Goats usually have between 1 and 3 babies, called kids. As soon as they are born, the mother cleans her kids and encourages them to stand up and feed.

Goat kids soon become quite independent but they still keep close to their mother, especially when they are ready to feed from her milk.

Goat kids are very playful and love to climb and jump. These are important skills for a goat - in the wild they often have to clamber to find food.

Goat kids will also play- fight and soon start to grow small horns.

When they are tired, they like to huddle together for warmth and comfort.

Goats can live in places in which no other farm animal could cope.

They can forage for food on high mountains and will clamber across steep slopes, looking for the tastiest plants. They can also manage in hot, dry climates so are often farmed in countries where there is little rain.

Goats can be kept for their milk which can also be made into a soft cheese.

In many countries, goat meat is eaten instead of lamb and goat’s milk is drunk instead of cow’s milk. The hair from some goats is very soft and is used to make cashmere jumpers and scarves.
