Charles Babbage1791 - 1871Babbage is often regarded asthe “Father of Computing”.He created the first Difference Engine, the first programmable computer in history and even drew up plans for the firstprinter. Babbage died before any of his designs could be completed.
Ada Lovelace1815 - 1852Lovelace is credited with the title “the first programmer”. She worked with CharlesBabbage’s Analytical Engine to develop what is recognised as the first algorithm intended to be processed by a machine. She was the daughter of poet Lord Byron.
George Boole1815 - 1864Boole invented the prototype of what is now called Boolean logic, which is the basis of the modern digital computer. Boole is often regarded in hindsight as a founder of the field of computer science. Boolean logic is based around the principle of AND, ORand NOT.
Tommy Flowers1905 - 1998Flowers created the worlds first electronic programmable computer - Colossus.Colossus was used by British codebreaker in WW2 todecipher German codemessages. His work was not acknowledged until the 1970s.
Grace Hopper1906 - 1992Hopper was a computerscientist and US Navy Admiral. She was the first to use the term “debugging” for fixing computer problems. Hopper developed the first working compiler and developed COBOL, a programminglanguage still used today.
Alan Turing1912 - 1954Turing is most famous forhelping break the German Enigma Code during WW2. He created the Bombe, a machine to decipher the Enigma code. He came up with the Turing Test, a method to test artificial intelligence.
Edgar F. Codd1923 - 2003Codd invented the relational database while workingfor IBM.
He revolutionised the way in which data was storedand retrieved.
Douglas Englebart1925 - 2013Englebart is credited withinventing the first computer mouse, a wooden box with two metal wheels in it. He and his team also created bit-mapped screens, hypertext and some precursors to the graphical user interface (GUI).
Philip Don Estridge1937 - 1985Estridge led the developmentof the IBM PC, arguably themost important computer inthe history of computers.It’s the creation of this thatled to the types of computerswe have today. It was arevolutionary design using off-the-shelf parts and allowed for open architecture.
Steve Wozniak1950 - PresentWozniak is best known as the co-founder of Apple. Wozniak single-handedly invented both the Apple I and Apple IIcomputers in the 1970s which contributed significantly to the microcomputer revolution.
Bill Gates1955 - PresentGates is best known forfounding Microsoft. Microsoftcreated Windows - the mostsuccessful operating systemever, and used by the majorityof people the world over. he isnow one of the richest men inthe world with a net worth ofover $91 Billion.
Steve Jobs1955 - 2011Jobs is best known as the co-founder, chairman andCEO of Apple. Under Job’sguidance, the companypioneered a series ofrevolutionary technologiesincluding the Mac, iPhoneand iPad. Jobs was also the co-founder of Pixar.
Guido Van Rossum1956 - PresentVan Rossum is best known as the author of the Pythonlanguage. He has also worked for Google and Dropbox.
Tim Berners-Lee1955 - PresentBerners-Lee is an engineer and computer scientist, best known as the inventor of the World Wide Web. He made aproposal for an information management system in March 1989 and implemented the first successful communicationbetween a HTTP client and server via the internet in mid-November the same year.
Margaret Hamilton1936 - PresentHamilton is an Americancomputer scientist, systems engineer, and business owner. She was Director of theSoftware Engineering Division of the MIT Instrumentation Laboratory, which developed on-board flight software forthe Apollo space program.
David A. Huffman1925 - 1999Huffman was a pioneer incomputer science, knownfor his Huffman coding.
He was also one of thepioneers in the field ofmathematical origami.
Linus Torvalds1969 - PresentTorvalds is a Finnish-American software engineer who is the creator, and for a long time, principal developer of the Linux kernel, which became the kernel for operatingsystems such as the Linuxoperating system, Android, and Chrome OS.
Sergey Brin1973 - PresentBrin is a Russian-bornAmerican computer scientist and internet entrepreneur.Together with Larry Page, heco-founded Google.
