FAMOUS PLACES IN THE UK

Location

• United Kingdom occupies the greater part of the British Isles over 5000 (although only 140 are inhabited). The largest islands are Great Britain, Ireland, Shetlands, Hebrides, Orkney and Anglesey. The largest island - Great Britain - is separated from Europe by the Strait Tunnel and Dover Strait.

Portsmouth

• Oxford is a famous university city. The rivers Thames and Cherwell run through Oxford and meet south of the city centre.. In the early Middle Ages it was the settlement of the Saxons. The University of Oxford is the oldest one in the English-speaking world.

Big Ben

• Big Ben is a symbol of London and probably is one of the first things you will see during your visit in this city. The tower clock is a part of the Houses of Parliament. The strike of the famous clock is broadcast all over the world by the BBC. It was erected, after the fire of the Houses of Parliament in 1834. Big Ben was named after Sir Benjamin Hall who was its constructor during the building of the new Houses of Parliament. Big Ben is an extremely huge clock. What is more, it is very precise. Twice a day the clock is checked by some officials from the Greenwich Observatory if it is correct.

London Eye

• London Eye is situated in front of The Houses of Parliament, between Waterloo and Westminster Bridge. London Eye is one of London's many projects aimed at celebrating the end of the twentieth century - the Millennium. The idea to build the world's largest observation wheel was created in 1994, and the authors of the project are: David Marks and Julia Barfield. The whole event cost 34 million pounds!

Museum Madame Tussauds in London

• Museum Madame Toussauds is undoubtedly one of the most famous museums in the world. The first of them (Tussauds museums are now in several major cities around the world) was founded in London in the nineteenth century and continues to be one of the biggest attractions of the United Kingdom’s capital.

Stonehenge

• Stonehenge, a group of megaliths, embankments and ditches, located 15 km from the modern city of Salisbury, is the work of the people who represent an unknown culture. Some others stone buildings are scattered along the western coast of Europe (including Carnac in Brittany).
