The Pastor’s Desk

Dear Saint Mary’s Family,

My beloved sisters and brothers:

It is a great honor for me to send my first message as your new servant/pastor. I have been entrusted with the great responsibility of leading you as we continue to build the Kingdom of God here at Saint Mary’s. I beg Almighty God to show us His ways!

For more than a century, since the foundation of our home by the Franciscan Friars in 1906, Saint Mary’s has been known as a place of welcoming, fraternity and discipleship. People well know how busy we are here taking care of God’s children.

As we continue our mission as Franciscan disciples, I appeal to your generosity to reach our goal for our Annual Fund. So far this year, 489 people have made a gift toward our goal of $250,000. To date, we have raised $170,368. This annual fund is vital to the operation of the parish and it helps accomplish so many things that we might not otherwise be able to do. If you’ve never made a gift to the Annual Fund, or if it’s been a while since your last gift, please consider a gift of $25 or more this year. If you have already given this year, thank you for your generosity! Click here to make your gift today:http://registration.stmarys-pompton.com/donation/If you do not have access to a computer, please call the Parish Office at 973.835.0374 and we’ll be happy to forward you additional information

Thanks to your generous sharing of God’s blessings, we can support our ministries. For instance, giving to the Annual Fund enables us to launch new ministries that respond to the needs of our parish, such as the Good Works Gang, Saint Mary’s new adult, team-based outreach. This ministry not only touches the lives of those served but also has an impact on those serving. In the words of Bill Shafer, a volunteer from our first team project where over 91 boxes were packed for a parishioner’s relocation move: “It was truly my honor to work with an amazing group! My perspective of the experience is our discipleship in action to serve our community. To see the pure joy in the recipient’s eyes and hear her say, ‘No one ever helped me like this before and even though I will not remember your names, I will never forget all of you.’” That is God’s will in action. We all became the hands and voice of our Savior Jesus Christ!

EMHC Training Session

Thursday, September 28, 7:00 PM in church.

Are you a confirmed Catholic? Have you been considering becoming a Eucharistic Minister of Holy Communion?Fr. Richard will train new ministers for this very special ministry. Already an EMHC? Join us again for a refresher course or if you have questions. Please call or email Gisela Moore at 973.835.5841, x119 - [email protected]

This weekend, as I begin serving as your new pastor, I want to ask for your prayers, joy and commitment as we continue to build the Kingdom of God.

At Saint Mary’s we are extremely blessed with a great variety of people, gifts, needs and passions. We encounter our Lord daily as we rejoice, suffer and journey with each person that the Lord sends our way. As a community of faith, we have done much for each other. However, we can never take for granted our mission as disciples. Each day is a new opportunity to be the hands and feet of Jesus Christ here on earth in this little corner of the world we call Pompton Lakes.

Every day there are sisters and brothers who come to us looking for food, shelter and other needs that require the assistance of a social worker. We do our best, with ministries like the Food Pantry, Pathways, Stephen Ministries and the direct outreach of the friars. Unfortunately, in some cases, this help is not enough. We are looking for volunteer social workers who wish to donate a few hours of their time to serve our parish in this ministry.

Dear Saint Mary’s Social Worker: Our Lord has given you special gifts; please share them with those in need! Please contact me or Anne Silversey with your answer.

Thanks be to God for your compassionate hearts!

Your brother and servant in Christ in the spirit of Francis of Assisi, Padre Gonzalo

FaithDirect

As you are probably aware, church attendance during the summer months tends to drop off as vacations and

weekend sporting events often conflict. On the other hand, the services we provide within the parish and for the larger community continue year round, as do their associated expenses. Thus, your consistent financial support of our parish is vital to achieving our stewardship mission.

The easiest way to be sure that your gift of treasure reaches us, even when you can’t be here, is through enrollment in our electronic offertory program: Faith Direct. If you have not yet enrolled, please consider doing so this month.

Enrollment forms are available in the church office or you can visit Faith Direct’s secure website www.faithdirect.net to enroll online. Our parish code is NJ23

20 DE AGOSTO DE 2017—VEINTEAVO DOMINGO ORDINARIOAt that time, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman of that district came and called out, “Have pity on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is tormented by a demon.” But Jesus did not say a word in answer to her. Jesus’ disciples came and asked him, “Send her away, for she keeps calling out after us.” He said in reply, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” But the woman came and did Jesus homage, saying, “Lord, help me.” He said in reply, “It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs.” She said, “Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters.” Then Jesus said to her in reply, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” And the woman’s daughter was healed from that hour. Mateo 15:21-28
