Grain BlendsBy now, winter doldrums may have set in and you’re ready for new meal ideas. So here is the solution for you: Six new Wegmans blends of various grains that could be an alternative to rice. Or pair them with some veggies and they could be your new meat!

Three of the six varieties are featured in recipes in our Winter Menu magazine. I loved the Red Quinoa-Avocado Salad. Quinoa (Keen-wah) is an heirloom grain, staple of the Inca culture of Peru; in this recipe it’s combined with corn, cilantro, onions, tomatoes, and avocados, then tossed with Lemon Vinaigrette dressing. Yum! Red Quinoa is also in the Golden Jewel Blend along with round pearly grains of Israeli couscous, orzo pasta, and baby garbanzo beans. In the magazine, this blend is tossed with Mediterranean goodies such as roasted red tomato strips, Kalamata olives, feta cheese, mint, oregano and fresh spinach.

All six blends are from Indian Harvest, a Minnesota company that got its start harvesting wild rice in 1978. Then they began to blend all sorts of heirloom grains, rice, and special added ingredients. Other products in this line are: Sunrise Blend with quinoa flakes, wheat bulgur, buckwheat, red rice, and brown flax seed. (Follow the directions on pg 45 in Menu to make an overnight yogurt/fruit breakfast bowl for a healthy morning start.) The Jasmine Rice Blend has baby garbanzo beans and Daikon Radish seeds. There’s a Whole Grain 5 Rice Blend, and finally, a Kansas Medley Rice Blend. They take 15-25 minutes to cook up. Four of the six have significant servings of whole grains (to help you get 3 servings a day); the number of whole grain servings is noted on the package front.

The beautiful, colorful packages are an interesting shape. You’ll find them in the grocery aisle that shelves rice, in Nature’s Marketplace departments, and on the end of some aisles.
