Assignment 3: Advertisement for Empire or Romance Era

Selection #1: Romantic Period Garment (1835-1840)

•  This is a very structured dress from the Romantic Period. The fabric is strong and stiff, and the sleeves are less puffy.

•  This dress is made from a stiff satin, which was used a lot during the Romantic Period.

Selection #1: Modern Gown •  Take one look at this dress and

it’s hard to see the resemblance between this one and the gown that inspired it, however, this dress shares the design essence. The silhouette is the same and the lines in the top part of both gowns are the same, if you were to remove the sleeves.

•  The feminine details and the layering of the skirt are indicative of the Romantic Period.

Selection #2: Romantic Period Garment (1836)

•  This dress is very elaborate, which was often seen during the Romantic Period. The sleeves are huge, the waist is tiny, and the skirt dramatically flares out.

•  The sleeves, neckline and the pattern of the fabric are very strong examples of trends during the Romantic Period.

Selection #2: Modern Gown •  This dress, while not

exactly like the dress from the time period that inspired it, is still very dramatic. The sleeves are made of lace and bell out after the elbow, the skirt also flares out dramatically.

•  The lace and floral details are from the Romantic Period.

Selection #3: Romantic Period Garment (1838)

•  The dress has large, puffy sleeves; a tight waist, almost like that of a corset; and flares at the hips.

•  This dress’s silhouette is very indicative of the Romantic Period.

Selection #3: Modern Gown •  While this dress is not

from the Romantic Period, there are obvious similarities. This dress has elaborate sleeves, is made from satin and lace, and has a skirt that flares out.

•  This dress has a very structured waist, just like those seen in the Romantic Period.

Selection #4: Empire Period Garment (1809)

•  This dress is a classic example of an Empire Period dress. It has a square neckline, feminine details, and a high waist.

•  The woman is wearing a hairpiece that was very typical of those seen during this time period.

Selection #4: Modern Gown •  This dress is a good

interpretation because it has a high waist, a square neckline and sleeves similar to those seen during the Empire Period.

•  The dress’s details are very feminine. The flower motifs were commonly seen on dresses from this time period.

Selection #5: Empire Period Garment (c. 1800)

•  This dress encompasses the famous Empire silhouette: a high waist, loose falling skirt, and puffed sleeves.

•  For me, this dresses details are what makes it the most representative of the Empire Period. The Floral decorations, frills, and ruffles are all a part of this period.

Selection #5: Modern Gown •  This dress is a good

modern interpretation because it also has a strong empire silhouette. It too, has a high waist; loose, flowing skirt; and puffed sleeves.

•  The lace details on the sleeve are obviously from the Empire Period.
