Day OneWELCOME TO NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION.....................................University Hall Theater

Meet the Welcome Team, your best resource for what to know at State, and learn about important elements of New Student Orientation. As you begin your day at Indiana State, we will also discuss the #Sycamore6 and what it means to be a Sycamore.

DOLLARS AND $ENSE......................................................................University Hall Theater

Understanding your bill is only a part of what it means to pay for college and become financially literate. Students will be responsible for their bill and managing their own finances including paying for textbooks, travel to and from campus, and even their meals. This session will provide you and your student with information on how to prepare for managing all your finances while in college.

Enjoy the remaining refreshments or purchase a snack from Jazzman’s Café. If you’re living on-campus in the fall, return to the theater after the break. If you’re commuting to and from campus, go to University Hall, Room 101. Staff will help direct you. Please no food or drink in University Hall Theater.

The Office of Residential Life will discuss the exciting opportunities they have planned for your student and the support they have available should they become homesick or have a roommate issue.

Commuting to Campus..................................................................University Hall, Room 101Students who live close enough to campus to commute will learn about resources provided specifically for them including laptop rentals, lounge and study space, and various events.

Several important offices will be represented on the Panel of Campus Experts including professional staff members from the Office of Information Technology, Financial Aid, Bursar, Career Center, Student Counseling Center, Public Safety, and Academic Affairs.

You have the opportunity to use different resources while on campus. Use this time to visit the Resource Fair and attend workshops. If your student is a part of STATE Works or a 21st Century Scholar, they are required to attend those workshops.

WORKSHOPS: PART ONE

This time is used for departments to meet with specific groups of students or to talk about specific programs.

21st Century Scholars: What You Need to Know..........................................HMSU, Room 321

Students who are participating in the Twenty-First Century Scholars program must attend this workshop. Resources for scholars will be discussed, as well as logistical information to make sure students are receiving all the benefits of the 21st Century Scholars program. Students who are 21st Century Scholars would have enrolled in the program during 7th or 8th grade.

There are several benefits to participating in the Honors College including the opportunity to take intellectually stimulating courses that will encourage your student to think, share their perspectives, and participate in hands-on learning projects out in the field.

R U Ready? Your Career Starts Today!.........................................................HMSU, Room 407Studies show that students who work part-time while taking classes improve academic success. In this session you will learn how students can apply for jobs on campus and the benefits of student employment. Your student will also learn about the importance of internships and how their experiences inside and out of the classroom work for their future career. STATE Works students are required to attend this session.

This session will discuss the various ways that Student Affairs can assist in making your student’s college experience their own while introducing different resources. Scholarship Workshop (Part One only on May 31 and June 1)..........................Welcome Center Theater

The Scholarship Workshop is your opportunity to learn all about how merit scholarships work. We will cover how they pay, maintaining your award, rules and regulations, and everything in between.

Charles E. Brown African American Cultural Center: A Home Away from Home....HMSU, Room 416

Since 1972, the African American Cultural Center has been an important part of Indiana State University. The Charles E. Brown African American Cultural Center is responsible for developing and providing opportunities for African-American students to involve themselves in creating, innovating, designating, and deciding cultural programs at ISU.

On May 31st and June 1st, Honors College students go to HMSU, Dede I; all other students will meet in Science, Room 138.

It is no surprise academics in college are incredibly different than high school. Even if your student is coming back to college after being away from school for awhile, this session will be helpful in understanding the expectations of instructors and faculty at Indiana State and what it takes to be successful in earning a degree.

ONE TREE, MANY BRANCHES................................................................................Campus

The Welcome Team will escort students and families to the One Tree, Many Branches sessions. Listen carefully as these sessions are divided by academic major. If your student is undecided or has not declared a major, they are encouraged to attend Exploratory Studies or the session that involves their major of interest, unless they are listed as University College. University College majors are required to attend their session. Representatives from each college will discuss academic performance expectations, career readiness pathways, and more during these sessions. You should attend this session with your student.

Academic Presentations will take place in the same breakout rooms as One Tree, Many Branches (see room locations above). This session will provide information on how your student can prepare for their academic advising appointment on Day Two.

After the academic presentations, there is some free time until the Student Dinner at 5:30pm. If students are staying on campus, they should use this time to return to their vehicle and drive to Erickson Hall (see page 18). If they checked their luggage with us, it will be at Erickson Hall to pick up. All students are required to attend dinner and evening sessions. They should meet their Welcome Team Student Leader in the lobby of Erickson Hall by 5:15pm. Attendance will be taken.

They want to share with you their highs and lows since they have started their college career, as well as how their families supported them. They want to give you their perspective so bring your questions!

DEAN OF STUDENTS: ADVOCATING FOR SUCCESS........................................HMSU, Dede IFamilies and guests will hear from the Dean of Students’ Team on how they help students advocate for themselves as well as address behavior and resolve issues.

EMPOWERING YOUR STUDENT FOR SUCCESS..............................................HMSU, Dede IStudents and families go through a transition period in the initial phases of attending college. This session will help support systems, like families, learn how best to encourage their student, when to step in, and when to challenge your student. The academic calendar will be used to demonstrate important times to check-in with your student on certain topics, such as mid-term grades, adding/dropping classes, registering for classes, and financial aid.

LETTERS FROM HOME.................................................................................HMSU, Dede IFamilies and guests will have an opportunity to write a letter to their student. These surprise letters will be delivered to them at midterms. Shh, keep it a secret!

THE NEXT STEP...........................................................................................HMSU, Dede IAs we close the first phases of the transition to Indiana State University, we will spend the final moments discussing the investment of college and how earning a degree is hard work but well worth the effort. We will not see most of you until August, so this time will be spent discussing next steps in preparing students for Fall Welcome and move-in weekend. Reminders about residence halls and luggage will be mentioned.
