminals. I would like to protect you and your family as well as belongings from these criminals.

I was born and raised in St. Helena and it was instilled in me to care for my neighbors. I care that our children are being ex-posed to drugs of every kind. I care that there are seniors in our community with no one seeing to their welfare. I hope to encour-age a stronger community and organize Neighborhood Watch programs, as well as a stronger Reserve Deputy Organization.

When people that are convicted of a crime in St. Helena most of them are sentenced to Community Service hours. Our com-munity needs to benefi t from this, as well as allow these individuals make penance for their mistakes. A structured program for this would benefi t our community churches, fi re departments, parks and recreations and especially cleaning our Parish Roads and the individual in allowing them to give back.

I would have an open-door policy. I have always and will continue to treat everyone with respect and courtesy no matter their social or economic status, creed, race or political position. It is vital that the Sheriff be seen as a leader and that the direction of the Sheriff’s Offi ce be clear and consistent. I will work alongside other law enforcement offi cials, the District Attorney and the Judiciary system to meet our goals and objectives. The Sheriff does not and should not make the law, but should enforce the law.

My vision for the St. Helena Parish Sheriff’s Offi ce is a well oiled machine. I want to have a team consisting of professional, well-trained, highly motivated individuals who understand that law enforcement should maintain a partnership with the public that it serves. I will bring, through action, a partnering concept to the offi ce. The Sheriff’s Offi ce exists to serve and protect the citizens of the parish, and we must be responsive to the needs of the community. Law enforcement must constantly evolve in order to keep pace with the ever changing criminal element; to do this we must stay on top of the latest training and information.

Thank you for your consideration and your vote on October 22, 2011. Paid for by Melissa Ficklin Clark

2011 Sumner CowboysHead Coach: Zephaniah Powell2010 Record: 7-3Starters Returning: 13 (8-offense / 5-defense)District: 8-3AAnother turn around took place in Tangipa-

hoa Parish last season and it took place at Jewel Sumner High School. After a 3-7 season in 2009 Coach Zephaniah Powell guided his Cowboys to an impressive 7-3 mark last season and a berth in the Class 3A playoffs.

“We did a lot of good things last year. We were right in the hunt in district play and the players worked hard to get us back on the right track. We obviously did not fi nish the season the way we would have liked to, but the moti-

vation to get better this year is something we look forward to,” said Coach Powell.

No one, and I mean no one, gave Sumner a shot last season to be in the district title hunt but the Cowboys hung tough in district play as they went toe-to-toe with district champion Amite. Now Sumner is looking to stay in the district title hunt and go even further in the Class 3A Playoffs.

Sumner will be tested much more this season in their non-district schedule as Coach Powell has stepped up in class with games against 4A St. Michael, 5A Mandeville, and foes like Pine and Kentwood are also on the schedule.

But, Coach Powell knows that his district is tough. A solid non-district schedule should

allow his Cowboys team the time to come to-gether and be tested before they take on Amite, Independence and Loranger.

The much improved Cowboys defense lost six solid players from last season to graduation, and that is where the biggest holes have to be fi lled. “Our defense really stepped up last sea-son, and we had some solid players that have moved on. But we feel like some quality guys are back with us, as are some new players that just need some experience in order to be a complete unit this season,” Powell said.

The fi ve players that Coach Powell is counting on to lead the way for the new players include Defensive End Matt Shaw, Linebackers Tyler Trout and Walter Ricks and Defensive Backs,

Sumner Cowboys motivated for a great upcoming season

Page 61: Fast & Furious - Football 2011

Derek Martin and Billy Hinson are the returning starters.

That means six new starters will be asked to step up and contribute right away to the Cowboys defense. Linebackers Earnest McCoy, Weston Bridges and Derek Chaisson, along with Defensive Back Chad Vernon and Defen-sive Linemen Cardell Barnes and Brian Hyde, make up the rest of the defense.

The Cowboys have a veteran offense that features eight starters back this season. The strength of the Cowboys offense will be along their veteran offensive line. Four of the fi ve of the Cowboys offensive linemen are back this season and that is a plus for Sumner.

Tackles Colton Splane and Wendarius Black-burn are back, the guards are Chevy Landry and Kyle Waller while Statham Hartman is back at center. The receiving core includes Jeremy Cu-trer, Miquel James, Brandon Ebersole and Josh Trout.

And the Cowboys backfi eld welcomes back Running Back Marckus Brumfi eld and Quarter-back Michael Spears. Look for steady improve-

ment from Sumner this season and another winning season with a trip to the playoffs is the goal for Sumner in 2011.

As the LSU Tigers continue to prepare for the 2011 college football season there are many question marks about the Bayou Bengals. But the one constant that re-mains atop of the list of questions that Tigers Fans want answered is that about the quarterback position.

Senior quarterback Jordan Jefferson looks to be ready for a breakout season but until the former Destrehan Wildcat plays with consistency Tigers fans will remain guarded at best about the play of their quarterback.

Jefferson has had big games in his ca-reer but the big games will need to hap-pen on a weekly basis in 2011 if the LSU Tigers are going to reach their expecta-

tions. Jefferson does not need to go out and throw for 300-yards and four scores per game but he must be able to pose a legitimate passing threat weekly in order for the Tigers to have a balanced offense.

From all reports from spring practice and summer workouts Jefferson looks poised to have a breakout year. In his two seasons as the Tigers full time starter Jef-ferson has led the Tigers to a 20-6 over-all record and he has a 2-1 record as the Tigers quarterback in the last three bowl games.

LSU’s offense was carried by their rush-ing attack in 2010 and now it’s time for Jefferson to step up his play. Basically put it’s now or never for Jefferson. Jefferson’s

win loss total is as good as is gets in the SEC but he needs to be more aggressive in passing the ball this season.

Now Tigers coaches must also do their part in showing some confi dence in the senior as he has proven he is more than capable of leading LSU to an SEC Champi-onship with his big play capability.

But in the last two seasons the Tigers fi nished 92nd and 110th in total passing yards per game in the nation. Those num-bers just won’t cut it this season. Jefferson can become a much better player but he needs help from his teammates as well.

Several times in 2010 when Jordan got off to a good start in games far too many times wide receivers dropped passes.

When a quarterback is trying to play with confi dence he needs his wide receivers to catch the football.

The LSU offensive lien must continue to pave the way for a consistent ground game to take pressure off Jefferson. The Tigers young but talented core of running backs have to do a better job when stay-ing in the back fi eld and pass protecting for Jefferson.

So, as we all get fi red up about the Ti-gers chances this season ultimately LSU needs to have their senior quarterback step up and be the leader that Tigers fans are all hoping and wanting Jordan Jeffer-son to be.

Confident Jefferson ready for senior season

Hard Times, Rock Box, Sucker MC’s, My Adidas and Walk this way were all great hits from the most famous rap trio of all time of course all hip hop heads out there know I’m talking about Run D.M.C. D.M.C was the best trio ever and they were be-cause of the way they worked, fl owed and came up with hit after hit on a consistent basis.

Down in the “Big Easy” there is another trio forming in that of three New Orleans Saints Running backs, Pierre Thomas, rookie Mark Ingram and second year star Chris Ivory and I personally think they have what it takes to be the best trio of backs in the NFL.

Now I’m not getting ahead of myself just pointing out what I think is obvious. Under Coach Sean Payton we have seen several different combinations of running backs in his tenure as Saints coach. Deuce and Reggie, Reggie and Pierre, Reggie and Chris and Pierre and Chris but have we ever seen a group that brings more valu-able assets to the Saints offense than this group?

You would have to go back to the 1980’s when the Saints had Dalton Hillard, Reu-ben Mayes, Barry Word and of course Bu-

ford Jordan to come up with a group of RB’s as talented as this group currently on the Saints squad.

But due to the style of the game and former Offensive Coordinator Carl Smith, the Saints did not get all of those former solid players on the fi eld enough. That certainly is not and won’t be the case with one of the best offensive minds in the game today in Coach Sean Payton.

Payton has to be salivating over the cur-rent group of running backs he has going into training camp 2011. The combination of size, speed, power and athleticism are all well evident with this trio of running backs and when you toss a proven player like running back Lynell Hamilton into the mix then you can clearly come to under-stand that the Saints have all they need and then some with this stable of backs.

Pierre Thomas has become one of the most versatile backs in the game today and many think Pierre is the best at run-ning the screen play. In four seasons Pierre has contributed on average over 100-yards total per game. Chris Ivory had an incredible season as a rookie in 2010 despite being injured and having diffi cul-ties holding on to the football at times.

And then of course there is the big bad but yet humble Mark Ingram. Ingram won the Heisman trophy two years ago and over the course of his fi nal two seasons in Tuscaloosa Ingram picked up more yards after contact than any other back in CFB during that time span.

What Pierre has, skins on the wall and the trust of coach Payton whether it be running the ball, catching the ball out of the backfi eld or protecting Drew Brees, the other two have to pick up. But I think all are confi dent that will happen.

Like Pierre did in 2007, Ivory came out of nowhere to make a name for himself by running through defenders at practice and during preseason games a year ago. Ivory then got even better last year sea-son as the year progressed.

In 195 total snaps played in 2010 Chris Ivory forced 31 missed tackles and he averaged 5.5-yards per carry. But even more impressive was that Ivory averaged 3.3 yards per carry after contact which only two other NFL running backs accom-plished last season in Oakland’s Darren McFadden and Tampa’s LeGarrett Blount.

Ivory began to pick up the blocking scheme even better as on the 12 plays he

was forced to pass protect Ivory did not surrender any pressure on quarter back Drew Brees. Now all Chris has to do is hold on to the ball much better in 2011 and he will be more of a complete RB for the Saints.

So, as training camp begins we will see a very good battle at the running back po-sition from day one. Regardless of how it shakes out as far as who becomes the top guy and which players make the squad, General Manager Mickey Loomis and Coach Sean Payton have come up with a group of backs that will give the Saints plenty enough options this season and seasons to come.

So in honor of the greatest rap trio of all time let’s hope our trio will pump out big runs, physical plays and touch downs like the great Run D.M.C. did hits and hard hitting albums. I can see it now on billboards all across NFL cities.

Loomis and Payton productions proudly presents “Run P.M.C” coming to a stadi-um near you to do what they do! I can’t wait. Can you? Who Dat!

Run PMC - Pierre, Mark and Chris - best trio in NFL?

LSU running backs Coach Frank Wilson has longed been considered to be one of the greatest recruiters in college football. Wilson and his Tigers offensive backfi eld has a chance to show some of that very same greatness this season.

That is a strong statement considering that one of the SEC’s leading rushers in former Tiger Stevan Ridley is now in the NFL. Ridley had an incredible season in 2010 with 1,147-yards rushing and 15 touchdowns which was the seventh best single season total in LSU Football His-tory.

But, as I have said before the cupboard is not bare in Baton Rouge! The LSU Ti-gers have a core of running backs that are as talented and deep as any entering the 2011 college football season. And two of those six players have yet to play in a col-lege football game. Three sophomores and three freshman players make up a

solid core of running backs for the Bayou Bengals. In my personal opinion the head-line name is Spencer Ware. Ware is an explosive, yet powerful running back that can be dangerous between the tackles, he can run well outside and he has proven that he is a dangerous player when catch-ing the ball out of the backfi eld as well.

Ware carried the ball just 24 times in 2010 but he totaled 175-yards and aver-aged 7.3-yards per carry. The other vet-eran players at the running back position include Michael Ford and Alfred Blue.

Blue averaged 5.1-yards per carry last season while Ford is LSU’s leading return-ing rusher with 244-yards for an average of 5.4-yards per carry last season. Red-shirt freshman Jakhari Gore could be con-sidered the dark horse of the group.

Gore was redshirted last season but had a very good spring as he was named one of the most improved players on the

LSU team during spring drills. The other two players that round out the group of running backs for the Tigers are incom-ing freshman Terrance Magee and Kenny Hillard.

Hillard led his 3A Patterson Lumberjacks to the 3A Title Game in 2010 while Magee helped his Franklinton Demons win the Class 4A Title last December. Both players come to campus in Baton Rouge with im-pressive resumes and high expectations.

Hillard has been considered one of the best running backs in the country since he was a sophomore at Patterson. Hillard rushed for over 1,800-yards last season and scored 22 touchdowns with an aver-age of 6.5-yards per rush.

Hillard was able to enter school prior to spring practice and was able to lead the LSU System during spring despite being injured some. Magee is my favorite to sur-prise this season. Magee had a lights out

season for the Demons in 2010 in which he scored 52 total touchdowns as a senior under Coach Shane Smith.

Magee is built like Spencer Ware and he can break tackles and he has breakaway speed as well. Magee rushed for over 1,300-yards from the quarterback posi-tion last season and he scored 19 touch-downs while averaging 8.5-yards per car-ry. Magee amassed over 4,000-yards last season throwing and rushing the football.

So Coach Frank Wilson will be look-ing hard this training camp to see which backs give the Tigers the best chance to win. Having a solid player in the line-up will certainly not be a problem and the great thing is that of the six running backs competing this fall all are very young and will be with the LSU football program for quite some time!
