TH E LI G H T
From June through September, we are offer-ing an outdoor worship service on the first
Sunday of each month at the 9:45am service. The first of those opportunities willbe Sunday, June 5th. You are invited tocome in casual summer attire, bring a comfylawn chair (if you wish), have handy yourinsulated coffee mug, and enjoy the beautyof God’s creation with your friends in Christhere at FLC.
This year we are re-situating the “outdoorsanctuary” to take better advantage of our
Emmaus Grove oak trees, so just follow thenorth sidewalk around the building whereyou will be able to worship in the shade of the trees with a beautiful natural backdropof blue sky and green growth. (In case of inclement weather, we will continue theinformality by simply moving the serviceinto the large gathering area in the
EducationWing.)
And don’tforget to invitefriends andneighbors. Weare blessed withsome newmembers amongus from last
year’s outdoorservices –people whohave said it wasa great way to“try out” FLC,an opportunity to feelcomfortable coming to experience the joyand spirit of our community.
SUMMER OUTDOOR WORSHIP – June 5th at 9:45 am
Sunday, June 12th, is the DAY of PENTECOST! When it comes to the greatcelebrations of the church year, Pentecostought to rank right up there with Christmasand Easter – for just as Christmas signalsJesus being born, and just as Easter an-nounces God’s victory over sin and death,Pentecost reminds us of the gift of the HolySpirit blowing into the world and into ourlives.
The story for that day comes to us from thesecond chapter of Acts:
When the Day of Pentecost came,
they were all together in one place.
Suddenly a sound like the blowing
of a violent wind came from heaven
and filled the whole house where
they were sitting … and all of them
were filled with the Holy Spirit.
The Day of Pentecost is50 days afterEaster, andour serviceson the week-end of June11/12 willcenter on theHoly Spirit at
work among us who come together in thisplace. This special celebration has alwaybeen associated with the color red (the firof the Spirit), and you are encouraged towear something red to worship as a visualreminder of the Spirit’s presence. And julike with Christmas or Easter, make it afamily event or invite a neighbor or friendexperience the wonder of the wind of theSpirit blowing in our lives.
THE DAY OF PENTECOST: The coming of the Holy Spirit!

I think summer is finally (!) upon us. I know “official” summer
doesn’t hit until June 21, but for me Memorial Day marks its be-ginning, and now we have until Labor Day Weekend to shiftgears and enjoy the summer.
What does this summer hold in store for you? Weekends at alake cabin? Steaks on the grill? Boating on the river? A coupleof weeks off to relax and get some projects done?
Is camping your passion? Or fishing? Do you lose yourself working on the lawn or in the garden? Maybe you are an avidgolfer? Do you set aside time each day to run or walk or roller-blade or ride your bike?
Do you have a trip planned? A family reunion to attend? Endlessbaseball or soccer games with the kids? Relatives and friendscoming to visit?
Are you anxious to relax in the sun and finally read that book your friend recommended? Do you enjoy art fairs or outdoorconcerts on a warm summer night? Is there a special spot by alake or a hiking trail you keep coming back to?
Lots to do! Lots to squeeze in over the coming three months.Summer is here, and in order to make sure we enjoy every minuteof it, some things just have to give. Some of our regular activitiesduring the other nine months of the year necessarily get put on theback burner.
I’m afraid that for many of us, one of those back-burner concernsis our relationship with God. Is that the case with you? Doesyour early morning rush to the golf course or the garden get in theway of those few important minutes of reflection and prayer thatcan shape the day? Does gathering with the faith community inworship on Saturday evenings or Sunday mornings take secondplace to packing for the trip or washing the car? Does your desirefor some personal freedom and relaxation crowd out that phonecall to your relative in need or your visit to a struggling friend? Are you in any way tending to your life with Christ in the monthsof summer – or can that just wait until Labor Day weekend whenthe summer break is over?
Here is my suggestion to you for this summer: Give somethought to how this time of shifting gears for three months caninclude renewal of your soul. Let the word “recreation” remindyou of both the opportunity for summer fun and the opportunityfor summer “RE-creation.” Just as you make all your other sum-mer plans, start now and make a plan with God. Visit churches asyou travel. Gather regularly with our faith community on week-ends as part of your summer RE-creation. Set aside some dailytime for prayer, for tending to the garden of your spirit. Findsome other friends in Christ to sit under a tree by the lake each
week for a time of reflection together.
And make sure you keep a watchful eyeopen to the needs of others around you.
Yes, indeed, summer is upon us, and I, forone, am glad. There are so many greatopportunities in the days ahead, and I pray that your summer willalso include some intentional, wonderful RE-creation as youmake time to connect with God.
Blessings in Christ, Pastor Phil

From the Senior Pastor
Church Council Notes …
At the May 10 meeting of the Church Council, President
Otterness welcomed Pastor Janel Kuester. The Council
“officially” adopted Pastor Janel’s compensation package
(a required procedure by the IRS). Otterness announced
Pastor Janel’s upcoming ordination service on Saturday,
May 14, and her installation service on Sunday, May 22.
May 22 will also be the occasion of a celebration reception
for retiring office administrator Sue Swenson.
Included in Pastor Phil’s report: (1) nearly 1500 peopleworshipped on Easter morning; (2) he and Director of
Children’s Ministries Maria Tarpinian held a First Com-
munion workshop for 42 fifth graders in anticipation of
their first Communion experience on Maundy Thursday;
(3) he led funeral services for Margaret Gjerning and
Howard Miller as well as a graveside service for Edna
Hoffman during the past month.
The Finance Team report indicated that at the end of April,
year-to-date income was $18,000 less than projected, while
expense projections have been right on target. The
Finance Team will continue to closely monitor the income. On the plus side, the out-front monies received to date
from the Capital Appeal should enable us to pay off in full
the balance of the smaller of the two assessments in June
as a first step in eliminating the assessment debt and
reducing our mortgage amount.
New flags were purchased and are currently in use on the
outdoor flagpoles.
It was reported that the Garage Sale, with the help of many
volunteers, had raised $1,600, with proceeds to be divided
Summer is upon us …

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/farmington-lutheran-church-june-2011-newsltter 6/12
Dear Friends in Christ,
What a privilege it is to have been called to serve as your part-
time Pastor of Congregational Care at Farmington Lutheran. Ikeep pinching myself to make sure that I am not dreaming that Iam back at Farmington Lutheran with all of you! I am so gratefulto God and to all of you for your warm re-welcome back and yoursupport and encouragement in these my first few days of my min-istry time with you.
Since this is a newly developed position at FLC, I thought itmight be helpful to review what I was called to be a part of among and with each of you. I was called to take on the bulk of the visitation ministry (elder care visits and hospital calls) and towork closely with the Spiritual Care Ministry team. I was alsocalled to work closely with the Adult Spiritual Growth team tohelp reenergize and develop the Sunday morning opportunitiescome fall for the adult education time and other spiritual growthoptions. Next, I get to pull Pastor Phil out of the pulpit oneweekend a month (trust me, that won’t be an easy task…that manloves to preach!) and to help with worship planning andleadership. With my call being part-time, this does mean that Iwill be away one weekend a month and worshiping elsewhere.Lastly, I will remain on staff as a resource and for consistency
through the transition of a new senior pastor being called.
As some of you know, I also have a small, private consulting
business of my own that financially sup-ported my way through seminary. Duringmy interview with the call committee, Iwas honest in stating that if I were totake a part-time call, my intent wouldhave to continue my consulting businessfor financial reasons. My priority will always be the FarmingtonLutheran community in all emergency situations, but there will besome meetings and instances where you may see me missing. One of these instances will be my attendance at only one Satur-day evening service a month. This is both healthy for me to keepat my allotted hours among you and to remind us all that I amcalled as a part-time position. With this in mind, consistently myoffice hours will be Tuesday’s. Each week depending on eveningmeetings, the other days will change, but usually will be Tuesday-
Thursday.
Let me end by saying that I feel blessed to be among a fine com-munity of believers and as I continue to recognize faces and notall names, please continue to introduce yourselves and wear yourname tags for worship. I continue to look forward to learningthose names and sharing our faith stories.
In Christ’s love and service,
Pastor Janel Kuester

by Junie B.Did You Know?Farmington Lutheran Church has a place for you while you arehere but did you know we have a place for you after you'regone? No I'm not talking about heaven - I'll leave that up to thepastor. I'm talking about the Farmington Lutheran cemetery.
Here are some things I would like to share with you about ourlittle cemetery:
It is located about 3 miles southwest of Farmington on the northside of 245th street between Denmark and Cedar Avenue. The 2acres of land was donated to the church around 1920 by Mr. andMrs. Ferdinan Miller.
It has about 500 regular and cremation lots available (total). Atthe time of this printing the cremation lots (4ft x 4ft) cost $200.00and the regular lots (4ft x 8ft) cost $400.00. You do get adiscount for 2 or more. The lot fees include “perpetual care”,
which means that the upkeep of the cemetery will continueindefinitely. However, you are responsible for watering flowersand there is a 200 gallon water tank and jugs for you to use.
You do not have to be a member of Farmington Lutheran Church
to purchase a lot at thecemetery (we don'tdiscriminate!).
A Memorial RemembranceService is held each year onthe last Sunday of May atNoon (This year on May29th) which includes ashort service with a localColor Guard.
The church members that are on the cemetery board are DonHunter, Paul Houck, Diane Schmidtke and Steve Raymond. Please contact any of the board members by calling the churchoffice for more information or if you would like to make a dona
tion or contribution to ourcemetery.
We all know we have a beautiful church building, but please go
out and see our beautiful little church cemetery.
