To Tie the Knot by Katie Kilcoyne Everyone loves a good tie or bow tie. They can be used to openly express your personality and quirkiness, while still ticking the formal box. Fashion police is definitely not just one for the girls, and so, for this feature, we decided to shine the spotlight on our lovely male delegates and officials. From having a quick glance at GA, you can’t have missed the fact that certain lads take pride in their attire, all prim and proper in their suits. It’s amazing the confidence and well fitted suit can bring. The centre piece of the suit is definitely the tie/dickey bow. Intricate patterns, stripes, colours and knots can be seen at GA, and, from running around with my camera at the lunch break, I carefully considered what are the best of the best on show at the session. *Drumroll please........* The very last paper from us. We can’t really believe that we managed to survive the session and that our poor technological skills actually got us this far! We hope you’ve enjoyed all the great stuff that our journos have created for you over the past three days. Fashion police as mentioned in our editorial in the Welcome Paper is essentially our baby. Created as a total joke originally, it seems to have stood the test of time and has now become somewhat of a fond EYP Ireland institution. To Tie the Knotby Katie Kilcoyne

Everyone loves a good tie or bow tie. They can be used to openly express your personality and quirkiness, while still ticking the formal box.Fashion police is definitely not just one for the girls, and so, for this feature, we decided to shine the spotlight on our lovely male delegates and officials.

As you have probably noticed, what you wear to an EYP event says a lot about what kind of delegate you are. To help you dress to impress, I have put together a fashion guide to suss out the personalities on your committee at a glance, as well as to show you the truth behind what your outfit says about you. So, if you took the ‘What Kind of Delegate Are You?’ qui by the fabulous Gemma Lyons in the Welcome Issue, then read on........

IF YOU GOT MOSTLY A’S.......You are the hard working, straight talking delegate, the delegate equivalent of an encyclopedia. Congrats! You are a core member of your committee.

Your sensible nature means that you go for taste and style but steer clear of anything too fussy because, at the end of the day, it’s all about the

resolution. For the lads out there, expect a sweater vest-shirt combo and the ladies, a simple dress and skater skirt.

IF YOU GOT MOSTLY B’S.......You are the soul of the committee, the mad one who’s always up for a laugh and brightens up everyone’s day. Your clothing screams ‘I am

great craic!’ The boys can often been seen in something vibrant and quirky, such as a colored suit or a funky bow tie. The girls wear bright patterns, and playsuits and flat shoes are recommended so you can go all-out with the team building games.

IF YOU GOT MOSTLY C’S.......Well hello there you schnazzy thang you. As the delegate that your committee look to for a grounded realistic opinion, you have to look the part. The guys can be seen in a snappy suit, not unlike our friend James Bond over here while a black, sheer dress is a classy, elegant option for the ladies.

IF YOU GOT MOSTLY D’S.......The quite delegate can often be identified by their clothing, as they often wear jumpers or jackets as a type of safety blanket. Colours are often simple or muted to avoid attracting too much attention. If this sounds like you, then you buachaillí are probably wearing a simple round-neck or v-neck jumper and a shirt. The cailíní may

find themselves wearing a heavy, neutral blazer or jacket.

What Your Outfit Says About You

M o s t p e o p l e a r e a healthy mix of many types of delegates, so don’t be disconcerted if your personality doesn’t match your style. But it can be interesting to see how what you wea r influences people’s first i m p re s s i o n s o f y o u . Maybe you’ll pick your outfit differently next time, who knows?

Pink and Red Should Never Been Seen.......

Ever been puzzled by the color spectrum and which colors should be best friends and which colors should never meet? Red and black; perfect. Blue and white? Grand! Pink and Red? Oh, lord no! This may seem like a personal attack on these two colours but they are asking for it when they decide to pair up. They just don’t match. Period.

There are justifications for my disdain of this offensive combo. First off, they sit too close to each other on the rainbow, neighbors don’t make for a winning team. Secondly, do you really believe that marshmallows and tomatoes are aesthetically pleasing ?

Have a glance at the picture of the roses above. ‘Ah aren’t they gorgeous’, you probably mused on first viewing. Now,look again; the red and pink jar, taking away from the romance that roses carry. Had it been a balance of ivory white and pure red roses, that would have made for a winning coupling, the two colours being far apart enough on the spectrum to create contrast. Contrast can be key when mixing your colours.

Of course, red and pink aren’t the only offenders (specific shades of green and orange with black could have you resembling a christmas tree or a pumpkin) but the use of both simultaneously seems to always guarantee a fashion faux pas.

STYLE SHOWDOWN

NAVY-BLUE BLACK: Alexa Chung has been a style pioneer of the trend and her influence has rocketed it to fame

RED PINK: SJP is a style Goddess and no one disputes this but even she can’t pull red pink off.......reason enough for the pairing to disappear and never be seen again

THE DEBATE RAGES ON:NAVY BLUE & BLACK

“It’s called power clashing”

-Said our very own President, James Moran, as he rocked a

winning navy-black suit combo

“traumatized from abuse received as

a result of sporting ‘blavy’ as a child in

school, and the scars have never left

me!”

-Tommy Mallen, Journalist

Navy-Blue & Black: A Rag’s to Riches story Once enemy no.1 in the fashion world, navy-blue and black is having a ‘moment’ right now. The combo first started making waves during Fall of 2012, gracing the c a t w a l k s o f f a s h i o n powerhouses like Miu Miu, Carolina Herrera, Céline. Good news though, all it takes to incorporate the style is to pop on a pair of black opaque tights with a navy dress and you’re ready to go!!

YAY NAY

QUEEN ELIZABETH II: Style icon and influential political figure, the Queen is living proof that you can rule a country and do it looking fabulous. This woman knows the importance of accessorizing

MARK RUTTE: Fashion’s new political darling, the Prime Minister of the Netherlands knows the wonders that a simply tailored suit can do.

CHRISTINE LAGARDE: Lagarde epitomizes French understated elegance. Some have charged her with being ‘too elegant’, but that has not stopped Lagarde from carrying her signature Birkin bag and wrapping the infamous scarf round her neck in her new role as managing director of the IMF. This is what power and style looks like.

Power Dressing; A Lesson from Europe’s Leaders

Politics and fashion are an unlikely pair. Many dismiss fashion as a frivolous waste of time and something indicative of the consumerist times that we live in. However, these nay sayers choose to overlook the true beauty of fashion. It allows the average person to become an artist in their own right, to build a persona from clothes. Fashion has always been about more than its’ primitive origins as protection from the elements; it is a reflection of the times that we live in. Clothes allow you to manipulate how people view you. This idea of the manipulation of public perception is at the heart of politics and so it only makes sense that fashion is a key component in politics, a game based on opinion. If used wisely, fashion can be instrumental in furthering a politicians career.

At this point, many of you may think I’m talking total rubbish but bare with me! Let’s look at Angela Merkel. No fashionista by any stretch of the imagination, yet, her style choices are extremely thought out. Her uniform consists of the humble pant suit, reworked for every color in the rainbow. This is done deliberately;as a female politician and a woman of her power, she is always struggling to be respected in a male dominated sphere. Her conservative and uniform dressing screams a woman in control. Angela Merkel has ensured that her clothes never detract from her political influence but, in fact, further it.

The idea of fashion and politics working hand in hand recently became apparent. In February 2012, Obama gained an unlikely ally in his re-election campaign. Anna Wintour, the infamous editor-in-chief of American Vogue, held a fundraising event to raise funds for Runway to Win, a campaign composed of tshirts, bags and accessories, designed by prominent American designers, supporting Obama's re-election campaign. Wintour summed up the blurring of lines between fashion and politics, saying, “The runway is no longer just a runway, it’s now a force for change in politics.”

IRELAND’S POLITICAL STYLE OFFENDERS

I’m not sure I even know where to start with this look. Firstly, Mick, a shave and a blowdry may be in order. Then there’s the pastel polo shirts he seems to be so fond of. He teems these beauties with some cargo pants and builders shoes. The result: more hobo than haute-couture. Word of advice: stop trying to make the polo shirt happen! It’s not going to happen!

Now don’t get me wrong, I am as big a fan of Sesame Street as the next person. But, rocking up to a parliamentary debate in your Oscar the Grouch t-shirt simply won’t cut it. We, here at Fashion Police, do appreciate the pop of colour that Ming brings to an otherwise monochrome Dail. However, we would have preferred to see the orange injection in the form of a tie, or if he was feeling very brave, tailored suit. Ming, you’ve been warned!!

Power Dressing; a Look Across the Pond

THE FASHION OF AMERICAN POLITICS

THE KENNEDY’S: Possibly the best looking family to ever grace politics, the Kennedy’s were always impeccably turned out. JFK was the master of the crisp white tucked-in shirt with a sophisticated tie and his wife, Jackie O is a style icon in her own right. The Kennedy;s style is one for the history books.

MICHELLE O’BAMA: The First Lady of not just the USA, but now also of fashion. Michelle has a gift for mixing high end, bespoke pieces with more affordable pieces, meaning her style is accessible to the average person. Ms. O’Bama gets a gold star from us.

American politicians have quite the legacy of being sharply dressed, from Abraham Lincoln and his iconic stovepipe hat to Obama and his sharp suits.

The Style Doppelganger Dilemma

A fashion doppelganger is, of course, somebody wearing the same outfit as you (Shock horror). It is a pretty common that, with such a high concentration of fashionistas in the one place, someone may rock up to GA in the same outfit as you. Picture the scene; you’’ve been planning outfits for days. You have found the perfect balance between ‘chill but not too chill’ for team building, ‘formal but not too formal’ for committee work and ‘formal but fashionable’ for Genera; assembly and then you see from the corner of your eye an outfit that looks all too familiar.

The phenomenon of fashion doppelgangers was rife amongst delegates and officials alike. I discovered my stylistic twin yesterday afternoon. Not only did I have a style doppelganger but I had a MALE style doppelganger. A man of obvious good taste, Ciaran Schutten could be seen running around, fulfilling his organizing duties whilst donning a pair of wine chinos and a crisp white shirt. I had the same idea, strutting around in my very own wine tailored trousers and classic white shirt.

Fashion doppelgangers, outfit twins, clothes double acts, whatever you wish to call them, are NOT a fashion no no, they are the exact opposite! It is a compliment so work those matching outfits twinsies!!

DoppelgangerAccording to the ever trustworthy Urban Dictionary, fashion is a sense of style that changes from decade to decade, century to century. Each era of fashion can be very similar to the last or can take a 180 and can be drastically different. A doppelganger, as you will know if you’ve ever seen How I Met Your Mother, is someone that looks the exact same as another person, and yet is not a twin.
