TECHNICAL DETAILSLOCATIONThe origins of Grosseto can be traced to the High Middle Ages; the rare remains of greater antiquity found in certain points of the city are not sufficient to prove an Etruscan or Roman origin.In August of 803, San Giorgo's church and much of its property was given in enfiteusi (a perpetual lease granting property rights) to Ildebrando degli Aldobrandeschi, whose successors were to be counts of the Grosseto area until the end of the 12th century. Thus started the so-called domination of the Aldobrandeschi family, under which the city reached the height of its power. As the concept of Commune was taking form, the city vowed loyalty to Siena (1151). In 1222 the Aldobrandeschis granted the inhabitants of Grosseto the power to name a podestà or captain of the people, three councilors and other officials. This gave rise to great jubilation. Carried along by the momentum the people of Grosseto repudiated the act of obedience to Siena. However in September of 1244, the envoi of 3000 men from Siena and certain "good manners" restored loyalty and obedience. Siena thus replaced the Aldobrandeschis, leaving them their imperial privileges. Grosseto was freed again just one year later, and fighted with the Florentines in the Monteaperti battle. Occupied once more and devastated, excommunicated by Clement IV, freed again, declared a republic under the leadership of Maria Scozia Tolomei, besieged by Louis IV of Bavaria and the anti-pope Niccolò V in 1336, Grosseto eventually submitted definitively to Siena. After the treatise of Cateau Cambresis and the fall of Siena under Florence rule, the Medici set about to transform Grosseto into a fortress. The construction of the walls was started while drainage of the wetlands and a network of roads began to take form. But the Medici neglected the Grosseto territory. It was only under the Lorene, thanks to Pietro Leopoldo, that the province of Grosseto was finaly separated from Siena, given podesteria and set on new political and economical bases. Later though, politics divided the people and the Grand Duke; Grosseto took part actively in the Risorgimento; Leopold II left Florence. Following the Independance, Grosseto became one of so many other italian cities in search of an identity.
