Farm Camp Started in 2008 With Just a Few Children

How Did it Start? Reviewed models of and operating procedures for farm camps at other farms throughout the country. Started with ½ day programs with snacks provided, but no lunches. There were both morning and afternoon sessions each lasting for 3 hours.

Farm Camp Administration Registration forms patterned after others and then customized to fit our needs. Medical release forms that include allergy information. Proper insurance put in place to cover all of the farm camp activities. Party and Event Manager in charge of Farm Camp. Interaction with parents, especially moms, to insure that they are comfortable with leaving their children.

Fishing in the Farm Pond is always one of the most popular activities.

Access to animals is a very important component of the camp activities.

Planting and harvesting crops in their own dedicated garden.

Kids love being around tractors, Gators, and getting hay wagon rides.

Fun Activities and Arts and Crafts to Break up the Day

Each New Year Has Brought New Changes• ½ day classes for ages 4 through 7 expanded from 3 hours to 5 hours so that lunch could be included plus one snack period.• No more split session days…just one session per day.• Full day classes for ages  8 though 10 including lunch and two snack periods.• Two weeks offered for each age group alternated as opposed to back to back as originally offered.• A session was offered for children aged 11 through 13 two years in a row but never drew enough participants to run.

Nothing is Simple Once the Government Gets Involved The law regulating camps contains over 10 pages of rules and procedures that must be conformed with in order to be certified. A “Camp Director” was required that would meet several mandated qualifications.   Barbara Alstede with her teaching degree and prior children’s group involvement met the qualifications.  Once you are a certified camp you can train and create your own “Camp Directors.” All counselors need to have background checks for both crime and for being sexual predators. All staff members needed to be formally trained in advanced first aid and CPR.

And Still More Requirements…. A policy handbook was created and addresses both mandatory items as well as everything else. A medical treatment center was designated as was a camp “Medical Officer.” Medical records had to be bound and kept in the treatment area. Certificate of Occupancies were needed for all buildings that would be utilized for camp…even very old ones that have been around for more than a ½ century. Inspections were conducted by the Board of Health and the state both prior to camp starting as well as during the camp season.

Farm Camp Helps Cement our Total Customer Experience Many of the families sending children are already CSA members and Annual Pass holders. It helps create greater customer loyalty. It helps create tomorrow’s customers.  Kids who have fun today will bring their kids 20 years from now. It fosters a better understanding of Agriculture and helps create non‐farm cheer leaders for our industry.

Crock Pot not Microwave It has taken time for farm camp to become a profitable enterprise. Certification was a lot of extra work and much of the competition is not certified and is technically operating illegally. We are glad to have the certification as it sets us apart from our competition, provides us with greater liability protection, and forced us to move our camp operations to a whole new level of professionalism. Taking care of children is a grand responsibility and must be taken very seriously.  This is an enterprise that must always be respected and requires that you be at the top of your game every day.

Don’t do it unless you are fully committed to make it work!
