The Roaring Twenties 1920 – 1929

Memories of the 1920s

Fast Asleep! (1920s)

I was a Resident on the 4th floor in what is now Taché Hall in 1954-55. I would like, however, to send a short story, which involved two guys from Rapid City in about 1920, one of them being my Dad.

My Dad shared a room in the Men’s Residence with his friend. One evening, some chums dropped in and my Dad’s roommate had already gone to bed—for the night was not young. The chums lifted Dad’s sleeping roommate to the floor and placed the mattress over him and then the bed.

After these chums left, my Dad uncovered his still-sleeping roommate and woke him up and helped him go to bed with dignity. Dad was quite sure he would have smothered, if left undisturbed!

The Old Boys’ Reunion (1920)

With the flight of time has come and gone another ex-students’ reunion, leaving nothing but pleasant memories behind it. From the time of the first arrivals in the early afternoon until the last echoes of Boom-Chick a-Boom had died away, not a moment was lost in carrying

out the day’s varied programme, which occupied the whole afternoon and evening. The interest at first centered on the rink where many were skating, while teams from the various

classes indulged in the “roarin’ game” of curling. Intense interest was shown in the girls’ basketball game between the ex-students and the regular team.

Shortly before six o’clock, all thronged to the Auditorium, arranged themselves in groups according to class years, and then to the Dining Room, where an excellent banquet was served.

After the presentations, everyone returned to the Auditorium, “where youth and pleasure met to chase the glowing hours with flying feet.”

A good night’s sleep, after all!
