    Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro was born on February 5,1985, in Madeira, Portugal. The island of Madeira was also theplace where Cristiano first learned to master his skills as a soccerplayer. He was then spotted by former Liverpool manager, GerardHoullier at the age of sixteen but Liverpool had no intentions tosign him at that time because they thought he was too young and

    he needed more time to develop his skills. However, in thesummer of 2003, when Sporting played against ManchesterUnited and defeated them, Cristiano caught the attention ofManchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson. He plays now inReal Madrid.

    Jos Mrio dos Santos Flix Mourinho was born on 26th January1963. He is a Portuguese football coach and the current coach ofReal Madrid. He has the nickname "The Special One", a self-proclaimed title which was later taken up by the British media.

    Mourinho is widely regarded among experts, players andcoaches, as one of the greatest coaches in football history.

    Eusbio da Silva Ferreira was born 25 January 1942, commonly known simply asEusbio, is a retired Mozambican-born Portuguese football forward. He is consideredone of the best footballers of all-time by the IFFHS, experts and fans. He helped thePortuguese national team reach third place at the 1966 World Cup, being the topgoalscorer of the tournament with nine goals (six of which were scored at GoodisonPark), becoming the first player to receive the honour after it was officially

    established, and elected the Bronze Ball player. He won the European Footballer ofthe Year award in 1965 and was runner-up in 1962 and 1966. He played for Benficafor 15 years out of his 22 years as a footballer, thus being manly associated with thePortuguese club, and is the team's all-time top scorer. There, he won the EuropeanCup once and managed to help them reach three additional finals. He was thecompetition's top scorer on three occasions, in 1965, 1966 and 1968. He also wonthe Bota de Prata (First Liga top scorer award) seven times (a national record), in1964, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968, 1970 and 1973, an unmatched feat. He was the first

    ever player to win the European Golden Boot award, in 1968, a feat he laterreplicated in 1973.

    Lus Filipe Madeira Caeiro Figo, is a Portuguese former international footballer. Heplayed as a midfielder for Sporting CP, FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, andInternazionale, during a career which spanned over a period of 20 years. He retiredfrom football on 31 May 2009. He won 127 caps for the Portuguese national footballteam, a number that makes him the most capped Portuguese player in history.

    Figo was the 2000 European Footballer of the Year, the 2001 FIFA World Player of theYear, and was named amongst the FIFA 100.

    Egas Moniz was born in Avanca, Portugal, on November 29, 1874.He received his early education from his uncle, before joining theFaculty of Medicine at Coimbra University. He received furthereducation at Bordeaux and Paris and became Professor at

    Coimbra in 1902. Moniz entered politics in 1903 and served as aDeputy in the Portugese Parliament until 1917 when he becamePortuguese Ambassador to Spain. Later in 1917 he was appointedMinister for Foreign Affairs and he was President of thePortuguese Delegation at the Paris Peace Conference in 1918. Hewon a Nobel Prize for his scientific work.

    He was a Portuguese diplomat. He ignored and defied the orders of his owngovernment for the safety of war refugees fleeing from invading German militaryforces in the early years of World War II. Between June 16 and June 23, 1940, hefrantically issued Portuguese visas free of charge, to over 30,000 refugees seekingto escape the Nazi terror, 12,000 of whom were Jewish. In fact, he saved moreJewish people during World War II than Oskar Schindler.

    Carlos Viegas Gago Coutinho, generally known simply asGago Coutinho, was a Portuguese aviation pioneer who,together with Sacadura Cabral, was the first to cross theSouth Atlantic Ocean by air, from March to June 1922

    Vasco da Gama, 1st Count of Vidigueira, was a Portuguese explorer, oneof the most successful in the Age of Discovery and the commander of thefirst ships to sail directly from Europe to India. For a short time in 1524 hewas the Governor of Portuguese India, under the title of Viceroy.

    Vasco da Gama was born in either 1460 or 1469 in Sines, on the

    southwest coast of Portugal, probably in a house near the church of NossaSenhora das Salas.

    Jos de Sousa Saramago, was a Nobel-laureate Portuguesenovelist, poet, playwright and journalist. His works, some ofwhich can be seen as allegories, commonly present subversiveperspectives on historic events, emphasizing the human factor.

    Harold Bloom has described Saramago as "a permanent part ofthe Western canon". Saramago was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1998.

    More than two million copies of his books have been sold insideof Portugal alone and his work has been translated into 25languages.
