Transcript of Family Matters - Oriana House Newsletter 2Q 2018.pdf · 2018-03-28 · Family Matters. Quarterly...
In Akron, every Tuesday and Thursday evening from 4:30-6:00pm, we welcome all families, friends and support persons of those with an addiction to join together for education and support. These sessions will provide education for the supports, matching the treatment skills being learned by clients in their programs.
Topics discussed include, but are not limited to, Triggers and Cravings, Rebuilding Trust, and Families in Recovery. Loved ones will have the opportunity during these sessions to learn addi-
tional information about the dis-ease of addiction and targeted in-terventions to respond to some of the problematic behaviors that may arise from active addiction and in early recovery.
Clients—we ask that you please work closely with your Primary Counselor regarding your Family Matters Program participation. It is very important that you share this
information with your loved ones / support per-son(s) so they may start benefitting from the program as early as possible and know which sessions to attend.
We are committed to providing an informative and positive environment to educate and provide support for you and your loved one’s recovery!
Oriana House, Inc., encourages feedback after each session so we can best assist the healing and learning process.

Quarterly Newsletter
April - June 2018
Bring in this beautiful spring season by getting involved in our Family Matters program! Benefits of participating in this resource is to not only sup-port your loved one with an addiction, but also gain education about addition and learn the skills that are taught in Oriana House, Inc., treatment programming!
This program intends to bridge the gap in com-munication and understanding to increase posi-tive and healthy support.
Client’s have provided feedback as to what they have found most helpful in the pro-gram such as -
“Getting my support involved in this process so she knows my coun-selors and other group members, so she knows we’re not alone!”
Family Matters uses evidenced based interventions to target and address unique family issues. It is an opportunity to discuss with other support people and family members who have been through similar and relatable situa-tions in their experience with addiction. It is im-portant to remember you are not alone!
In all areas, Family Matters is facilitated by counselors who are trained to address addiction and family concerns revolving around addiction. All counselors are skilled in the application of evidence based counseling techniques and are a valuable resource as you progress with your loved one in their recovery.

What is detoxification, or “detox”? Detoxification refers to the process of removing toxins from the body. More specifically in regards to substance use, detox refers to a span of time where any drugs or alcohol are metabolized in
the body. There are three stages of detox: Evaluation, Stabilization, and Further Treatment. Evaluation address the presence of substances as well as mental health and medi-cal concerns or needs to determine the best approach. Stabilization is the process in which the individual goes through detoxification and withdrawal, with medical/psychological ser-vices if needed based on the evaluation pro-cess. Finally, after the substances have metab-olized in the body, further treatment increases the chance of sustained recovery following detox.
How long does withdrawal last? Withdrawal are the various symptoms individuals experience during the detoxifica-tion process. There are two stages of withdrawal: Acute and Post-Acute Withdrawal. The length of the withdrawal process varies by substance. Acute withdrawal for opi-ates, for example, can last approximately anywhere from a week to a few months with symptoms peaking around 72 hours after last use. Symptoms include—nausea/vomiting, cramping, depression, diarrhea, fever, and other severe symptoms. Acute withdrawal for stimulants can last approximately anywhere from a week to 10 weeks, symptoms peaking within a few days. Symptoms include— increased anxiety, dulled senses, slow movement, paranoia, irritability, and fatigue as well as other severe symptoms.
Post-acute withdrawal occurs following the symptoms of acute withdrawal following the detoxification process. Symptoms include but are not limited to - depression and/or anxiety, difficulty concentrating, emotional overreactions or numbness, insomnia, and cravings for substances. It is suggested post-acute withdrawal is a stress response in combination with changes that are occurring in the brain due to abstinence from substances. These changes are occurring because the brain experienced changes in brain chemistry over time due to frequent and long term substance use.
How can Acute and Post-Acute Withdrawal be treated? Evidence based on research shows that treatment in the early recovery process is vital in achieving long-term abstinence, due to the brain undergoing a healing process following substance use. In the acute withdrawal process medical management or residential rehabilitation may be necessary based on need and the substance the individual is withdrawing from. Following residential/inpatient treatment, if needed, it is important to follow up with treatment to continue the process of learning new tools and managing high risk situations or relapse triggers.
