Farewell Ms Hemmings It is with sadness, and gratitude, that we say “goodbye” to Ms Hemmings. Ms Hemmings came to us ‘temporarily’ ten years ago following a period of great turmoil in the school and thankfully never left, until now. Through this time she has steered the school quietly and deftly to the successful position it now holds, and has given everybody, staff and pupils, the space and time to develop individually and collectively. Clay sun gods by Jess T and Sam B

We had a lump of clay and you had to flatten the clay and make it into a

round flat shape. Next we made the sun’s rays - we curved them around. Then we made the sun’s face. All of the sun’s faces were different. We painted them sitting outside in the

sunshine.

Frightful by Ben Twite

Sam, the character from ‘My Side of the Mountain’ has seen a falcon and really wants one. So he tried to get one from the other side of the Catskills mountains. When he was climbing down he found a falcon’s nest. He managed to get a baby falcon but the mother attacked him. Sam jumped from rock to rock like a rabbit and managed to get down with the bird and is now training it. He called the baby falcon Frightful. Year 3 have been doing about if taking Frightful was right or wrong. We gave ideas and wrote them in our books.

‘Gold Book’ celebrations In this space we celebrate children who have recently been entered into the ‘Gold Book’ for all sorts of reasons, but particularly

for good, kind, helpful, thoughtful and caring behaviour. We think all of our children behave well but sometimes the acts of indivduals require special recognition. We are pleased to say that some children appear in the ‘Gold Book’ more than once.

The new teachers by Sienna and George The new teachers are coming after September to teach us because Mrs Hall is leaving and Mrs Gordon has left. We are really excited but we are sad because Mrs Hall is leaving. The new teachers are called Mr Jones and Mrs McGahey. We are looking forward to having two new teachers to come and teach us. When they visited the class got halved and Mrs McGahey read us a story while Mr Jones did some literacy, but it was just an interview. We are also delighted that Miss Evans will be joining the staff as teacher in Year 2. We wish all the new staff lots of luck in their new posts.

Rounders by Jonny and Jacob On Monday 26th June we had a Rounders tournament at Diss High School. We had Garboldisham 1, 2, 3 and 4 teams. We had 9 matches each. Debbie’s team won and that was Jonny, Daniel W, Esther, Oli, Oakley, Zach, Lauren, Ashya, Charley, Dylan and Robin. We had a great time and met some friends from other schools.

Garboldisham School bids farewell to Jo and Dave Hall

As they continue with their plans to head to Australia we would like to say ‘farewell’ to Dave and Jo Hall. Over 20 years ago Garboldisham was Dave’s first school when he came as ‘Schools’ Liaison’ from Diss Rugby Club. We have enjoyed incredible success in area rugby under his coaching and his inclusive and ‘can-do’ approach has benefitted around 500 children here - he will be widely missed. It was a great day for us when Mrs Hall also came to work at Garboldisham. She has worked in the carousel with children from Years 2-6 and kindly stepped in when Mrs Gordon went on maternity leave. The children have loved her investigations and projects. We would all like to wish Jo, Dave, Ben and Mollie all the best for the future. Suzanne Halliwell

New reception children visits On 13th and 20th June some new faces showed up in Mrs Howard’s classroom. They were adorable, they were cute, they were the new reception children. On 20th June the new reception children came in to play with the toys. They all really enjoyed the climbing frame on the field. They were looked after by Lauren, Oakley and Jasmine. On 13th they also came in and played with the inside toys like the princess’ castle and they were looked after by Jasmine, Leigh-Ann and Logan Farmer. We hope to see you in September Jackson, Ella-may, Oliver Paul, Connor, Rufus, Ella Jane, Winston, Oliver Thomas, Corey, Iris, Rhys, Maisie, Denni, Alfie and Erin By Libby and Lauren .

THEME PARK MATHS In maths, year 5 and 6’s have been designing their own theme parks. Everybody started with £600,000 and had to spend it all on rides, toilets, cafes, paths, car parks and shops. We had a competition in class to see who could make the funniest toilet names. A few of the names included: Poopy Palace and Lootopia. The costs of some of the rides include the following: large rides £50,000; small rides £24,000; café £11,000; shops £6,000; toilets £2,000 and paths £150 per square. People got to decide what shapes they wanted their rides to be and what colour they wanted too. We all had fun making these theme parks and it is very good help with maths. By Ashya and Charley

Mr Woodhouse Calculator Maths On Thursday 8th June Mr Woodhouse from Diss High School came into Beech Tree class to give Year 6 a scientific calculator lesson. In it we learned how to turn numbers into letters by just turning the calculator upside down. We also did some crosswords. Again we used the upside down trick. We found the answer that it was simply an equation and the answer you got was the answer to something up or down. You probably know how it works. He also taught us some pretty advanced stuff such as the shift button is a little thing that can do a lot. By George S and Logan F

TRI GOLF by Mrs Howard A few weeks ago, some pupils from Years 1 and 2 and

Years 3 and 4 were given the opportunity take part in a tri golf tournament at

Barnham Broom golf and country club. We all had a lovely morning with the sun shining brightly.

Many of the children had never played golf before but everyone had a good

attempt at the different skills. Some children proved to be naturals, with Garboldisham receiving several highly commended in the different categories.

Many thanks to the parents that accompanied us on the trip.

Sand art by Eryn and Beatrice Rowan Tree Class have done some sand art with Lorraine. On sandpaper we used crayons to draw pictures of Egyptian pyramids and the sky. We had a practise and then we did the final picture. The sand paper was very rough and hard to colour on. By Ryan and Jaidan - In art we learnt about pyramids. We drew on sandpaper a backround with a sun and other pyramids. They looked like the pyramids of Giza where Pharaoh Khufu was buried.

FROGS CLEAN-UP DAY On Saturday we had a FROGS clean-up day but everyone was welcome not just FROGS. There were quite a few people and we got a lot of jobs done: field fence painted, boat taken down, playground swept, bike shed cleaned, trees cut back, planters painted, new planter made, courtyard cleaned, playground fence re-painted, blackboards painted and much more. At around 11:00 Mrs Halliwell made us all tea, coffee and squash and Mrs Feakes made us bacon rolls. It was meant to be 9:00 until 3:00 but some people stayed until 4:00. Some people came and then went home for a bit and then came back again but also some people stayed the whole time. Thank you to everyone who came and helped make our school look amazing. By Abbie Pliler

Maths challenge day at Diss High school by Daniel W and Oakley On Wednesday 14th June five children (Oakley, Daniel W, Logan S, George S and Lauren) went to Diss High School for a gifted and talented maths day. First we did some small brain teaser maths challenges which were quite challenging! Afterwards we were split up into groups. Oakley and Daniel were with two people from Roydon and had to make a cube out of different shapes and no gaps allowed. Next we went outside to do a trees and the tangent ratio (finding out the height, girth and age of a tree). We measured angles from certain distances to the top of the tree with a clinometer. Next we had lunch followed by a game of footie against Roydon which we won 7-4. Lastly we did some creative maths (art on a maths day!). We cut out parts of squares or hexagons and stuck them on the opposite end to see what it looked like then drew it on a piece of paper and created a piece of artwork.

My Side of the Mountain In Year 4 we have been reading ‘My side of the Mountain’ and it’s about a sophisticated boy named Sam Gribley who ran away from home to find his great grandfather Gribley’s land and live there. He lived in New York with his 4 brothers, 4 sisters and his parents and ran away to the Catskill Mountains to survive on his own with only an axe, lighter, tinder, and a knife. Then he built his home inside a hemlock tree and also trained a bird that he named Frightful to for hunt food. By Jamie and Harry Hopkins

SPONSORED BOUNCE by Chloe and Theo On Friday 9th June we did something called the sponsored bounce and here’s what we did. We jumped and jumped and jumped to raise money for FROGS. We had a big bouncy castle in the amphitheatre just in front of the decking. Reception to Year 6 all had a go at having one minute to jump as much as they could. We reckon that we would all like to do it again because it was so much FUN!

Outdoor Ed by Scarlett and Fraser

We went to the forest and we did art in the style of Andy Goldsworthy. We got to use things we found in the forest to make our art sculptures .

We used sticks, leaves, feathers and pine cones to make our sculptures. They looked like swirls in a picture. We had lots of fun doing this. We left our sculptures in the forest and Pennie took photos of us all working so we could show everyone at school .

Year 2 visit to Gressenhall On Wednesday Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 went to Gressenhall. First we got separated in to two groups, then the first group went to the farm and the second group went to the workhouse. At the farm you had to find little bird houses with stamps but one of the bird houses had a chicken in the way. Next at the farm we went on a tractor ride to see the whole farm. After that we went to the loo, then we went to get our lunch and eat it. Then we swapped groups so we went to the workhouse. (Annie and Megan) When you walked into the workhouse the dads and boys would have to walk in one side and the mums and girls would walk in the other side. (Calypso) In the dungeon there was a wooden bed and it was very cold. The toilet was a wooden bucket. People who had been very naughty and had played card games were sent to the dungeon. It was very dark. (Laila and Ruby)

At Gressenhall we saw three horses, a dungeon and we also saw lots of stuff in the old times but the biggest thing was the combine harvester! (Gabriel) We saw pigs, ponies and sheep. We sat in the trailer and the tractor pulled us around the farm to where the pigs were. We went to the dunnnggggeeeooonnn!! (Isaac and Olivia) At Gressenhall I saw two pigs, they were black. Also there were two horses. They were brown. I love them so much. I got my stamp of a horse because we had to collect different stamps as we went around the whole place. We milked the cow. We used the udders. (Mason) At the farm the children milked a fake cow and looked at the animals. Some locations they went to there were stamps to put on their hands. When they got back to school they got postcards from Gressenhall’s shop and we got info leaflets as well .(Noel)

Low ropes and tunnels At Horstead one of the activities was the low ropes and tunnels. The low ropes were like the ones you would find in a play park, but with more challenging obstacles. We were put in 3 times to do the low ropes in the tunnels. It was wet and muddy. Logan F completed the pipe and he feels happy, scared and jolly and it was so so, so cool. BY ELLIOT’ WYNN and HAMISH TEARE

CANOEING On 24th to 26th May we went to the Horstead Centre for our residential stay and one of our activities was canoeing on the River Bure. At the start of the lesson we were taught how to canoe. We also learnt the basic strokes which were backwards and forwards strokes. We all got put into pairs - Destiny and Logan S, Gracie and George S, Lucia and Chris S, Freya and Oliver and Dylan and Noah. We had loads of fun and we got splashed, our instructor splashed us loads and loads when we got out we were soaking so that when we got out we dripped! By Gracie & Destiny

Dormitories at Horstead From 24th to 26th May Year 5 and 6 went to Horstead and overnight we stayed in dormitories. Because there weren’t many girls, all the girls stayed in one big dorm, but the boys were separated into different smaller dorms. All the beds were bunk beds to save room. At night we were all very noisy because in the dorms it was incredibly hot so it was hard to get to sleep! At night we had midnight feasts (even though it wasn’t midnight). The dorms were beautiful and had a great view from the windows so we could see the entrance. It was REALLY fun staying with all our friends in the dorms! By Leigh Ann and Esther

Crate stacking On 24th, 25th and 26th May, we went to Horstead.

We did lots of epic activities including crate stacking. We had to work as a team to get as high as we could without knocking over or falling off the tower. We

had a harness though. The highest tower was 13 crates high with Harry W and Rosalia. It is fun when

you are hanging in the air while waiting to get down. By Harry White and Noah Carpenter

Talent show and climbing wall/zip wire at Horstead centre On the 24th, 25th, 26th of May Year 5 and 6 went on their residential after the SATs. One of the activities was the zip wire and climbing wall. The zip wire was quite fast but it was really fun! The climbing wall was also fun and some of us overcame the fear of heights. In the talent show there were lots of acts. Logan F did funny impressions, the year six girls did dancing, Gracie and Lucia did the cup song, Rosalia taught us some Polish, the year six boys danced to 24 Karat Magic and the ASDF movie and Esther, Destiny and Lucia were the commentators and the teachers were the judges and there were many more acts. By George. L and Rosalia

HORSTEAD RESIDENTIAL TRIP REPORT

Archery At Horstead, one of the activities was archery. We had to wear a wrist protector for protection

from the arrows. The first thing we did in archery was practising how to shoot an arrow with a bow and then we did a team competition. Some names were:

wildcats, twin targets, arrows, coral districted and loads more. The third activity was you had a

whiteboard and you had to hit the colour on the target which it said on the board. It was really

funny and the game decided what you had to do at dinner and you won cutlery for which colour

you hit. By Robin Selby & Daniel Salt

Editors of the school newsletter are Logan Sayer, Libby Worby, Daniel Worby and Robin Selby

Mrs Gordon going on maternity leave By Sam R and Jess O

Mrs Gordon left to have a baby. She is going to have a baby girl. She left about three weeks ago. We miss her so much. In assembly we gave her a lot of presents and flowers.

Update: Isobel Patricia Gordon was born on 12th July – all doing well! Photo on next page.

Church Sketching by Ashton and Freddie On Wednesday we went in to the churchyard and sketched pictures of the church and gravestones. We were in the churchyard for one hour. It was peaceful. ART - RIVERS by Lydia and Alice In art we have been doing uninteresting rivers and exciting rivers. Uninteresting rivers are rivers that are straight with not many animals or plants in it. The exciting river has lots of animals and bright plants. Rosemary told us that part of the Little Ouse was changed into an exciting river by adding mud from the bank into the river and making it meander and wiggly. Lots more animals like otters and water voles and different birds and insects now visit the river.

Football Club On Tuesdays Year 4,5 and 6 do after school football with Kim from 3-4pm. We do drills like 2 laps around the field, passing and after that we do a match. We have 2 captains and they pick the teams and give the positions to each player. Each week we have different captains and once everyone’s been captain we start again. If you bring your ball we play with it. You have to have shin pads or long socks. At the end we do another lap around the pitch. Those of us who like football can be ‘inspired’. By Corin and Brayden

BUDDHA On Thursday afternoon Year 4 do RE and at the minute we are learning about Buddha. There is one in the school. We wrote a story about a prince that had everything he could want. He wasn’t happy and he just wanted to help other people. He left home and travelled around India as a monk. Buddhas are lucky and peaceful. They can be made of gold. They can help you to calm down when you are angry or stressed. We had a go at mindfulness, a type of meditation. By Ashtyn and Aidan Church Fete

We’d like to say a HUGE ‘thank you’ to the following children and their families for coming to the Church Fete on Saturday 24th June. The children sang beautifully and we were all very proud of them. (Ps. They DID get an ice lolly as a reward!) Ruby & India Webb, Phoebe Johnson, Alice & Sam Rickatson, Sienna & Rhiannon Smith, Nathaniel Bartrum, Noah Sanders, Reece Banks, Freya Charge, Calypso Raven, Erin Bailey, Annie Worby, Scarlett Ramm, Hamish & Beatrice Teare, Phoebe & Megan Rosher, Fraser & Olivia Canham, Jasmine Kibble, Noel & Belle Clay, Devan Plilar and Jessica Olbison. By Beatrice and Sienna …. At the Church Fete the school choir sang ‘Life is a wonderful thing’, ‘It’s a long way to Tipperary’, the seed song and a couple more. When we had finished we got an ice cream or ice lolly and there were games outside like a coconut shy, fish a ball, splat the rat, bean bag ladder throw, human fruit machine and a raffle. There was also a cake stall. It was lots of fun.

Sewing in DT In DT we are making a space scene by sewing planets and stars,

also spaceships on a background. Sewing is very unique to learn and a very good skill to learn because it is very easy when you know how to do it. The materials we used are felt, buttons, thread and we also used wadding to stuff some of the shapes

to make them stand out. By Haiden and William

Athletics On 20th June, Years 3 and 4 went on a trip to Diss High School to play athletics. Some of the things we did were running a relay race, hurdles, 100 metre race, triple jump, long jump, discus, javelin and speed jump. In the long jump we had to take a very big jump to see how far we got. The ones we liked were the speed jump and the 100 metre

race (the 100 metre race was very tiring). We all did very well at all the sports. Thank you Debbie for taking us! By Freya Button & Shannon

Science by Logan And Kacey

Science with magnets was great fun. South pole goes to north pole. We went outside and discovered that some materials are attractive. Some metals are not attractive and some are attractive.

Welcome to baby Isobel Patricia Gordon

Beach party On Friday 14th July Reception Year 1 and 2

children enjoyed a Beach Party and invited the new reception children to come along and join in

the fun.

Concert by Old Buckenham Jazz Band Last Friday the whole school were entertained by the Jazz

Band from Old Buckenham High School. As you can see our children were encouraged to have a go and join in and

everyone was up dancing at the end. Thank you once again to the Band for coming along.

FROGS SUMMER FAIR Saturday 8th July saw the sun shining for the annual school summer fair. A huge thank you to everyone who came along to join in the fun, help set up or organise in any way. A grand total of over £1300 was raised. Well done everyone and thank you FROGS!

Ukulele Years 3, 4 and 5 recently

gave a short performance to show off their skills on the

ukulele. Led by their teacher Peter Arnold and

competently accompanied by Freya Button and

Alice Rickatson on violin, the children demonstrated their

skills enthusiastically. Peter has decided to retire

from teaching in schools but we would like to thank him very much for providing our

children with such a fun start to learning music.

YEAR 6 GRADUATION CEREMONY On Monday 17th July we were proud to see our Year 6 children at

their graduation ceremony at St John’s Church. Thank you to Dr Hunt from Diss High School for presenting the gifts

and Revd Derrick Sheppard for leading the service.

Guitar open rehearsal James Ready and his guitar students played their favourite pieces to parents and future guitar players in an open rehearsal recently. Guitar lessons are always popular and the standard is going up all the time. Well done to you all.

Sports Day The rain went away and the

sun shone to super sports day afternoon.

Piano and violin Ms Levy and her violin and piano students showed off their talents to parents, staff and children. What a fantastic range of playing – duets on violin and piano, ensembles and individual pieces, stars all of them. Well done. Ms Levy has room for a few new pupils next term.

Music Lessons If you are interested in music lessons for your child, please

see Mrs Halliwell at the beginning of the new term.
